Description: Professor Harootunian is Professor Emeritus of History and East Asian Studies at New York University and author of numerous acclaimed books including Overcome by Modernity: History, Culture, and Community in Interwar Japan; History’s Disquiet: Modernity, Cultural Practice, and the Question of Everyday Life; and The Empire’s New Clothes: Paradigm Lost, and Regained. An eminent scholar of early modern and modern Japanese history, Professor Harootunian has engaged with debates in intellectual history and historical theory in general and Marxist thinking in particular. Among many other things, he has written extensively on the issue of modernity; the dimension of time in the cultural production of a community; and the ways temporality comes into play in the disciplinary practice of philosophy of history, area studies, and cultural critique—in brief, the exigency of time that subtends the shaping of identity, the portage of ideology, and the formation of knowledge.
