It's the winter season right now.
This is a forest on the mountains outside of the human village.
In the slowly accumulating snow, the bottom of a tree trunk has some
unnatural formations that were made by small piles of rocks and
sticks.

"Eajjjjjyyyy...."
"rub rub... munch munch..."
"happiness~~"

If there's anybody listening closely, they can for sure hear something
like human speech coming out from those little weird formations. If
you also look around a bit, many of the tree trunks around here also
have many similar formations.

In one of these formations, there's a small space hidden by the sticks
and little rocks. In there lived two yukkuris, the chieftain of the
clan Marisa and Reimu. For the winter that usually symbolizes death,
these two yukkuris seemed very happy.

"Marisa and Reimu's little one... get born easy~"
"Yu~ Little one is taking it very easy"

shake shake.

"Yuuun~ Little one is answering~"

After sealing up the front door completely, this couple will soon give
birth to new lives a few days after their winter started.

This is a yukkuri clan's habitat. The rocks and sticks that are
covering the entrance of the yukkuris' caves and tree-trunk holes are
"boundaries" (border). The yukkuris will eat the leftover rations
from Fall in eager anticipation of the coming of spring.

"Why is mister munch-munch goneeee!!!!!"
"Yuuuuu, mommy, so hungry...."
"It can't be helped... little ones get eaten by Deibu easy!"
"YUUGIIIIIII!!! WHY IS MOMMY DOING THISSSS!!??!"
"Wanted... to... take it.... easy... more..."

For the most part, the winter is a very cruel season for yukkuris, and
it comes as no surprise that some will lose their lives. If they
cannot secure enough food, hungry yukkuris will end up eating their
own families. If this is still not enough, then they will be unable
to maintain their body temperature and starve or freeze to death. If
the nest is not sturdy enough, then it will be crushed by the weight
of the snow, and the yukkuris will be squashed under the weight of the
snow and dirt. If the nest is solid enough but the cover is not well
made, then wisps of cold air will still invade the house, and the
yukkuris will freeze to death.

In order to prevent this sort of tragedy from happening, the best
yukkuri will be made into chieftain and make a council that will
enforce several ordinances in order to reduce this sort of fatality to
the lowest possible number. DOS Marisa will dig out a spacious cave
in the solid rocks in the hills or mountains, and make a big enough
space so that all the yukkuris can make it through the winter
together. The experienced yukkuris will work together to fortify
their communal homes, and if there's not enough food then they will
take the vegetables from the selfish humans, etc.

The most important part that all yukkuris must be aware of is to
"never refresh before winter and have little ones".

"Refreshed~!!!"
"Yuuuun~~ Reimu gave birth to lots of cute cute little ones! Marisa
go fetch sweet-sweets for Reimu and her little ones!"
"What is Reimu sayingggg!?!? Mister snow is falling outside!!!"
"So what! Shut up and hurry up with mister munch-munch!!"
...
"So coooolddd!! Eajjjy!!! Eajjjyyyyy!!!!"
"Reimu is going to munch-muunch~!! Munch~ Munch~!! So good!! This
shit's so good!!!"

... 3 days later

"Why is mister munch-munch all gone.... then Reimu is going to munch-
munch little ones..."

and this sort of thing just keeps on happening.

If they refreshed towards the end of fall, not only because of
pregnancy, but in order to take care of the newborn little ones, one
of the parents will be unable to go out to forage for food. The
amount of food being exhausted will exceed their original plans, and
if there's not enough food then the end result is the whole family
dies. So in this sort of unforgiving conditions, "little ones +
winter = death" is a very popular concept.

But, not just this chieftain Marisa and Reimu, most of the families in
this clan have pregnant or newborn little ones. Even if they're
young, they will not ignore the terror of winter that is engraved into
their bean paste. So why are these families having little ones when
they are just starting their winter?

To find the answer, lets take a look at Chieftan Marisa and what went
on when she was born during Spring...

--------------------------

The season is now Spring.
For most of the wild yukkuris, the Spring is a joyful season that came
right after the unbearably long Winter of death.
The warm sun, the fresh and numerous grass and mister bugs.
Because they don't need to worry about food anymore, the adult
yukkuris immediately started refreshing to their heart's content.
Because they will be preparing for the new little lives, their mood is
that much brighter.

"Marisa and Reimu's little one... get born easy."
"Yu~ Little one is taking it very easy"
...

"Just like that..."
"... Just like that."

shake shake.... snap!
plop!

"D...D....Dage id eajy!!!"
""Take it easy~!""

Marisa is also one of the blessed little yukkuris that were born in
this wave of little ones. But a few days after being born, little
Marisa, who can see outside from her own home, couldn't pick up her
spirits even with the warm spring sun.

Why? Because this is a rocky barren land that has only rocks and a
little bit of grass.

"Reimu, Marisa is home..."
"Welcome back Marisa..."
"Yuuu~ Mister munch-munch is here! Everybody take it easy and share
the munch-munch..."
"Yuuuuyaaaay!!! Going to munch-munch~!!!" x 10.

But the food that was placed on top of the flat rock that they used as
a table, are only some hard weeds and some dried bug corpses.

"Munch-munch.... not very tasty..."
"Daddy.... want to munch-munch more..."
"Sorry.... yu.... there's no more mister munch-munch around the
house...."
"WHY WOULD YOU SAY THATTTT!!?!"

Even though they are whining incessantly, the little yukkuris know
this is a futile struggle, and eventually they ended this not very
satisfying meal time. After being able to bounce around energetically
three days after they were born, little Marisa finally realized what
her daddy Marisa said was true. Because as soon as she stepped out of
the door, before her there are only sand, rocks, and a barren land
that seemed almost devoid of the joy of life.

