Hi,
Here's an update on the festival: "The Full Monty"
"Kibbutz" for South Africa.

Dear Friends,
I am part of a team that is working to organize an art-fest.
The SHAEI Institute is initiating the building of a self-sufficient
permacultural community called Manzil. Manzil means "The place where the

travelers descends" in Arabic and hopes to be a peaceful home to artists

and pilgrims, both of place and spirit.
It is based on the principles of co-operation, community, cohabitation
and co-investment, ecologically sound lifestyle, permaculture. In
essence a South African Green Kibbutz.
The Kibbutz is a viable solution for creating employment, long term
investment, security against crime and supportive common endeavor. In
Israel, the Kibbutz system is almost single-handedly responsible for
turning a wasteland into an oasis.
Crime, unemployment and poverty are a national : everyone of us is
either vulnerable to them or responsible for alleviating them - Kibbutz
makes this a communal effort through mutually beneficial relationships.
The initial stage of the project is highly experimental. Although many
such communities already exist, contributing to a cleaner planet and
healthier lives, the establishment of such a place is always a unique
and rewarding experience for those involved.

To celebrate and promote the "kibbutz" we are having an Art-Fest on the
29th August 1998.
The tradition of Festival:
The Festival is a communal celebration, a dancing, displaying drama of
crafts, arts, food, wine and personality. A derivation of the
powwow--from the Algonquian "he dreams."
In times of crisis or on other important occasions, festivals are held
to unite minds and spirits for the common good.

The Music and Arts Festival has stimulated positive interaction and
communication. People calling in from everywhere with renewed vigor and
zest are bringing out the best of themselves as gifts to each other. The

organizers are all falling in love! We still have room for more on board

- it's not too late. Flea-market stall holders, artists, buskers please

contact Nicci for further details.

We have invited flea-market stall holders to set up on the land,
anywhere, along rugged footpaths or under trees. Enclosed shelters are
available to the food-stall holders. Artists are invited to exhibit in
the gardens or on the base and backdrop of the stage. Bands will be
performing from lunch till late, and the cover charge is R40.00
If you would like to participate in any way, please volunteer. If you
would like to help build the stage, help set up stall space, or have any

ideas and requests please let us know immediately. If you would like to
exhibit or set up a stall or even display a product or promotional
material, again, please let us know immediately.
FREE
There is no charge for first time flea-market stall holders, display of
promotional material or exhibition. Seize this open opportunity. Once
this fest is a success we would like to host on a regular basis and at a

larger venue.

To all those already involved, tremendous thanks for supporting local
enterprise and mutual understanding.
To those who have just received this facsimile, please support this
effort to improve our environment by giving this report your time and
attention. It is only through promoting a common cause that it can be
achieved and the person who is best able to ensure that success is you.

For further information, please contact Nicci or Michelle at (011)
708-3832 or Fax (011) 465-1175 or e-mail: n...@stones.com. Use the
e-mail, fax or answering facilities to leave a message if we are
unavailable, we eagerly wait to hear from you - Nicci.

CONCERT:
The concert serves to introduce new and upcoming bands and to support
established South African professionals, who will also be performing
some new work.
The bands play for an hour each and take half hour breaks during which
we have a middle-eastern dance narrative, recitals and announcements.
LINE UP:
Balance and Rev Green:
Members:
Adam Thomas: Like the actor who wanted to "direct", Adam is the classic
bass guitarist who wanted to "do drums". And I am still waiting for him
to supply fresh info for this page.
Nahddia Jacobsen: Vocalist extraordinaire. Like Stevie Nicks smoking
honey. Awesome.
Dean Smith: The obligatory guitar twanger. Closet pedal steel player. No

relation to James Dean or the hotelier "Mr Smith", but thanks for
asking.
Nic Nicoloau: Six-stringed horizontal vibroplane operator. (A bouzouki
converted into an eclectic guitar.)
Nicci Jacobsen: Bass player / bass fisherman.. er.. fisherperson.. er..
fisherperchild. Looks more like Dirk Mrozek every day, but what can one
do?
Shevaughn Thomas: Vocals in the Thomas mould. This is something like a
jelly mould, only less wobbly.
Mr "B" : Bubba is the Balance fanclub Chairman, and chief sponsor. He is

also the treasurer, being constituted entirely of the savings of the
band.

Crimson:
It all started out in May 1997 with Erin and Mike playing a few songs in

Erin's room. Justin would play along with them but in his own room,
until he was eventually asked to join them. Later on Roland joined them
and Crimson was formed in about June '97. In November '97 they had their

first gig at Bugsy's. They have played there several times since and
have played at The Roxy Rhythm Bar as well.
The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Bush and even a bit of R.E.M
influences their music.
Crimson is made up of 4 guys. Namely: Erin and Justin Peacock, Mike
Groenewald and Roland Schilling.
Roland Schilling: Bass Guitarist, one year experience with instrument.
Justin PeacocK: Drummer, 2 years experience with instrument.

