BLACK ARTS COLLECTIVE (BLAC)


You are invited to the Black Arts Collective meeting, held on the first
Tuesday of every month, to develop discourse in the arts and to provide
a platform for networking for black cultural workers : artists, heritage
workers and academics around issues of arts and culture. For more info

The guest speaker is historian Ciraj Rassool, who will be talking on
History, heritage and discourses of the new nation in South Africa. The
profiled artist is Stanley Hermans, painter and TOTT columnist. See
their biographies below.


Speakers Biographies

Stanley Hermans is a professional painter, columnist for Cape Times/Top
of the Times and general freelance writer who has his MA Fine art from
Michaelis UCT. In the last 8 years of professional experience, Stanley
has exhibited widely and has completed and working on mural commissions.
Stanley is a Capetonian who graduated from Harold Cressy High.

Ciraj Rasool is also a Capetonian. After gaining a law degree at UCT
and serving briefly as an articled clerk, Ciraj graduated in History at
Northwestern University (US). He taught at Khanya College, a Sached
project concerned with broadening access to university study for black
students. Presently at the History Department, UWC teaching a course to
undergraduate students : 'Africa, race and empire'; dealing with images
of Africa, especially visual representations in museums and
international exhibitions. At graduate level, he is involved at various
levels of Public History and Heritage - he co-ordinates a committee on
the new Postgraduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies offered in
partnership by UWC, UCT and the Robben Island Museum and teaches a
course on Public History and Tourism.. Ciraj has researched and
published widely around issues of heritage, public culture, visual
history, and the 'production of history'. He has looked at different
genres of photography, at the Van Riebeeck Festival, the Empire
Exhibition, Cultural Tourism and the history of museums. He is presently
completing both a co-authored manuscript (South Africa and the Spectacle
of Public History) and a doctorate (Biography and South African
History). He serves on the District Six Museum Trust as executive member
and Trust secretary. In addition, he does work with the McGregor Museum
(Kimberley), South African National Parks and the National Monuments
Council. During 1998, he was visiting professor in Southern African
History at Yale University.
