Ex-hostage Betancourt says prayer transformed stay with Colombian rebels
Paris, Jul. 8, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Ingrid Betancourt, the French-born political reformer who was freed from Colombian guerrillas after more than 6 years in captivity, says that constant prayer helped her survive her experience as a hostage.
"If I had not had the Lord at my side, I don't think I would have been able to endure the sorrow" of captivity, Betancourt told the French weekly Pelerin.
Betancourt said that her reliance on the prayer brought about a "transformation in me" during her time under guard by leftist guerillas. She added that she had helped some of her fellow hostages to revivify their own faith through "a constant dialogue with God, through the Gospel."
The former hostage, speaking less than a week after she was liberated by Colombian troops, told Pelerin that captivity can have two very different consequences, provoking either hatred and resentment or a determination to show Christian witness to the captors.
Recalling that her father had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart, Betancourt disclosed that during the month of June-- the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart-- she had asked Christ to let her know when she could expect to be released. At the end of the month, a rebel commander ordered the hostages to pack, saying that he would soon be releasing one of them. The guerilla leader did not know, at that time, that his orders were actually coming from Colombian military officers, who organized a surprise rescue on July 2, liberating Betancourt and 14 other hostages who were being held at the same location.
Betancourt, who had embarked on a political career in Colombia before she was kidnapped, spoke to Pelerin from Paris, where she was visiting relatives after her release.