"Little ones... lets sleep easy for today..."
"Yuuuuu, understood easy..."x6
"Then.... Marisa... is going to make mister bed..."

But it's different from the forest yukkuris, Marisa couldn't make a
bed out of the fallen leaves or soft grasses. If they have that sort
of stuff then it'd have become tonight's dinner already.

"Yu...Little ones.... sleep easy..."
"It's so rough... can't take it easy!!!" x6
"Yu... Sorry... endure it easy...."

What the "bed" is made out of is just smaller rocks and some coarse
sand, spread thickly across the rocks that made up their home. Little
Marisa snuggled the bottom half of her body into the sand, and rubbed
together with her other sisters and fell asleep. It's a little bit
better than her parents, who were sleeping just on the rocks, but it's
a ways away from happiness.

Marisa's house is a small hole that was coincidentally made by a few
big rocks that were piled together by chance, made into a hospitable
place with a little bit of digging by the yukkuris. In terms of
shelter from the rain and wind, it's actually not too bad. But for
little Marisa, this is still a place where she can't take it easy.
The feeling is like a fake home where she can't take it easy.

"Marisa can't take it easy here. Marisa will go to an easy place when
she's older!"

This is Marisa's wish ever since she was small.

And then, when Marisa grew to the size of a tennis ball in between her
sisters dying from malnutrition and starvation...

Father Marisa says she has something important to tell the little
ones, and then brought Marisa and her sisters to a nearby cliff.

"Yuuuuuu~!!! Marisa can see mister forest!!"
"What an easy place!!!"
"It feels like flying~!!"
"Yu... little ones. Take a look at the other side of the forest."
"Yu...? Yuyu!!!"

This cliff has an excellent vantage point of the neighboring forest.
Looking down from this beautiful vista is the only entertainment for
little Marisa and her sisters. When they grow up, they will go to
that easy place they always looked at.

This is their dream.

From that wide span of forest, there's a giant piece of land that is
essentially bare, a flat plain mottled with different shapes.

"Over there... is where mister human lives."
"Yuuuuuuuooooooo.... it looks like such an easy place." x 3

Yukkuris are very sensitive to stuff that can let them take it easy.
In the wide flat span that is barely speckled with humans, Marisa felt
like it's a very easy place. The little stream gliding through the
village is surrounded by verdant green farm fields. Where mister
humans came and went... that's probably where mister human lives.

But while the little yukkuris were taking it easy... only father
Marisa expressed a different emotion. Just looking at the village,
father Marisa was sweating profusely, foaming at the mouth with bean
paste bubbles, and grinding her teeth so hard that it was on the verge
of shattering.

"Yu....yuugii...YUUUUUU!???!"
"Daddy!?!?"
"YUGGIIIIIIII!!!! Mister humans can't take it easyyyyyyy!!!"
"!?" x 3

And soon after, sweating profusely, father Marisa's face flushed, then
turned a sickly green, then finally pale. Then she started screaming.

"YUGIIIIII!!! BIG SIIISSS!! NOOOOO!!! MOMMYYYY!!!!!!!"
"YUUUUUU!!!?!?? DADDY!?!!? Dage id eajyyyy!!! Eajjjjjyyy!!!!"

....

"Yu...Yu...Yu.... little ones.... never go near mister humans.
Never."
"U...Understood easy...." x 3

In the end they never asked what really happened. From the memories
that they inherited from their parent's bean paste, they also only
knew that mister humans can't take it easy. Even though this feeling
was certainly inherited from their parents, but it's really only a
vague idea from their parent's generation. They don't really have a
clear understanding of something like the terror of Remilia that is
passed down from generation to generation.

And so, father Marisa's warning to little Marisa isn't to a
devastating degree of "yukkuri + mister humans = death", but its more
like a mellow "mister humans = a presence that won't let you take it
easy, no matter how strong the yukkuri is they will only taste
failure".

And after this, another short while passed. The summer is slowly
turning cooler. After the rest of Marisa's sisters have lost their
lives, the last little Marisa is finally old enough to leave her
parents to go off on her own.

"Little one! Take it easy!!"
"Marisa isn't little anymore!! Marisa will work hard easy!! Take it
easy!!"

And so in the end, Marisa still ignored her parent's warning and
traveled towards the forest.

Ah, it's been a bit of a wait but this story looks like it's gonna get
good. I haven't actually given much thought to how the seasons effect
yukkuri, but it seems it's a reasonably popular subject. A bit of
yukkuri suffering due to nature + human interaction...

Thanks for the TL!

I personally like the nature aspects of yukkuris, which is why I'm
writing the DOS in the city fanfic to explore on the possibilities of
an urban migration and the crisscross of paths in human and yukkuri.
If we look at our planet's history, there are very few animals that
have reasonably adapted to urbanization besides the more robust
birdies. So this is an interesting topic for me.

At the start of her independence, Marisa made some plans. The plan's
general points were:

1. Go to mister human's village, fight the strongest human there and
then win.
2. Use force to acquire food and home from mister humans.
3. Rally yukkuris from the forest and the mountains, and then turn
mister human's village into an easy place.
4. Become the chietain of the clan.
5. Get married with a beautiful yukkuri in the clan and then form a
very easy family.
6. Keep this up and eventually Marisa will become DOS Marisa one
day.

Full of vigor, Marisa traveled a distance in one day that is too much
even for humans. Marisa never realized that because she grew up in
the barren rocky outlands, she has indeed acquired the necessary
strength and toughness necessary for a chieftain.