Highway Jam:
Main event - 3.pm to 5.pm, HIGHWAY JAM
Mike Meiring - Vocals & Lead Guitar
Kai - Bass & Double Bass
Dave Noris - Drums
Dave Gordon - Percussion
Ekkie Eckhardt - Saxophone
Mike Meiring, one of the hottest lead guitarists in the country, moved
to Johannesburg from Durban approximately six years ago and formed the
band Highway Jam. The band soon started incorporating originals into
their line-up and after releasing a CD and successfully gigging together

for four years, the drummer and bassist left the band due to other
commitments. Mike decided it was time to explore new music styles and
brought together an exceptionally talented drummer, a percussionist as
well as two respected session musicians: Kai on bass and Ekkie on sax.
Kai currently plays with little sister and will be featured on their
next CD. He also played with Lionel Bastos in the band "Be like
water."
Ekkie has been blowing the sax almost as long as he can remember and has

played with, among others, Vinnie and the Viscounts. Although Ekkie does

not play every gig with the band, he will be featured at the concert as
well as on the new CD.
Music Style: The music is a blend of Afro-Cuban and Jazz Funk Grunge.
This music is currently the hottest news in Europe.
Future Plans:
Highway Jam have just completed recording a CD which is set to introduce

a style which is unique to the band. The CD is due for release very
shortly, so save your energies and your pennies. This concept is going
to be something South Africa has not experienced to date.
Where to find them:
Highway Jam can currently be seen at The Bohemian in Richmond on Friday
nights and Mike Meiring is doing a solo at Bugsy Malone in Fountainbleau

on Thursday nights.

BILLBOARDS OF OPPORTUNITY.
Apart from the self evident promotional status of the event as a
showcase of talent products and services we will be erecting a
billboard:
A listing of work opportunities is available to musicians from Manzil,
for example:
Belgian University radio seeks music from south African Bands (from mike

Gills website: Powerzone.)
Rock Concerts For Beginners:
Young musicians and recently formed bands need experience in live
performance. Unfortunately, they're often unable to get gigs without any

experience. Johannesburg guitar teacher, John Gerritsen, hopes to break
this cycle by hosting regular rock concerts at small-holdings in
Honeydew, Midrand and Elandsdrift. Bands must supply their own
equipment, but a PA system will be available. Concert programmes will be

spit into rock, folk, classical and heavy metal. Interested artists are
invited to submit audition tapes. Telephone John for further details at
(011) 782-0585.
If you have anything to bulletin, please call or simply do so by
attending the concert and posting your message on the board.
Magazine:
Each participant has been invited to submit a profile of their views,
aims and experience for publication in the currently small magazine
specifically about the event.
Advertisers Billboard: We will be displaying a billboard for all those
who have been contacted and have shown interest but whom for various
reasons cannot attend. Their pamphlets and contact details will be
displayed on a billboard at the Beer Tent.
Artists and Musicians billboard:
A billboard of related or affiliated events: Diana
Diana is a teacher from Pretoria who has many years experience in
invigorating people and stimulating creativity and spirituality. At the
end of September (dates will be finalized, please inquire at the
festival.) Diana hosts a festival at Kaya Elangeni: The Spring Sun
celebration:
Since early times, says Diana, festivities to celebrate the autumn and
spring equinoxes have been held in Northern hemisphere countries. Linked

to the cycles of planting and Harvesting, they have always been symbolic

of an affinity with nature.
Kaya Elangeni means "our home in the sun."
Her program incorporates a display of Vedic cooking, organically grown
herbal teas and aromatic oils, workshops in kinesiology (body energy
system balance) , foot massage, mono-chord therapy based on the
mathematical relationships implicit in harmonic resonance, belly
dancing, tai chi, guardian angels, crystal therapy, candle-making,
mobile construction and astronomy.
"Here out in the open, surrounded by the powerful energy of the
Magaliesburg mountains, we are able to concentrate our thoughts on the
well-being of our environment." This is being expressed by beginning the

building of a sacred stone spiral together, a kind of African monolith,
in the spirit of Stonehenge, which may take years to complete. The
spiral is an exercise in tradition, spirituality, union and wholeness.
Performers from the concert have been invited to her festival next month

and will be doing a two band folk show for the participants and anyone
else who would like to camp out on the land for the weekend.
Like our festival, this event hopes to bring together people of various
and common interests, to stimulate interaction and cooperative and
harmonious ventures. For further details please call Diana at: (012)
333-0978 or see her at the festival where she will be presenting a
psychic art exhibition.

enterprises may be posted on this board.
