MTN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE:
19th - 24th July 1999
During his period as artist-in-residence at MTN, Keith Dietrich will be
working on a body of watercolour paintings at MTN Head Office, 3 Alice
Lane, Sandton in the West wing. Dietrich works largely with objects, the
human body and photographs, which he meticulously renders in watercolour
on fragments of torn paper. For the duration of the week, at MTN,
Dietrich aims to re-create his studio environment, including completed
works of art. During the week the following workshops and activities
will be offered:
1 CLUES, MEMORIES AND NARRATIVES: INTERPRETATIONS OF ART WORKS
This workshop is built around the premise that there is no single and
fixed interpretation of any given work of art. Instead there exist
fragments of knowledge and understanding which we collect, edit and
imbue with meaning on the basis of individual perception and experience.
We perceive and make sense of works of art through forging associations,
connections, relationships and patterns, and these mostly operate within
the framework of myth and narrative.
This workshop aims to provide the participants with the basic tools to
access works of art, and will take the form of an interactive process
comprising games and discussions. For this workshop, each participant is
required to bring along a pen or pencil and some writing paper.
Duration of workshop: 150 minutes
Target group: Teachers and interested MTN personnel
Date: Saturday the 24th July, 10:00 - 12:30
Venue: MTN Head Office, 3 Alice Lane, Sandton, the West Wing
Parking at DIONS across the road.
2 LOOKING AT WATERCOLOURS
Although watercolour is one of the most widely used painting mediums
among illustrators and amateur artists across the world, it is also one
of the most neglected painting mediums in mainstream and academic art
circles. As the medium is easily linked to illustration and amateurism,
and consequently associated with the sweet and sentimental, it is viewed
by many artists with the greatest degree of suspicion.
This workshop aims to explore a number of theoretical and technical
issues concerning the medium of watercolour, and will take the form of
an interactive session comprising a theoretical introduction based on
the artist's own work and practical demonstrations.
Duration of workshop: 120 min.
Target group: Teachers and interested MTN personnel.
Date: Wednesday the 21st July from 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Venue: MTN Head Office, 3 Alice Lane, Sandton
Parking at DIONS across the road
3 WALKABOUTS
Daily informal walkabouts will be conducted by the artist where he will
talk about his current work, and more specifically where he will relate
formal and technical issues concerning his work to content issues.
Duration of walkabout: 60 min.
Target group: Schools.
Time: Mon - morning, Tues - afternoon, Wed - morning, Thursday -
afternoon, Friday - morning. Times are dependent upon when the schools
can come.
(If mornings prove to be difficult, with the pupils being in school, we
can change it to the afternoon, but we can only have them either in the
morning or the afternoon on each specific day.)
4 OPEN STUDIO
As the artist-in-residence programme is designed for the public to
explore the methods, ideas and processes involved in making art, you are
invited to engage with the artist at work.
Visiting hours: Daily between 1:00pm and 2:00pm
Please book for these events with HELEN COLAM on Tel: 301 8124, Fax: 301