And so, just one day's worth of yukkuri travel away from the human
village, Marisa's journey ended unexpectedly.

"YUUUAAAAAAA!!! What's this!!!!!"

The brilliance before her is more than enough to overshadow the easy
place that is the human village.

The sun's gentle rays gently illuminated the area from the openings
between the lush canopy of the trees. There's a soft springy grass
growing on the ground and a luscious throng of wild grass that even
humans can eat. Not just the grass, surrounding the area there's a
huge troop of delicious mushrooms and fragrant nuts that even yukkuris
can reach. And on top of this are the insects and caterpillars that
are attracted by the overflowing food, there's so much here that it
seems like there's no way it can ever be depleted.

Not just the food, all around the area there are holes in the trunks
that look like they're custom made for a yukkuri family. There's
almost no rocks inside, the ground has been carefully cleaned, and
even the thin cracks on the walls have been filled. It's very clear
that these are former residences leftover from another clan.

Even though it's really weird that all the yukkuris are gone, it's not
too strange that yukkuris will move because of a lack of food in the
immediately surrounding area. Marisa came to the conclusion that this
used to be a residence for some other clan, but they abandoned it and
left.

Walking around a bit in this easy place, relaxing, a few other young
independent yukkuris came to this area as if attracted by something.

"Chen, take it easy!"
"Marisa take it easy too!! Yuuuyaaaay!!! What a terrific easy place!!
Chen knows!!!"
"Yuunnn! Chen thinks so too!? There's no other yukkuris living here
right now!!"
"Chen doesn't know!! What a waste to leave this easy place like
this!!"
"Yuuuunnn!! Then it's settled!! This place will become Marisa's easy
place!"
"Chen knows!!"

And so, Marisa's foolish lifelong plans immediately changed
directions. She will settle here not too far from the human village,
and start up a new clan here.

Compared to her original plan, Marisa didn't really have her mind set
on fighting with the not-easy mister humans. Even if there's no
possible way Marisa could lose to mister human. But fighting hurts
and so Marisa can't take it easy. And in the completely unlikely
event that Marisa loses and takes it easy forever, then it's
completely not worth it at all. On top of that, having never been to
the human's village, she doesn't know how much of an easy place it
will be either. Compared to the faraway and uncertain easy place, the
forest before her is already the best easy place.

And so Marisa's new life started.

A very easy home and lots of food, there's so much that they can take
whatever they want and there's still a ton left over. Seeing how easy
this place is, the newly independent yukkuris trickled in and started
to live here along with Marisa as well. In a few short weeks,
Marisa's easy place became a clan that can't just be written off as
"large".

"Chen doesn't know. If we don't decide on a chieftain right now, then
we can't take it easy anymore!"
"That's right... Alice finally found such a city-sect easy place,
Alice wants to get along with every yukkuri!"
"Mukyuuu! If that's the case, then Patchouli thinks Marisa is a good
choice as the clan's chieftain!"
"Yuuuu!? Is it ok??"
"If it's Marisa, then this will certainly become a city-sect clan!"
"Yu. But Marisa still isn't used to life in the forest. There's so
much Marisa doesn't know."
"Chen knows... But whatever Marisa can't do, then everybody can help
as well so it's perfectly ok!"

...

"Yu, Marisa understands!! Marisa will be this clan's chieftain!!"
"Mukyuuu!! Let Patchouli help too!! Mukyuu!"

Following the trend naturally, and then slowly spreading. Marisa
demonstrated a great leadership ability ever since she founded this
clan early on, and so was elected chieftain without a second thought.
And then the council members were immediately solidified as the three
yukkuris; Chen that Marisa first met and Chen's mate Alice, and the
intelligent Patchouli.

And then...

"Miyonn, Chieftain Marisa!? Let Miyon join this clan?"
"Take it easy!! There's still a lot of.... YUYU!?"
"What's wrong miyon? Is there something on Reimu's face miyon?"
"...Yu? Take it easy."
"(Yuuuu. What an easy Reimu.) T....T..Take it easy with Marisa
always!!"
".....? .....YuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUU!!!?!"

One day, a Reimu joined the clan with a group of young yukkuris.

A refined attitude, a beautiful and shiny ribbon, and a very easy
bottom. The first time she greeted Reimu, a small electrified feeling
whirled around Marisa's little peni-peni.
Maybe that's what they call love at first sight.

Maybe it was too sudden, so Reimu took more than five minutes to
accept. And so Marisa easily acquired all of what she wanted. A
position as chieftain, a lifelong partner to take it easy, and an easy
place.

When the summer was about to end, the yukkuris in the clan have
started to get used to their new life. The yukkuris that ended up in
the clan the earliest have all found partners, and many of them are
pregnant. There are no obstacles between Marisa and Reimu, so the
only thing left is to have easy little ones, form their little easy
family, and Marisa would've perfected her yu-life.

... But some things happened and delayed Marisa and Reimu's plans for
having little ones.

"MUKYUUUUUUUU!!! MARISAAAAA!! LIDDLE ONESSSS!!!!"

The tragedy happened to Marisa's close friend Patchouli. Of course
the Marisa Patchouli is calling out to isn't the chieftain Marisa, but
her mate DAZE-Marisa.

"Mukyuuuu... little one.... Patchouli said it's dangerous outside....
mukyuu...."

Patchouli gave birth to one little Marisa mammalian style. Little
Marisa is full of curiosity, and even though she has a bright future,
there's a saying curiosity killed the cat.

