As if only the time around this area stopped.
The skin color is a bit blemished, never moving.
Rolling around at the end of the path, a lonely dead body that nobody
cares to touch.

...

On the way home from school, two young men have discovered along the
way an adult yukkuri's corpse. Maybe any sort of corpse or dead thing
would attract the interest of these young boys.

Most adults will only think "dirty" or "saw something disgusting" and
ignore the body, but this greatly piqued the interest of the childish
hearts of these boys. This interest there is purely because of the
human innate fear of death. Or maybe it's because of interest in the
difference in the life form that they normally see? Canceling their
original plan of play around in the mountains, they knelt down near
the corpse and started examining it closely.

Looking at it from the outside, there's no clear marks and wounds. Is
it the rare death from old age? Or maybe it's an emotional death from
too many sad things?

The latter is the most common.

Because the yukkuri's skin is unexpectedly tough, unless there's some
special cases there won't really be any death is caused by the skin
broking and the filling spilling out.

Because of some reason they stepped into human territory, get beaten,
stepped on, and then run away crying. Because of the damage caused by
humans, dying somewhere quietly after throwing up their filling. This
sort of case is common place.

Compared to this, the strangest part is the eye. The boys also
immediately noticed this. A simple eye that seemed energetic and
lively, and looked as if it can be drawn by anybody, is now completely
lifeless. It's just looking straight forward along the ground. Maybe
it's because of this expression that it makes people think that this
yukkuri would be about to talk. The mouth is half open, as if she's
still going to say something.

The word is that fully grown yukkuris will gradually lack emotions,
and become something that can only smirk as if it's making fun of
you. Maybe this is also one of the reasons that people don't have
generally have a good impressions for yukkuris.

Even though the expression has not changed, the painful scars were
definitively present. Little rocks and the wounds they caused were
stuck all throughout the body. It's probably because of the repeated
impacts with the ground and rolling around. Come to think of it, it
was probably extremely painful. Yukkuris don't have a lot of
resilience on their skin except for the bottom. Plus the lack of
athletic abilities, this sort of life form could only be manipulated
by the whims of the world.

In the same time that this yukkuri was wailing around, it's most
important black hat seemed to have fallen off several feet away from
her. It's mental condition was probably so messed up at that time
that it probably never even knew what happened to its own hat. Even
though if the owner would be screaming and crying if the hat left the
body, that owner is no longer here.

The ownerless hat can only lay there with an unfathomable loneliness.

The filling expanded in a fan like shape from the mouth that was
touching the floor. It seems like until it was unable to maintain its
own life, this yukkuri kept on throwing up its filling. Examining the
yukkuri closely, one can see that the body has already broken down.
The shape is quite strange. It's not an elastic ball shape, but the
bottom and the back of the head looked as if it was a ball that has
lost its air and sunk in. This yukkuri's final pose left a feeling of
hollowness, and a sense that it never existed.

Unable to maintain its shape, the shriveled up skin that has changed
color has a particular spot that was especially dark. From the eyes
that extended to the floor, there was a little puddle.

Tears.

The final result from being unable to move because of weakness.
Unable to recover, maintaining the half smile, Marisa spat out her
filling while crying in pain. Only until she threw up enough so that
her body changed shapes, she finally experienced relief from the pain
that she suffered. The huge body that could leap through the air with
grace now lay on the floor, never moving once.

The boys let out a sigh.

The yukkuri that their parents and relative bought hopped around like
giant balls. The beautiful wonderful yukkuris that you never get
tired of looking at. Looking at this yukkuri in this little space, it
seemed to become this heavy dead object on the floor.

Even though it's a yukkuri, but a corpse is still a corpse. The first
thing they did was take a stick and poke it. The skin has no
elasticity, and the stick easily went into the body. Looks like they
should be careful with this.

They threw away the stick that was covered with filling, and decided
that they would push it a little bit. This time it doesn't just look
heavy, but it indeed feels heavy. The yukkuris that they always
kicked and stepped on, for some reason it was extremely heavy this
time around.

They pushed the yukkuris so that it was lying on the floor and faced
the sky. The skin was pulled along to the side, and the face was
stretched apart as if someone was deliberately stretching it. The
smirking face twisted and changed shape, and looked like a twisted
happy smiling Buddha. This humorous face made the boys giggle with
glee.

Facing the result of death are two very young boys. Their brains have
not yet formed a solid concept of "death", and they're not afraid of
it.

And the one decisive element is that yukkuris are in reality just
manjus. Come to think about it, it's very simple. In any sort of
generation, there will be kids that toy around with insects. They toy
around with insects because they don't have something that can link
the image of "pain" to the boy's thought process.

