Anyone found a good replacement for Yojimbo?

First let me say that I have absolutely no desire to give up Yojimbo, I LOVE IT.  I do have evernote but it is not the same tool.  

However, with that said - I NEED syncing.  The dropbox thing does not work for me as I typically have yojimbo running on several machines at once (I move between machines - 4 on my desk teleportd is awesome)   I push data into yojimbo at a good rate.   Given all of that - I was patiently waiting for the June 30 release happily using MobileMe.   Well, MobileMe is no more.   I need a solution that works.   ------->  Has anyone found one?  <---------

I apologize if this sounds negative, that is not my intent.  My intent is to find a workable solution to an unfortunate situation.

iCloud sync is the replacement for MobileMe sync. We're working on it.

Then don't. Be patient. There is no replacement for Yojimbo except
for a newer version of Yojimbo.

Bare Bones has said, in every patient way possible, that they are
working on it. They are powered by humans, not code producing robots.

Good things take time. Great creators appreciate patient patrons.

I still use Yojimbo and look forward to the new version, but in the meantime, I've been using a combination of nvALT and Notesy, which is an IOS app that uses Dropbox to store the files. It's only for plain text notes, but it works quite well. nvALT is free, and Notesy is just $5

I understand that and I have been awaiting the replacement,  If you check your records you will find that I was one of your very first customers, however this does not help us now.  A realistic ETA would be helpful, but I do understand your reluctance to have "pie face" again.

I use some apps in addition to Yojimbo. Yojimbo is my big pile of data. For more structured information I use other programs.

1) 1Password for passwords, but I could also use it for holding account information and secure notes. It syncs via DropBox.

2) MacJournal. A good way to hold organized data. Various security options, I see it has a word processor that holds documents internally. I use it for keeping notes that I need to keep organized by date (just like a journal) but I could make use of its features for status, priority, taqgs, etc. I sync via my SpiderOak between my Macs (could use DropBox) but need to do syncing via WiFi for the iPad version. The iPad version stores text but lacks all of the options of the desktop version.

I believe that the best choice for this type of program depends on what you want to do and your personality.

I use(d) Yojimbo mostly for serial numbers and license files; I use 1Password for passwords and, as has been mentioned, it sync via Dropbox. While googling around, I came across this post (http://forum.agilebits.com/index.php?/topic/1208-yojimbo-importer/) which contains an Automator action to help with importing Yojimbo logins, software/serials and notes. Since 1Password doesn't support other types, they can't be imported.

I find that Notational Velocity is a good app for text notes. I sync it with Simplenote, which means I also get iOS access, and it syncs on a record level rather than with a whole database, and can do so over Dropbox. NV also has a nice interface for quick entry and searching of notes (better, if I may say, than Yojimbo's, though Y does do much more than that as well).

Alternatively, just having Dropbox or another syncing app and having a directory to put random items in does work. For tagging, you could use, say, Punakea, which adds metadata to the file itself. Again, not a full replacement, but a practical one.

At the risk of going too far off-topic, let me sound a note of caution on nvALT (and other similar applications that work with Simplenote): when you have a large number of notes, the combined search/create interface causes problems (though this may not be true with the latest Macs with lots of RAM and an SSD). It often happens that I start typing a title with the intention of creating a new note, but nvALT starts searching through all my notes as soon as I've typed a couple of characters, preventing the other characters I've typed from being input properly. If I start retyping them, though, nvALT will sometimes partially catch up to my previous input, leading to an unpredictable number of duplicated characters in the note's title. Although John Gruber and many others sing the praises of the app, I think the decision to combine Creation and Search was a bad one. For comparison, you may want to recall the early days of Spotlight or searching in iPhoto or Mail.