"Marisa will go hunt with Daddy!! Slowly---! Slowly---!"

The little Marisa secretly snuck out to the spring that the clan uses
for drinking water to play while father DAZE-Marisa was out hunting,
and mother Patchouli was taking an afternoon nap. And she started to
imitate her father Marisa, the way Marisa used her hat to float in the
water in order to pick water weeds. Compared to the innate terror of
mister water, Marisa's urge to float freely on top of the water using
her hat won over her instinct.

"Marisa is going to sit on mister hat eajy!! Yu!!"

Splash. Splash.

The end result, of course, Marisa capsizing. Drowning.

On top of that, when DAZE-Marisa found out that the little Marisa was
her little baby, she rushed over.

"YUAAAAAAA!! Little one, wait easy!!! Marisa will save....YUUU!?!?!"

Splash.

Because she was in too much of a rush, she drowned.

The result was that Patchouli lost her whole family in an instant.

The clan has never faced any danger, and up until now the clan has
only increased in numbers. The council members, unused to losing any
yukkuris, appeared to be over-reacting. Especially the Patchouli that
this tragedy befell upon, she wrecked her paste brain for ideas in
order to prevent this from happening again.

And finally, a conclusion.

"Yu!! Everybody listen to Marisa!!"
"Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy!" x 300
"It is now forbidden to refresh in this clan!"
"... CAN'T TAKE IT EASY!!!!" X 300
"But don't worry!! It's not forever!"
"?" x 300

Marisa and her council members decided on a limited restriction on
refreshing. The contents are very simple. There will be no
refreshing before winter . If any yukkuris want little ones, then
they will give birth during winter.

Like we said in the beginning, for a normal clan this is essentially a
suicide order. The amount of food that an adult yukkuri can collect
during the fall is barely enough for themselves. If they added in
little ones during this time then it's a pretty guaranteed death by
starvation.

But if you factor in the unique traits of this clan then it no longer
applies.

Because this is an unprecedented easy place, there's tons of food all
around the place. If you work your hardest during fall to gather
food... every yukkuri should be able to gather up to 10 yukkuri's
worth of food. In this case, all they need to do is to store the
food.

Then during the winter time, they will seal up their homes completely,
and refresh as much as they want. The baby yukkuris will be born in
the house, and the yukkuris don't need to worry about little ones
sneaking outside. The parents won't go outside either, and so they
don't need to worry about becoming single parents while one yukkuris
is pregnant or taking care of little ones. And then the yukkuris can
use this time to complete the education of the very easy little ones.
By the time the baby yukkuris grow to the size of koyukkuris, winter
should over. Then the yukkuris can bring the little baby yukkuris
into the beauty of Spring, watch them grow up and take off into the
world.

"Wow!! Chief is a genius!!"
"Chen knows!!"
"NNNNHOOOOO!!! REFRESHED!!!!--"

After listening to the explanation, every single yukkuri complemented
the council members with sparkles in their eyes. It's true that
winter's not a very happy time according to the memory inherited from
their bean paste. Accompanying the danger of freezing or starving to
death, the worst thing is losing your partner because of some careless
event, and then needing to live alone in the small dark cave all by
yourself. But without the fear of death and the possibility of being
able to take it easy with the most easy little ones, even if you
aren't a yukkuri, you would be able to understand the excitement.

So this clan's yukkuris in the next few months desperately hunted and
foraged, but there's still some that had accidents and lost their
lives having never refreshed in their short yu-life. But almost all
of the couples safely reached the winter time, saved up enough food so
that they can refresh, and sealed up their entrances.

Everybody, for the sake of being able to take it easy more, were
especially tolerant.

-----------------------------

and so back to the situation at hand.

Deep within the house is a mountain made from the stored food. Reimu
has a stalk on her head that's has six little yukkuris growing from
it. In the middle of the cave is an especially soft bird-nest shaped
bed made out of soft dried grass by Marisa, made especially for this
day.

She worked so hard in order for this bed to be soft and warm. The
little ones will for sure love it.

shake shake. Snap.

.... plop!

"D...D....Dage id eajy!!!"
""Take it easy~!""

"Yuunn!! Mwommie!! Daddy!!! Eajy!! Eajy!!"
"Yu!! What a healthy little one that looks just like Marisa!"
"Yufu!! But the eye-eye looks a lot like Reimu's!!"
"Mwommie!! Daddy!! Weimu's hungwy!"
"Want to munch-munch!"
"Yu! Wait a little bit, Marisa will give mister stalk to little ones
to eat now!"
"Munch-munch easy!"
"munch-munch~ Happiness~!"
"Are little ones cold?"
"Eajy!! Mister bed-bed is so soft and so comfortable!"
"Yuuu, but Mawisha is a little bit cold!! Come rub-rub!"
"Daddy come wub-wub! Wub-wub--- Happiness~!!"
"Rub-rub~ Happiness!"
"YUUNNN!!! Weimu wants to wub-wub with mwommie too!!"
"Rub-rub-- Happiness~!!"
"Weub-wub--- Happiness!!!!"

When Marisa was little, she rarely said "happiness~!!". She can only
rub-rub with the dry malnourished faces of her parents, or daydream
while staring at the infinitely far away forest.

And Marisa thought.

If she can give these easy little ones all she can in order for them
to be happy, the happiness she was never able to obtain seemed like it
would come back as well.

"Daddy? Daddy's crying easy?"
"Daddy!! Dage id eajy!!
"Yu! Yufufu... Daddy is crying because there's too much happiness.
Daddy is taking it very easy."
"Yuunnn, so weird."
"Yufufu, when little ones grow up little ones will understand. Good
night easy."
"Going to sleep-sleep easy!! snore...snore..."
".... take it easy."

