"Lifeforms", 3 March - 3 April 1999

Exhibition by Karen Jay and Craig Foster

Exhibition opens Wednesday, 3 March 1999 at 17h30

After their success at Bang the Gallery in 1998 with "THE POWER
OF TWO" these two exciting artists return with an exciting development
and new work to form the new exhibition: "LIFE FORMS".

Like before, both these artists strongly use earth, it's shapes, colours
and textures to produce a body of work that refers back to ancient
styles, yet it is profoundly modern in spirit and essence. The energy
and vigour of Africa is combined with a subtlety of decorative elements
and expressive mediums and in the end both artists succeed to produce
extraordinary art for modern times. This exhibition also sees a focus in
colour, subjects and textures that provide the viewer with a sense of
harmony to earth and it's extraordinary gifts.

Karen Jay works in a variety of mediums including ceramics, collage and
acrylic on canvas and jewellery. Her works are visual and decorative
tributes to nature's forms, shapes and textures and focus a lot on
pattern and colour. These elements also provide a strong base for her
strong message of storytelling, nostalgia and visual puns. This
combination is an exciting visual and intellectual expression of
awareness and the spirit of nature.

Craig Foster's photographs and traditional rock engravings are haunting
reminders of our disregard and loss of respect for earth. His message is
presented in a series of photographs capturing his GEO ART projects in
the North West Cape and Kalahari. Foster also uses traditional rock
engraving to produce modern pieces of raw African art. As an
accomplished still and movie photographer, he captures the most
beautiful shapes, shadows and textures of his projects and grasps the
elements and forces of earth at work. A spiritually charged drive gives
these works an energy and visual presence.

The combination of these two artists produces an exciting exhibition of
artwork and supplies the viewer with an energy and awareness of his
connection to earth and Africa in this time.

"My Shadow, my echo, me", 7 April to 8 May 1999

Solo exhibition by Shany van den Berg

Opens on Wednesday 7 April 1999 at 17H30

The ethereal, sensitive oils of Shany van den Berg captures a beauty and
technique that often refers back to romanticism, but is emotionally
charged with very modern concepts, ideas and philosophies. They
communicate to the modern, but still captures and embraces the past. This
contrast of layered contemporary ideas and exquisite techniques makes
for a very exciting and beautiful exhibition of work.

Multi-layered emotions, wisdom and intrigue are portrayed with the
meticulous attention to detail. The surface of her paintings become one
with the subject and often shows very few direct and obvious brush
strokes. The deep colours and paint move into each other on soft dark
planes and highlights surfaces to reveal the portrait's state of mind.
An intensity of commitment to each subject makes it real yet enigmatic.
After studying ceramics in 1986 and life drawing at Ruth Prowse School
of Art in 1992 and 1994, Van den Berg's drive and enthusiasm for art has
produced extraordinary work. Since 1989 she has worked full time and the
process of discovery and perfecting her technique has matured into the
exciting work she produces today.

Her work has been part of group shows at various galleries including GI
Designs; Reswick Gallery; Hout Street Gallery (Paarl); Millennium Art
Gallery (Pretoria) and BANG The Gallery (Cape Town). She has also
exhibited her work in Germany as part of ARTS HAMBURG and recently
private collectors from London, Luxembourg and the Cayman Islands has
added her work to their collections.

Bang the Gallery is proud to present Van den Berg's first solo
exhibition in April 1999.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ARTIST WITH A SENSITIVE MODERN TOUCH AND BEAUTIFULL
PAINTINGS.
