Dear fiona,
Thanks to supporters in the Mekong region and around the world, over 16,000 people signed the "Save the Mekong" petition - a fantastic response! The petition was successfully presented on June 18th in Bangkok, Thailand, and urges the region's governments to abandon plans to build 11 big dams on the Mekong River's mainstream.
Representatives from the Save the Mekong coalition handed the petition to Thailand's Prime Minister, H.E. Abhisit Vejjajiva, and also delivered a statement asking him to work with the region's leaders to protect the Mekong River and its fisheries, which feed millions of people.
Afterwards, a lively press conference was held. The resulting media coverage successfully broke the news to the wider public.
The Save the Mekong coalition and International Rivers warmly thank all of you who signed the petition and contributed to such a successful event. We hope you will continue to support this critical campaign to keep the majestic Mekong free-flowing.
For the Mekong River,
Carl Middleton