-------------------------

The next day, strange events invaded Marisa's home.

Crack!!

The house that Marisa's family was sleeping in had a loud noise that
sounded like something poked into the house.

"Y...Yu? What?"
"Marisa, there's a weird noise in the entrance of the house."
"Yunn, can't dage it eajy."
"Yuyu. Marisa go take a look, little ones are waiting on the bed
easy."
"Yuuuu, understood easy."
"Yuuuu, what? YUUUGAAAAA!! What's this!?!?"

Marisa saw that the "boundary" that she put up at the entrance of the
cave was penetrated by something she has never seen before.

"YUUUUUUUUU!!! Get out easy!!! Hurry up and disappear easy!!!"

From a human's perspective, it would look like the palm sized object
was shaped like a spoon that had been cut off in the front. A silvery
glittering metal tool. The metal object, completely ignoring what
Marisa was saying, slowly began moving left and right in order to dig
out the little stones and sticks that made up the "boundary". The
"boundary" that Marisa worked so hard on so that the little ones
wouldn't feel the cold, was opened in an instant and the freezing air
blasted into the cave.

"Marisa what's.... WHY DID MISTER BOUNDARY DISSAPEARRR!?!?"
"YUAAAAAAA!! The silvery mister shiny-shiny broke the boundary!!!"

Shocked by the interruption of the easy time that they've been waiting
for since the beginning of Fall, not just Reimu, but even Chieftain
Marisa forgot about the option of running away, but instead faced the
enemy outside. What they saw there was:

A human holding the weird meter long stick, with the weird broken
spoon attached to the tip. This tool is something that the yukkuris
who kept on avoiding the humans will never know about. The humans in
the village call it "The stick".

"Yu... M..Mister human..."
"Yu? Why....?"

Because mister humans can't take it easy so they never went near
them. The mister humans that lived not very far away but never came
here. So why did they suddenly appear here after the snow had fallen,
and the yukkuris started to seal up their home.

In the instance when Reimu and Marisa blanked out, they were tipped
over by mister human.

""Yu?""

And in the next instant.

Stab! Stab!

"Yu...YUUGGIIIIIIII!!!!!"

The two yukkuris feet were impaled by "The Stick".

"WHYYYYY!! MISTER FOOOTTT!!! MARISA'S EASY MISTER FOOOOOTTTTT!!"

The human seemed like he didn't even hear the questioning scream, and
covered up the sticks and stones used to make the "boundary" with
snow.

"W..Whhhhhyyy.... STOP IDDDDDD!!!! If mister boundary isn't covering
the house then it will be so cold that Marisa won't be able to take it
easyyyy!!!"

But Marisa's voice still didn't reach the human. He conveniently
buried the sticks and stones into the snow.

"WHYYYY ARE YOU DOING THISSSSS!!!! MARISA DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!?!!"

Then the human stuck "The Stick" into the nest, and the front part
hooked onto the little one's bed. The bed was dragged out carefully
so that it wouldn't be damaged.

The five little cute koyukkuris were crying nonstop from the terror
and the cold.

"YuGII!! YUBIIIII!!! Eajjjjyyy!!!!.... Fallinggggg!!!! YUBIII!!!"

And then the human lifted up the part that was hooked up to the bed,
and then flipped it over. The little crying koyukkuris were also
dumped into the snow. While the little koyukkuris and Marisa were
still confused at the events, the ownerless bed was dumped onto the
snow and flattened by the human's mister foot.

"E....jy..... Misder bed.... eajyyy...."
"Yu... lick lick... so cold..."

The little koyukkuris, still not understanding what has just happened,
slowly rubbed up against the bed that was stomped into the snow.
Using lick-lick to stick their tongue into the snow, rubbing the bed
with their foot in an attempt to revive the warmness that they still
felt just a second ago. But the flattened bed will never turn back
into a nice soft bed.

"Sho cold.... eajijijijijiyyyy...."
"Eajy.... rub...rub...."

Not just that, but the newly born little koyukkuris can't hop, they
can only crawl. And on top of this, the frozen foot of the little
koyukkuris can do nothing other than shake. Before the snow-buried
bed, the five koyukkuris couldn't return to the nest. They could only
rub up against each other and attempt to warm up their bodies with rub-
rub.

"YUUUUUUUUU!! Miter human!!! Stop ittt!!! It doesn't matter what you
do to Marisa, please let little ones in the houseee!!!"

While she was saying this, the human took "The Stick" and poked it in
the house again, and dug out the small mountain of food that Reimu and
Marisa collected during the fall with every ounce of their strength.

splish splish splish.

Then it was spilled all over the surrounding snow.

"STOPPPPPPPPP!!! The important mister munch-munch for the little
onessssss!!!!"

Then he repeated this two or three more times.

Even though Marisa can't see into the house, but 90% of the food that
they collected during fall has been spilled around the area. Of
course, Marisa, turned upside down with a huge hole in her foot, will
never be able to recollect it.

In the end the human didn't listen to a single thing Marisa said,
Marisa never even saw his face. He let out a breath, and painted a
symbol on top of the fading one that was located at about the same
height as the man. He said "this one's finished", turned around, took
a deep breath, and started moving towards another area.

"Yu... wait...."

When the human passed by Marisa's family again, the little baby Marisa
shaking on top of the remains of the bed used her last bit of strength
to call out.

"Why...? Misder.... hu...man..."

The mister human passed before little Marisa, walked past Chieftain
Marisa, and walked straight towards the council member Chen and
Alice's home.