Blood. Flesh. Emotions.

These are things they cannot see or feel in a yukkuri. If its the
body of a dead corpse than this is an even more abstract concept.

Just when they thought: "Alright, now how should we play with this?"

"Yu---"
"Yu-- yuyu--"

They heard these sounds.
The boys turned to look at each other. There's nobody else here
besides them. There's no yukkuris near them, and this one is
definitely dead.

"Yu..."

But this is a special "yu" sound that seemed as if it was coming
through something. There's no question about it, it's a yukkuri's
noise... and it is definitely coming from the dead yukkuri before
them.

As unbelievable as it seemed, the boys still inched closer and put
their ears on the flat part of the yukkuri that could be considered
their chin. From a yukkuri's standpoint it would be the abdomen.
Sounds of something moving.
Sounds of yukkuris.
If their speculation wasn't wrong...

"Yu~~"

The sound entered their ears more clearly than before. To put it
simply, this Marisa is a mother, and it is pregnant. Is there a
reason why this one was out walking about when it should be in its
nest quietly resting? Even though they thought about this for a bit,
the simplest conclusion was that Marisa probably went to forage for
her belly's koyukkuri.

Even though its such a simple thing like that, but the result looks
like it was suicidal idea. Seeing this yukkuri using its cumbersome
body to pull up vegetables with a "YUHEYYY~!" sound, Marisa was beaten
without knowing why.

(Marisa didn't do anything wrong!?!? Even though Marisa found these
vegetables!?!? Even though Marisa needs to replenish nutrients for
little babies!?!?)

Because she was pregnant so she couldn't run away swiftly, how about
standing up to humans to face them directly? Even though she thought
about puff-puff to intimidate the humans, but she still remembered
that it was a different situation before. Resisting her boiling
desire to fight back, Marisa decided to escape with all her might.
This completed the incredibly difficult decision making process for
her.

Meanwhile, the human never thought about killing Marisa. It seems
like he is not the type of person that wants to chase down and kill
all yukkuris no matter what they did. Looking at the slower-than-
usual Marisa, still escaping with all her might, he thought that "this
one probably learned its lesson!"

Even though if he gave chase he can destroy her, he didn't do it.
Patting himself on the back for not stooping to that position, the
farmer's owner tossed out the irresponsible phrase of "Just take it
easy in the forest!" and went back to his farm.

In the end, Marisa died.

But until she died, she was probably regretting everything, even
though the series of events didn't develop in the worst possible
way.

Yukkuris' birth is shrouded by mystery. Even if you cut off the stalk
that has koyukkuris from the mother, if you use some sugar water to
continue giving it nutrients the koyukkuris can be born normally. The
connection between the mother and the koyukkuri's bodies are very
superficial.

The mammalian type birth is even more mysterious. There's no mammal
like organs like a placenta that connects the koyukkuri to the
mother. Even if you say it's like giving birth to an egg, the
koyukkuri is born completely ready for growth. So maybe if you say
"it lets the koyukkuris grow to completion inside their bodies", then
it might be a more accurate assertion.

So in the end, even if the mother has died, if the corpse is safe then
the koyukkuris can be safely born.

"Yu~~"

This ignited a spark of excitement in the boys.

Really want to see the koyukkuris inside...

Harboring the feeling of playing doctor, they got ready to dissect
Marisa's corpse. Of course, if the corpse was a mammal or a bird then
it'd be completely different. In the end, yukkuris are manjus, and
what leaks out is bean paste. The difference between blood and
beanpaste is like the difference between the sky and mud on the
ground.

Also, animal corpses will immediately start to decompose, and if
there's no outside wounds then it's even more bizarre. There's no way
anybody would want to touch it. However, manjus need several days
before they begin to spoil. Because when yukkuris die they become
real "manjus", so there's nothing disgusting about the corpses and
there's no sanitary concern. There's no expert knowledge required for
treatment.

To put it simply, this is just playing tea time with "dissection". So
it's just "cutting apart a manju".

They took out tools for the dissection.
Scissors, utility knives, etc.
Even though these are really simple tools, but for a yukkuri it's more
than enough.
While chatting about whether it was appropriate to use knives and
blades for yukkuris, they stuck a ruler into Marisa's chin. Even
though they couldn't find the mamu-mamu because it's not time to give
birth, they still decided to just ram the ruler into the yukkuri at
the approximate place.

It feels just like an operation.
But they're not planning to be careful like a real operation.

"YUBII!"

A sharp cry.
One of the baby yukkuris probably died.
But they didn't plan to stop. From the beginning, they were not
planning to save lives or some sort of righteous cause like that. The
only thing driving them forward is a plain and pure curiosity.

