Is it safe to sync the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/Yojimbo using a utility like ChronoSync? I'm thinking of running such a sync between my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro before I take my MacBook Pro to work and after I bring it home each day. At home I use Yojimbo on the Mac Pro instead of the MacBook Pro.

Yes, with this necessary provision: Yojimbo must not be running on either
machine when you do so.

Bill,.
Keep in mind that this will not sync in the same way MobileMe does.
If you change entries on both Macbook and Mac Pro Chronosync will give
you a conflict -- you'll have to pick which database to use. Yojimbo
stores all its data in a monolithic database file so this method won't
allow item by item syncing.

Yes, I understand this. My Chronosync solution will be a temporary stopgap until Yojimbo is updated to sync with iCloud. I'm not willing to defer my switch to iCloud just for Yojimbo, and I'm not willing to give up Yojimbo, so I'll just have to live with this restriction.

I pointed out this problem from the audience at a Macworld Expo session many years ago when a Microsoft speaker proudly introduced the first version of Entourage and touted its monolithic database as a plus. Didn't Entourage finally break up its email database to permit incremental backups and the like? Maybe Yojimbo could take that approach, too, although I guess it is stuck with whatever Apple's Core Data API allows (I haven't watched the 2011 WWDC Core Data video yet).

Personally, if I were in your shoes, instead of using ChronoSync
(which I love and own a license for), I would use DropBox as the
repository for the yojimbo database.

And you can use a free LogMeIn.com account to gain access to one of
your computers and quit yojimbo, should you forget to close the app on
one of the systems before leaving it.

What a good idea! I use Dropbox for exchanging family photos, but I haven't gotten around to putting real data on it. I'll give it a try.

Now all I have to do is remember how to move the Yojimbo database to a non-standard location. And of course I'll have to review how carefully I've encrypted data that is private.

That was easy, and the Dropbox solution is working nicely.

I moved the Yojimbo folder from ~/Library/Application Support to ~/Documents/Dropbox/Private, and it promptly synced to my other Mac's local Dropbox folder. Then I used Path Finder to create a symbolic link to the Yojimbo folder in the new Dropbox location on each of my Macs, and I moved each link back to the ~/Library/Application Support folder on its Mac and renamed it "Yojimbo".

Now I only have to remember to use Yojimbo on one Mac at a time, and not to use it on the other Mac until both machines have been on the Internet so the updated database in the Dropbox folder could sync to the other machine.

For this I quit Yojimbo automatically on my home Mac every morning at 6 with a cron job.

Use SpiderOak instead of DropBox (free account with 2GB, when
friends signup you get more free storage):

<https://spideroak.com/download/referral/91a14f386f00488aea7c9acf6ad872b4>

It does much of what DropBox does, but only better.

I haven't used it for synching Yojimbo data, but it should work
just fine (ensuring Yojimbo is quit, etc).

There is a long list of good features with SpiderOak, but to
follow-on from your comment about encrypting data; the SpiderOak
security is fantastic. Put simply, your key (password) is never
sent to SpiderOak servers, and all data is encrypted before it
leaves your computer. So even a court order couldn't force
SpiderOak to reveal your data; your data is encrypted and
secure. (DropBox has already shown that user's data is vulnerable.)

You could also set up a folder action script on your Mac at home that
shuts down Yojimbo whenever a file is dropped into a specific folder
in your Dropbox from anywhere. Of course, that implies that your Mac
at home will always be running but if it's not then it doesn't really
matter does it?