Crack!!

Behind Marisa, a familiar sound resounded.

"YUUUAAAAA!! Mister silvery shiny-shiny, don't break mister
boundary.... mi....ster human...?"
"C...Chen doesn't know...!?"
"Chen!! Alice!!! Run!!!"

Marisa screamed, but it was too late.

""Yu?""

Stab! Stab!

"C...Chen doesn't get itttttt!!!!"
"WHYYYYYY!!! Mister fooooott!!! Alice's city-sect mister fooooottt!!!"
"WHY WOULD YOU DO THISSSSS!!! Alice didn't do anything!!?!?!"

Behind Marisa, Alice and Chen screamed. And they could hear the newly
born little baby Chen and baby Alice's cries.

"YUBIII!! YUBIIII!!! Fallinggg!!! Don't get itttt!!!"

plop plop plop plop.

"W...Whhhhyyy..... eaj...... mister bed..... so cold...."
"Yu.... lick...lick.... don't... get it..."
"Eajijijijiyyyyyyy... rub...rub....."

splish splish splish.

"Stopppp itttt!!! This is the city-sect mister munch-much for the
little oneeeeeeess!!!!"

....

After this, behind Marisa, she could hear the cries of countless
families. She lost track of how much time has passed before she
stopped screaming about mister human and to run away easy. She can
only continue crying after being turned over and unable to move.

If Marisa looked closely a little ways before her, she can see yukkuri
couples also flipped upside down, with huge holes in their foot,
unable to move and can only cry. And then, before the basket-ball
sized manjus there are countless little manjus also taking their last
breaths while huddled together.

Reimu, next to Marisa, didn't make a sound ever since she was flipped
over and had her foot opened. Maybe the one stab had reached her core
filling and she immediately died.

But from the looks of the situation, that was probably a much better
fate.

"Yu... want... to... dage id e..."
"Eaaaajjjjy.... little babies..... eajjjjyyyyyyy."

In the end, the little koyukkuris that couldn't move died painfully on
top of the snow that buried the bed, bereft of salvation.

From now on, every day the little ones will munch-munch to their
hearts content in the warm home, and when Spring comes they will be
surrounded by the beautiful flower and grass, enveloped by the warm
sun, and live out a very easy yu-life.

But before Marisa's eyes were five sad dead little koyukkuri, even
their tears were frozen into a shade of white.

".... jijijijyyyyyyyyyy...... d...daddy...."
"......yu!!!"

Five?.... there's one little koyukkuri missing!!

".... dage id eajy. Daddy..."
"Yu...!! Take it easy!!! Little oneee!!! Little oneeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!"

Using all her effort to peer into the home, there's still a koyukkuri
that seemed to be safely inside the house.

"Big sis.... everyone..... dage id eajy....."
"Little one!!! Don't come here!!!"
"YUBIII!!"

Marisa stopped the little ko-Marisa that wanted to run up to her
little sisters.

"Little one!! Listen closely!! Is there still mister munch-munch in
the house?!"
"Y...Yu.... only Daddy's is left..."
"....Yuuu, little one. That's little one's."
"Yu? Then daddy's mider munch-munch will be gone!! Daddy won't be
able to take it easy!!"

Marisa already made up her mind.

"Little one. Marisa already... Daddy won't ... be able to take it
easy anymore...."
"WHYYY WOULD YOU SAY THATTTTT!?!"
"Daddy... Daddy can't walk anymore.... so... little one... before
mister spring comes... take it easy alone!!"
"YUUUUU!! Can't take it easy like that!!!"
"Don't worry. Little one is... Marisa and Reimu's easy little
one...."
"Yu...Yuuuu...."
"So.... before Mister spring comes... eat mister-munch-munch... and
use mister munch-munch in place of mister bed-bed and sleep-sleep..."

This is Marisa's dream. This is Marisa's last hope.

"Take it easy!!"
"YUUUUAAAAAAAAANNNN!!! Understood eay!!! Dage id eajjjjjyyy!!!"

Marisa's parents was chased onto a not easy place by the hands of
mister human. Marisa life is ended by the hands of mister human.

But, even though this tragedy has happened, Marisa's dream, Marisa's
easy hope will continue to shine warmly and brilliantly in the
future.

And then, even though Marisa's happy future was ruthlessly robbed from
her, she was the only one in the whole clan that passed away with a
content look on her face after three days.

And the only ko-Marisa that escaped the grasp of mister human, eating
the leftover food, using the mound of mister munch-munch in substitute
of mister bed-bed, fought valiantly against the cold.

But the cold will continue to lower the body temperature, and in order
to maintain the body temperature Marisa needs to munch-munch. After
munch-munch then the food will continue to decrease and become even
less able to maintain Marisa's body temperature. So then there's even
more munch-munch.

And in the end, no matter how Marisa tried to maintained her body
temperature, she has neither ability nor material to seal up the
entrance, and the condition cannot improve.

And so, two days before Chieftan Marisa passed away, the little ko-
Marisa finished all the food and simply died.

---------------------------

The forest welcomed Spring.

The last fall more than 300 yukkuris gathered here, counting the
little koyukkuris that were born during winter, the giant clan that
reached over 1500 yukkuris, was pulled out by human hands and
completely exterminated.

And then these corpses will melt along with the snow, bringing
nutrients to the earth that nourished the forest. This goes for bed
made for the koyukkuris and the food gathered during the fall as
well. With the abundant nutrients feeding the flower and plants, this
place will provide a very easy place for this year's yukkuris as
well.