In addition, I've found the sync to be unreliable, regularly deleting portions of my notes when I sync between Simplenote on my iPad and nvALT on my Mac. The developer is very sympathetic, but there doesn't seem to be any way for him to investigate individual cases. To be fair to Simplenote, it doesn't sound as if these problems are very common, but they're also not exactly unknown: Merlin Mann has occasionally mentioned loss of data in his podcasts, and Michael Schechter wrote in May about a similar issue:

I've been using Instapaper more & more as a hold-everything text location: emailing stuff to it, or saving via bookmarklet. Having to write something, I've been using dropbox & notesy (iOS) and WriteRoom (OSX). I still can't pull the trigger on ditching Yojimbo, no matter what. I'm using Evernote reluctantly, trying to figure out how to get out of it in the future.

Hi Rhet and Phil,

I too am ready to move on, I haven't heard anything in the last year that helps to truly understand what is holding BB back. It is really sad if it is Apple but I have little doubt that it could be .... I've been thru the full dotMac/MobileMe/iCloud and more with Apple and each time it has been "OK" at best but troublesome in transition. I didn't upgrade to Lion on my Yojimbo machines for almost a full year and that was OK but at MobileMe shutdown and no Yojimbo.... that was a really problem and it is time to move on.

I would like to hear more about your experiences.... $60 is fine for me.....

Sadly, I am a big Yojimbo fan but needing the sync, I just switched the new Evernote and it appears to be just fine.  Do I still like Yojimbo better?  Yes.  For example, I had trouble merging two notes into one the right way and then could not undue.  But it works well enough and with much sadness, I gave up waiting.  I wish them the best though and might still be convinced to switch back if it is soon.  But meantime I would love a copy of the script you developed Rhet.

+1 A script would be great. Perhaps you/we ( a community of Yo'users ) could put it in GIT and keep improving it for the benefit of others ....

On a slight aside: does anyone know what the sync/storage mechanism(s) of LastPass and Evernote are? Is/are they based on open source code in whole or part? Anyone? Perhaps there is a way to generalize or move the Yojimbo app to "thync differently" - i.e. different storage mechanisms.... AWS, Google, private server... I'm thinking that BB is hung up on the cost of storage rather than the actual sync mechanism.... just a guess....

My main beef with Evernote is the lock-in.  The only export formats are proprietary (.ENEX) or HTML.  And if you suck a PDF into Evernote, and then export, it changes the name and the file attributes (i.e. created date, modified date, etc.).  Yojimbo doesn't do this.  There are some scripts that will let you export in other formats (i.e. to RTF; I don't recall whether they save date info.  I think they do, but unsure if there's a way to do that for PDFs etc).

I'm certainly starting to investigate other options as the movement on Yojimbo is too slow for me to feel comfortable, and there's a lot of activity and interesting things on the Evernote side of the fence.

Both LastPass and Evernote use their own servers. This is especially important in the case of LastPass due to security issues. 

I notice that 1Password is promising iCloud syncing with 1Password 4, which is due out real soon now. Version 4 will also support DropBox. We will see how quickly version 4 is released. I assume that they face similar challenges as Yojimbo. I will let others test out 1Password 4 before I upgrade.

I am still holding on to Yojimbo. I use it for stuff I'd like to remember but probably won't. 

Ease of adding information with the drop drawer, the tag navigator, format flexibility, and spotlight support keep me hooked on Yojimbo. 

I also can have a copy stashed on my iPad for reference when I'm out and about. 

I have moved important confidential information, serials and passwords to 1Password, for the usual reasons, including random password generation.

Beyond that, I have been using Evernote for meeting notes, because together with Placeme (a neato GPS location recorder on the iPhone), it helps me to keep straight what I did where and what was discussed where. 

What I'm fiddling with now is "SendtoDropbox" which allows you to email an item to a folder in your dropbox. I'd like to get a folder action to send anything in that folder to Yojimbo, but I can't figure out how to get it to work. The scripts compile correctly, and when I test the automator folder action, the script shows up in the screen, but I don't get any importing. Nor can I open the Yojimbo library within applescript. Am I missing something obvious, such as "yojimbo dropped applescript support"?