"Ohhhh! It died, it died!"
"It died!!"

The boys looked at each other and giggled.

From the mamu-mamu, they dragged the ruler down to expand the wound.
Grabbing the two halves of the wound without hesitation, they ripped
Marisa's skin aside.

"Hyuu!"
"Yuuu~ Yuuu~"
"Yu"

Inside there's tiny yukkuris that are smaller than the normal baby
yukkuris. And there's an unexpected amount inside, because there's a
few that "can't talk".

No mouth, there's only eyes and hair. Little yukkuris that keep on
looking around them.
Little yukkuris that keep on saying "Hyuu~" using their toothless
mouths.
There's also little yukkuris that have no eyes or mouth, and just kept
on shaking like they were trying to say something.

Even though they are abnormal yukkuris from anybody's point of view,
this is something that can't be helped. Marisa's belly, from the
outside, doesn't look like she's pregnant. Maybe she was in the early
stages of being pregnant, or maybe it has only been several days since
conception. At this point, the yukkuris in her belly is really small,
and from a life-form point of view they are considered immature. Even
a human baby can't be considered "cute" in the very beginning.

"Ugh..."

Seeing this, the young boy's curiosity sharply declined, but that was
just a temporary effect. The two boys, done with their dissection,
have decided to start on the next game.

"Extermination".

They decided to get rid of the yukkuris that "make them feel grossed
out", just like getting rid of harmful pests and parasites. This is
their justice, and it's also the best way to play with these
yukkuris. These young immature boys mixed the two contradictory
notions together, and started doing the "fun activity" while immersed
in the good feeling of doing something good.

The first target is the yukkuri that "only has eyes". The reason is
simple. It looks the most disgusting, like a natural villain.

The baby yukkuris were confused, and surprised by the sudden air and
brightness from the outside world. So they are quite simple to
catch. The boys aimed the ruler and locked on to the baby yukkuri
that "only has eyes". Not using the flat side of the ruler, but using
the straight edge to slice the baby yukkuri straight through to the
floor.

"...!!!"

Because the baby yukkuri doesn't have a mouth, so it can't let out a
scream that is caused from the savage pain it felt, but its eyes can
express her heart much better than her mouth ever could. The baby
yukkuri's two eyes spun around, looking for the source of the pain,
but the sights eventually stopped while focusing on a certain
direction.

The middle of her body.

Because both eyes were looking towards the middle, it looks like the
baby yukkuri had a severe case of being cross-eyed. The baby yukkuri
stared at the ruler that split it in half, and wordless tears rolled
down its cheeks. One boy reached out and peeled half of the koyukkuri
off the ruler.

The interesting part is, even though the yukkuri is split in half like
this, it seems to be still be able to live for a small amount of
time. The other half of the koyukkuri still on the ruler stared at
its other half, its eyes reddening with tears. On the other hand, the
half that was peeled off the ruler was forced to stare at its own
cross-section, seems like it has received so much shock that it could
barely let loose new tears.

For people this is just a normal manju, but in a yukkuri's conscious
it's probably the equivalent of looking at your own intestines and
innards spilling out.

Looking at the two different reactions from the two different eyes,
the two boys thought that this was extremely amusing. But they heard
some little noises coming from Marisa's corpse, so they immediately
threw out the two things that were stuck to the ruler. The baby
yukkuri was thrown into the grass bush, where dirt and leaves
ruthlessly entered the baby yukkuri's body to cause incomprehensible
pain along with her feeble struggles. She immediately stopped
breathing.

In Marisa's belly that was sliced open, a survival game was being
enacted.

The other yukkuris that witnessed the gruesome death of their sister
slowly jumped out of their mother's belly, and climbed out using their
cheeks. In order to escape the threat that was looming over them,
they struggled with all their might to escape.

The boys caught them.

Dropping their school supplies like their compass or utility knives
towards the koyukkuris, these various objects struck the baby yukkuris
head precisely, nailing them to the floor.

The yukkuri that was pierced through by the compass shook its bottom
as if it was saying "Why can't I move?", but all that brought on her
was extra pain.

"YUGIIIIIIIIII~!!!"

Even though she cried out with a sharp voice while wiggling and
shaking her little body, trying to escape the thing that was pinning
her down... the only result was that she was damaging her own body.
The original wound from the compass got wider and wider until the
wound was much wider than the compass needle itself, and the baby
yukkuri that turned itself into a donut shaped manju died.
Unexpectedly, the boys killed a koyukkuri without doing anything
besides delivering the initial blow. The boys didn't lay another
finger on the baby yukkuri before it died. It was very interesting to
observe because there was no need to do any additional work. Because
until the end, the baby yukkuri was just turning around in circles
with the compass as the middle, ever stretching its wound until it
died from large amounts of filling hemorrhaging from the wound and the
yukkuri's mouth.