And the cleanly settled caves and tree holes will probably give the
newcomer yukkuris the perfect home.

There's no lack of materials that can make up the "boundary" for the
yukkuris home. Because last year's sticks and stones were preserved
as well.

As long as yukkuris never change, the perfect easy place last year
will also be the perfect easy place this year for the huge amount of
yukkuris.

.... that's right.

So perfect that they will never even think about going into the human
village.

Welcoming Spring, the baby boomer season of Spring again visited the
rocky outcroppings in the mountains. Marisa's parents again welcomed
this new life, enjoy this little bit of easy their harsh life
provided.

"Marisa and Reimu's little one... is getting born easy~"
"Yu~ Little one is taking it very easy."
"These little ones... hope they can be like their older sister, and
grow up healthy."
"Yeah.... everyone.... are little ones doing well?"
"Of course they will be. The little one before too, what a very easy
little Marisa."
"Just like that..."
"...just like that."

shake shake. Snap.
plop.

"D...D...Dage id eajy!!!!"
""Take it easy!!""

Highly ironic that yukkuris call humans selfish and then go about
invading their homes and stealing from them... or in this case,
planning to. A great story with an interesting mix of everything. Also
1500 yukkuris? That's a big damn slaughter. You could probably start
up a business with those amounts...

Ugh... they already created a perfect yukkuri "trap" that will keep
them from ever bothering the village, and all it needs is fertilizing
to maintain the soil. Isn't killing the yukkuri on top of it
excessive, when they are other ways to maintain it? Calmed down enough
to avoid my original sadistic rant... but if I ever start up my
"Yukkuri revenge fic" project, that village is definitely going to be
one of the targets.

I can't help but be disappointed by that story. I wasn't expecting a
happy ending, but I wasn't expecting it to end with such a completely
senseless slaughter. I was figuring the "perfect easy place" was a
place to trap wild yukkuris for pets or food... not a death trap for
the sake of a death trap. I like yukkuris too much for stories that
end like that to be anything but upsetting to me.

P.S.: I meant to send this to the group earlier, but accidentally sent
it straight to sender. Lemme fix the stuff that ended up like that and
submit it to the group for archival purposes.

Killing them is part of the defense mechanism. If they didn't go in and
kill them, their numbers would explode (remember, 300 became 1500 in one
year. At that rate, next year it'd be 7500, then 37k the next, etc.)
and they'd quickly overrun the town. By doing it this way, they keep
the population down, with the added bonus that they fertilize the area
for the next year.

This village hasn't done anything wrong. How is this making a "death
trap for the sake of a death trap" when otherwise the yukkuri would
very surely have invaded and overrun the human village? This is pest
control.

Funny how some people object to violence against yukkuris when they
act like trash but are totally fine with people who protect their
belongings being subjected to suffering and pain.

Except that the story establishes that the place is so perfect that
yukkuris would never even think to approach the village when they can
stay there instead. Killing the yukkuris when they're already never
going to bother the village because they have a much better place is
excessive.

Sorry for the double-post, but I thought of another issue:

I'd also have to object to characterizing it as defending their
property. Creating a better place for yukkuris to live so they won't
bother people is defending your property. On the violent end, so is
setting up traps to kill them or scare them away if they try to enter
your home, farm, or garden. Creating a better place for them to live
so they won't bother you and then killing them wholesale now that
they're no longer any sort of threat is just a massacre.

However, we must remember that the reason why this site is so perfect is
because of the killing that happens every winter. If they didn't do
that, the area would not be fertilized and so would not be as bountiful,
nor would the trees be vacant for colonization. Thus, it is no longer
as perfect a home to the yukkuri, because there is less food and vacant
living space, and so it would no longer draw yukkuri away from the human
village.

And it is defending their property because otherwise the yukkuri would
invade their village, bringing all the problems associated with them.

In an unrelated note, could people please start cutting away the old
quotes? These reply chains are getting really big, and there's generally
no need to quote a mail four replies back.

True. I was just wondering if there wasn't a less destructive way to
fertilize the area than wholesale slaughter of yukkuri. Ultimately, I
suppose it doesn't matter -- like it or not, that's the solution they
settled on for this story.

I suppose the yukkuris would eventually invade the village once the
food supply in their own village was depleted, but I would personally
rather deal with that eventuality when it arrives, instead of engaging
in a preemptive strike.

I must admit that looking at it again now that I'm more calm, this
isn't just clear-cut needless cruelty like featured in some of the
other fics. Whether or not it's actually necessary, the villagers
obviously believe it is -- that to protect their homes from yukkuri
invasion, they need to not only lure them away from the village, but
eradicate them before they can decide to move on.

Toawa

Exactly. Remember, the main resource in contention is not food, it's
space. If they didn't clear it out every year, the yukkuri would
quickly run out of space and go searching again, right into the village.

If you take a look at Marisa's plan, that is what the typical yukkuri
thinks.

1) Humans are selfish and eat all the food and it's not right that
yukkuris don't have any of that food.
2) Humans hog all the space/easy places and it's not right that
yukkuris don't have any of that space.
3) Yukkuris are rabidly stupid to a degree where they think they can
win against humans.
4) If there's no food then just steal from humans.

Thus the author went into exhaustive detail about how yukkuris survive
before winter, just so that people would see what their train of
thought was. The trap is in essence the lure that keeps yukkuris AWAY
from the human village so people don't have to deal with them.

