As part of the South African Music Day celebrations the Midi Trust, in
association with the National Arts Council, will implement the final
stages
of it’s nationwide recording project. This will take place during the
week
of 21 to 27 March 1999.
The project aims to stimulate the music industry as well as create
opportunities for young unsigned bands; by providing them with the
chance to
record their original material. It is hoped that this recording
opportunity
will furnish young musicians with the necessary musical material needed
to
promote themselves to the various players in the music industry.
An extensive selection process was launched during February and March,
and
twenty six bands were chosen from over two hundred entries. The
selection
process concentrated on the areas of originality, live performance and
recording experience. Bands from all musical genres were selected and
next
week they make their maiden voyages into the depths of recordings
studios
across the country!
The studios involved with the project have all volunteered a day’s free
recording time for what is an extremely worthwhile venture. To this
end,
all the studios were involved in the final selection, and the different
venues will be working with bands that suit their particular tastes in
music.
The Midi Trust and all the organisers realise that one studio day is not
enough to record a full-blown CD, but we hope that this opportunity will
provide the bands with professional demos with which to approach radio
stations, record and promotional companies.
On completion of the recording project, the demos will also be packaged
as a
cohesive compilation which will be distributed to various record
companies,
radio stations and the media. We believe there is an untapped market of
fresh new music in our country, and sincerely hope that the South
African
Music Day Recording Project will offer you a taste of it.
The twentysix bands who will go into studio to record are as follows:
Bruce - Soul, Zatgee - Gospel, Peu - African, CNP Band - Gospel
African,
Baca-Man & Friends - jazz, PPJ Ragga - Reggae, Shelflife - Rock, New
Kids
- Kwaito, Steel - Blues, Liela Groenwald - Folk Acoustic, Three
Quartet -
