President Umaru Yaradua is seriously sick. Pericarditis  is a serious, but not necessarily a fatal condition. We should pray for the recovery of President Yaradua. He is a father a husband, an uncle,  as well as Nigeria's president. Given the nature of CSS, the president will have another hospitalization even after this, for CSS is an unremitting chronic multi-systemic condition with remissions and exacerbations. This scenario throws up  the debate about what the president should do in view of his repeated physical incapitation.

As long as he is not incapaciitated mentally and can make decision in rational state, he remains the president. I think its a  grossly  indecent for people to pressurize him to resign. That should be his decision as long as he is conscious and rational . He should be encouraged to think of Nigeria;s national interest (and not any sectional or ethnoreligious interest in his decisions).

Vice-President also Jonathan needs protection and  an outspoken demand that he must be safe, must not drink 'tea" and his physical and mental health must be as before with no sudden surprises !!. The transfer of presidential power is clearly stated in the Nigerian constitution. If and when, the President's position is vacant, the vice-president takes over as the new president. To make such demsands of power transfer  prematurely is tasteless and wicked , and serves our national interest no good. At the same time, Nigeria will not stand for another "anulment" or egregious breach of our constitution, if we plan to remain as one nation.

Subject: [Naijaintellects] "Acute Pericarditis" resulting from Churg-Strauss syndrome:Should Chapter 6 kick in?

What is this 'Acute Pericarditis resulting from Churg-Strauss syndrome? Should Chapter 6 of the constitution kick in? Or are Nigerians just expressing  disgust with the President?

Aso Rocks did good by finally disclosing the nature of the President's illness but still needs to go a step further by reassuring Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm. Why should'nt Nigerians worry? There is this North-South dichotomy and some wonder if there could be a smooth transition should the unexpected happen.
Suppose the unexpected happens and the CJN goes into hiding? Why do I think like this? Nigeria is a country where bizarre thngs always happen. For instance, the senate mace has once disappeared, and a sitting Governor kidnapped by the Police.Till today nobody was fired or tried for that crime.

We have a President from the North, a CJ from the North and a Senate President also from the North.

Even if his doctors think there is no cause for alarm,IMHO Chapter 6 should kick in and in the end if it is found the man is ok,the process should terminate.Call it rehearsal or whatever Nigerians need to know that there is a system that can be activated in case of an emergency or the President should hand over to the VP who should act as President to give him time to undergo thorough treatment and medical care.I just hope Mr President loves himself .

Here is Chapter 6 of the Constitution:

144.
(1) The President or Vice-President shall cease to hold office, if -
(a) by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of all the members of the executive council of the Federation it is declared that the President or Vice-President is incapable of discharging the functions of his office; and
(b) the declaration is verified, after such medical examination as may be necessary, by a medical panel established under subsection (4) of this section in its report to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
(2) Where the medical panel certifies in the report that in its opinion the President or Vice-President is suffering from such infirmity of body or mind as renders him permanently incapable of discharging the functions of his office, a notice thereof signed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall be published in the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation.
(3) The President or Vice-President shall cease to hold office as from the date of publication of the notice of the medical report pursuant to subsection (2) of this section.
(4) the medical panel to which this section relates shall be appointed by the President of the Senate, and shall comprise five medical practitioners in Nigeria:-
(a) one of whom shall be the personal physician of the holder of the office concerned; and
(b) four other medical practitioners who have, in the opinion of the President of the Senate, attained a high degree of eminence in the field of medicine relative to the nature of the examination to be conducted in accordance with the foregoing provisions.
(5) In this section, the reference to "executive council of the Federation" is a reference to the body of Ministers of the Government of the Federation, howsoever called, established by the President and charged with such responsibilities for the functions of government as the President may direct.