The death of yukkuris fertilize the forest, making it a lush paradise
compared to some unknown human village they've never been to. Without
the death of yukkuris, it'd be just a normal patch of forest, possibly
already inhabited, and thus never lure any yukkuris in. Space, like
you guys have mentioned, is also a big problem. Without the death of
yukkuris, there would be no trap, and the village would be forced to
deal with thieving yukkuris from their farmlands. Yukkuris are the
sacrifice in this story instead of bugs, raccoons, foxes, and whatever
other pests farmer regularly protect against.

So how do you protect against pests? 1) Keep it away 2) Chase it away
once it's already there. The second is ALWAYS more expensive. You
incur damage to your crops on top of the expense in time and energy
chasing away said yukkuri. It's not a "preemptive strike" against
yukkuris, it's plain and simple prevention.

So how do you keep them away? Make a nice fat trap that they can't
resist. If you want to use artificial fertilizer to keep yukkuris
away, that'd cost a huge amount of money on top of probably not having
guaranteed results and on top of space constraints, so you'd have to
fertilize a bigger and bigger area each year to accomodate for the
super-booming yukkuri population. Think of yukkuris as locusts; you
can protect against one, but not 500.

But yukkuris make good fertilizer, so that kills 2 birds with one
stone. How much do you have to spend to get an equivalent of 1500
yukkuris' worth of nutrients? Probably more than a farming village
could afford.

Okay, the Fridge Logic just hit me.

I'm not too clear from the story whether the human could actually see
into the nest holes, or whether he was working by touch with the
stick. In the latter case, this is a recipe for disaster. Although
having their foot impaled by a sharp implement would be a death
sentence for most yukkuri, there are a few that are tough enough or
have advanced enough regeneration for this to be little more than an
annoyance. Of these, the Mokou and Mima are potential threats to
people. And then there's the ones that couldn't weather it, but would
still be a bad idea to poke with a stick. An Utsuho would explode, a
Medicine would release poison, and an Iku could counter with lightning
if it wasn't killed with the first strike.

If they can see into the nest holes, they can avoid provoking or
setting off these yukkuris... but unless they have a back-up plan,
they're stuck with them unless they decide to pack up and leave on
their own.

Fortunately, all of the types that could present a problem to this
plan are rare. Unfortunately, it only takes one of them to screw
everything up... and suddenly they've gone from "keeping yukkuri from
invading the village" to "given yukkuri a reason to invade the village
and have abilities ranging from 'annoying', to 'can vaporize you if
you look at them funny' or 'emit deadly radiation and will level the
village if you poke them too hard.'"

Or, alternately, if you're just shoving the stick into the hole and
using touch to hit the yukkuris, you've potentially killed yourself
with poison, lasers, fire, or lightning... or leveled your yukkuri
trap -- and depending on the proximity of the human village, it may
have been destroyed by the blast or been rendered uninhabitable by
fallout.

I dunno; the yukkuri call out to Mister Humans, so they can see the
humans, and presumably the humans can see them. Poison would mean
Medicine, and they don't leave Nameless hill... As for the rest, I
guess they're probably rare enough that the villagers never really think
of them as a threat. After all, theoretically that hole in your back
yard could house a poisonous snake, but odds are it's just a mole. And
if they hit an Utsuho, they won't have time to worry about reflecting on
their situation }:)

Did anyone else realize that this could have almost perfectly set up
"Dosu in the City"? The top circle consisted of a Reimu, Chen, Patchy,
and Marisa, they were in the forest but decently close to a human
village, and they were gaining numbers. It's just the killing at the
end that messed it up. And that the Marisa wasn't Dosu yet.

@Nezumi

Well, in the story the guy broke up the cave's entrance, causing the
yukkuris to come out to see what's going on. It's not like he was
just jerking the stick around in the cave. I'd say if he saw any of
those dangerous yukkuris run out, then he'd make like a tree and gtfo
and tell the others, and then there would be bigger groups of humans
coming in to pacify the yukkuris because now they're a danger.

Also, I was kind of surprised at how similar this story premise was to
my Dosu in the City. Maybe you can just look at this as the Alternate
Ending. :D

Well, one more thing for the Humans is that most of these far more
dangerous Yukkuris leave pretty visible marks of their presence,
whether by scorching trees, poisoned wildlife around, or even
irradiated plants. I suppose if 3 eyed squirrels started showing up,
the people of the Village would start looking into getting Geiger
Counter and lead lined bunkers before clearing out the nest areas.

While it ended on a sad note, I ended up liking this story overall.
From the yukkuri equivalent of poverty, to the riches of the "easy
place" and then having everything taken from them. Bit of an emotional
ride, plus i like a good desperate struggle, like that of the one baby
that happened to be hidden in the nest. But it seems a bit of a
stretch that the adult left outside with a foot wound survived two
days longer than the baby that had the makeshift food bed.

Stop assuming that because people like abyuse that mean they hate
yukkuris or something.
If you bothered reading other people comments you can find that many
people who like abyuse also like FF pics and while they may cheer or
get a laugh during an abyuse story, they may also squeal and giggle in
joy at a yukkuri being cute in the ff works.

Plus Nezumi was rather blind about how good this yukkuris were, they
weren't shitheads, but both in the prequels and in this story, we saw
how they had very notorious scum mindsets, specially about humans (in
the prequels Dosu taught a passive supremacist mindset about humans
and non yukkuris in general, to the point of considering kidnapping
humans to force them into the village to make more vegetables for the
yukkuris, and in this story Marisa was outright considering invading
the village and taking it over herself.), while the trap maybe cruel,
it becomes a necessesity when yukkuris like that frolic in the wild,
and all that without adding the notorious ecological damage yukkuris
do if their population is left uncheck (the prequel showing the
consequences of that happening.)
