annual conference. Submission Deadline is August
1, 2008.

Nalle Centennial Professorship in History
University of Texas - Austin

Conference Theme Statement: African societies and
nations have experienced various events, both
historical and contemporary, that have created
common ground across cultures and geo-political
boundaries.  The Mid-American Alliance for
African Studies has chosen to explore the causes
and consequences of ties that bind throughout
Africa in its 2008 meeting in St Louis, Missouri.
What are the issues, commonalities, conditions
that unite people across culture, nationality,
religion, language, etc. within the African
context? How have these ties been used to effect
change within and outside the continent? Scholars
and practitioners from all disciplines are
invited to share their ideas and projects related
to "Ties that Bind: Uniting Africans" in a
collegial setting.  Possible themes include the
following, although other topics are welcomed:

… Roots and results of African unity organizations
… The African Diaspora: Connections
… Economic Regional movements and organizations
… Women's organizations and movements for unity
… Education's role in uniting Africa
… Cross-cultural collaborations and organizations
… Artistic representation of African unity
… African social and political organizations to unite
… Religious movements that unite