Compared to this, the yukkuri that was nailed to the ground by the
utility knife was immediately released from her bondage. Of course,
this was only because the soft yukkuri body was sliced open from the
back. With the back of her body sliced open, of course she can't
continue crawling properly, and the pain immediately won over her
fear. She started rolling on the floor, just dealing with the
incredible pain was enough to drain her mentally. She probably
doesn't even remember what she's trying to escape from right now. Of
course, there's no need to remember anyways, because the “things”
she's afraid of is just smiling while observing the yukkuri anyways.

“DAGE ID EAJJJYYYY~!!!!”

What incredible yukkuris, spinning around while screaming “take it
easy” with her toothless mouth. Maybe this is because these are the
words that has been passed down from her mother since the earliest
days. Starting from this point in time, what could be called
"consciousness" has disappeared from this one, even her actions has
started become a bit weird. Like a robot that keeps on receiving the
same signal, all this baby yukkuri did was contract and twist its body
like a caterpillar. At this point all the filling has leaked out from
the cut in its back, and it's floppy face fell to the floor.

While the boys were observing these two, the faster yukkuris were
already 2-3 feet away. Even still, it's very hard for baby yukkuris
that were just born to go through this rigorous routine. They laid
down there, exhausted.

2-3 feet is an extremely far distance for baby yukkuris that were just
born, but for humans it's just a step or two away. Putting down the
yukkuri with the cut to the back of its body, the young boys walked a
few steps over to where the baby yukkuris were catching their breath.
Looking at the shadow approaching them from behind, the baby yukkuris
tentatively looked up, and of course the young boys were standing over
them.

One baby yukkuri was gently picked up, something was put on its
bottom, and gently put back down. Because it was frightened by this
unexpected event, she was confused. However, she continued her way
forward again. Because she must escape no matter what right now, this
basic survival instinct filled the baby yukkuri's bean paste brain.
Her little head has no room to think about the reason why she was
spared.

Of course, to say she was spared would be a lie. The baby yukkuri has
already lost the ability to move. To elaborate, the ability to move
was taken from the little yukkuri because of the piece of tape on her
feet. She tried to stretch her feet to move, but all she could do was
slide around instead.

For a baby yukkuri who still can't really successfully jump, their
only mobility is through crawling around on the floor. Because the
way yukkuris move has not yet been clearly identified, but it is
definitely because of some sort of frictional force with the floor.
So if the feet has been effectively sealed with tape, it can be very
simple to take away the yukkuri's mobility.

Even though she's not free yet, she should be able to at least move.
The baby yukkuri didn't understand why, and started crying with a
“yuuun” “yuuun” sound. Even though she won't be able to take it easy
if she doesn't escape.

The boy picked up the baby yukkuri again. This time he wasn't so
gentle, and the baby yukkuri spit out a little filling with a
“YUGEEIIII!” sound. The boy reached towards the yukkuri's feet with
his fingernails, and picked up something. Other people can tell with
a glance what this boy wants to do. The only one that doesn't know is
the little yukkuri.

“YUGIIIIIIIII!!?!??”

Fragile.

The feet has already been overused, a result from using an
underdeveloped body to crawl several feet. Stuck with tape, and
then having the tape ripped off. The result was that a giant piece of
the yukkuri's foot was ripped off along with the tape. The thing that
replaced the baby yukkuri's feet on her bottom is a big jagged gash.

Looking at the filling that was dripping down, the boy immediately put
the yukkuri back on the floor. This way they can play with this one
for another little while.

It's not interesting to see the filling bleed out from a wound. It's
more interesting to have them die after crying “yu” “yu” because of
the pain. After taking away four yukkuris' lives, they've come to
think about measures like this. Games require constant change. The
koyukkuris they killed before died too easily.

“YUUUU---!!! YUUU YUUU~!!! YUUUU!!!”

Just like what the boys thought, the koyukkuri suffered while not
being able to leak out filling. The filling in her body is still her
body, and it is also able to feel.

A pain she can feel right in her innards.

She must've thought that in order to escape the pain, she can suffer
just a little bit before finding relief. But, this would not be
allowed.

The little koyukkuri, in order to escape the pain, wanted to turn her
body sideways. This would ensure that she died quickly by letting the
filling leak out, and even now the instinct to escape pain won against
her survival instinct. But at this time, the boy stuck his hand out
to press the baby yukkuri's body to the floor.

Her eyes bulged out, and she started to scream.

Screamed with all the strength left in her body. But because the
vocal abilities were yet undeveloped, this couldn't even startle the
boys. The little baby yukkuri cried, her tears dark with filling.
Her filling touching the gravel directly, the pain circulated her body
like cancer. The yukkuri's body turned hot, her existence a
continuous nightmare. Her eyes continued to leak black tears, and her
eyes were filled with a layer of black. It's probably the equivalent
of blood-shot eyes.

Even the most common way of dying, the throwing up of bean paste, was
prevented with new tape. The yukkuri life-support was perfect.
Biting down hard on her undeveloped teeth, the baby yukkuri stared
furiously into the sky. Even though the boys couldn't tell how angry
she was, but at this moment in time this little yukkuri was indeed
filled with anger.

Why did this happen.
Even though Reimu just wanted to take it easy together with mommy.

Finally, the yukkuri died in the most unfortunate way, leaving the
pain behind. Maybe this way of dying isn't very glamorous to the
boys, but it's the most cruel death. The body's filling crumbled like
sand, and the skin flapped on top.

Death from psychological overload.

Being unable to take it easy under these circumstances, the yukkuri
body itself chose death.

Giving up being a yukkuri, giving up being food.

For a baby yukkuri that was just born, this is indeed an end that is
too cruel. But because death is already right there for these little
ones, there's not really a meaning to this anyway.

The stuff that escaped has all been killed. The only things left are
the little yukkuris that have no eyes, still wandering around the
mother's corpse. No eyes, and some of them don't even have hair.
Looking at this, they're already a completely normal manju.

As a last step, the boys quietly began to pick up their stuff. This
is normal, of course. If there's no mouth nor eyes, there can't
possibly be any sort of interesting reactions either. There's no
value in these toys.
Even though the most they could do was poke at these with an automatic
pencil to look at them shake a little, this is still an unimaginable
horror for these little baby yukkuris.

“....!”
“........!!”

Not being able to see where the pain would be coming from, this is
much more psychologically tiring. Where is it coming from? When is
it coming? How hard will it poke?

With a limited bean paste brain, these little baby yukkuris thought
about these things and started breaking down. A tiny poke would feel
like a savage stab. If the supposed eye sockets get poked they would
roll around on the floor, trying to endure the pain.

Even if they wanted to run away, they're truly shrouded in darkness
with no sense of direction whatsoever. They can't escape even if they
wanted to. Even through that, they still have a stubborn survival
instinct, and they started crawling towards any sort of direction they
can think of. Of course, the speed is extremely slow, the direction
is also a mess. Immediately they would get attacked from behind with
the automatic pencil and get rolled over from the pain. The boys are
satisfied with watching the little round manjus rolling around trying
to escape. Maybe this is more interesting that they thought it would
be.

In comparison to the ones trying to escape, there are also ones that
could do nothing but sit still and shake. The boys understood these
are the kinds that would self-destruct even if they don't do anything
to it. Too sensitive for the automatic pencil, they'd shake violently
even to a light breeze or a little bit of dust. Even if they don't do
anything to it, it's still a little toy worth observing.

Every single one was tortured to death psychologically. Since there's
no eyes nor mouth, it's impossible for them to kill themselves by
throwing up bean paste. In the end, even though all of them just
slowly toppled to the side to never move again, the boys were
extremely satisfied.

Looking at the sky, the sun has already completely set.

Thinking about how they're going to get scolded when they get home,
the boys went their separate ways home.

Oh, so cold so cold.

It's probably going to be really cold tonight.

Want to hurry home tonight to the warm kotatsu.

...
...

At night.

Mother Marisa's hair moved a little.

“Yu”

It's a baby yukkuri. From the looks of her hair, it's a Marisa type
like her mother.

“Yu yu”

Ignoring the savage and cruel treatment to her sisters, she kept
hiding in her mother's hair. Even though she did this, we still can't
just conclude she's a trash because of the lack of empathy.

Aware of her own frailty, the action she took was the most appropriate
in order to preserve her own life.

A concept that's a matter of fact for any sort of animals out there,
but for this yukkuri it's the exhausting conclusion she came to after
working her bean paste brain to its limit.

When her sisters escaped, it's a correct course of action to have only
one hide next to the mother.

Even though Marisa's figure was an abhorrent figure to look at after
the dissection.

Little Marisa found out that mommy's cheeks were still ok, and thus
immediately stuck her own cheeks next to the lifeless ones pointed
towards the sky.

“Mwommie eajy eajy leds dage it eajy togeder'

What a smart little baby Marisa.

These are also little baby Marisa's last words.
