Moderate temperatures, overcast skies, and, finally, rain! Autumn's finally falling in Central Texas, haulin' a cargo of costumed merriment, cyclocross races, and perfect weather for a nice, long ride right behind. Conditions couldn't be more ideal to hit the road or the trail, or to swing by your favorite no-longer-sweltering community bike shop. We've got some especially steady hours right now, opening our doors each and every weeknight, offering open shops, volunteer-only shops, and the triumphant return of Lady Bike. Plus, if the frightful freak-out at the end of the month just isn't enough holiday for you, read on to learn why Saturday the 22nd might be the most memorable day of your October.
EVENTS
Tour de Fat - The 2011 New Belgium Tour de Fat
approacheth! If you've never had the pleasure, the TdF is a rollicking
bikestravaganza for young and old, including hilarious performances,
great music, and lots of weird bikes for everyone to ride. TdF travels
the country raising funds for bike-related non-profits in 13 different
cities each summer (YBP, Austin Cycing Association, and Austin Ridge Riders, in our case). This year's Austin stop is on Saturday, October 22nd, so it's sure to be quite a costume party, as well. Put on your weirdest threads and ride your weirdest bike!
Once again, YBP is looking for for volunteers to help New Belgium make it happen. We're especially in need of help with distributing posters around town over the next month. Volunteering is a great way to take in the excitement, get some free beers, and meet some cool folks. If you'd like to help out, fill out this form and we'll get back to you real soon about scheduling.
And of course with the TdF comes the always exciting, always inspiring CAR/BIKE TRADE. Is that smelly, expensive death trap burning a hole in your lifesource? Do you want less speed and more time in your day? Ready to make the effortless leap to a car-free or car-lite lifestyle, and only waiting for a little push in the form of a marching-band-backed neo-revival-style exorcism/funeral/resurrection? Viva la Vida Fest - Once Tour de Fat has whetted your appetite for creatively costumed cavalcades, head on over to 5th and Congress to help us dress up some Yellow Bikes for Viva la Vida Fest, Mexic-Arte Museum's 28th Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration! YBP will be on hand beginning at 2pm to prepare for the Grand Procession, when our back-from-the-dead bikes will join Fridas, free-tailed bats, and skeletons of all sorts at Plaza Saltillo (E. 5th and Comal) for the big parade down 6th Street. Along with velo-art, there'll be plenty of family-friendly activities, augmented by delicious food, beautiful altars, and live performances outside Mexic-Arte. Clear your calendar on Saturday, October 22nd, because we've got your good times covered all day long!
COMMUNITY
Austin Mural Project - A trio of local artists stopped by the shop to spread the word about a really neat project they're looking to get off the ground. The Austin Mural Project aims to beautify and bring together our city through visual works that represent our communities. Their first undertaking is going to be a series of mobile murals, which will be displayed in the neighborhoods of their creation, and then rotated from place to place to engage our diverse clans in some colorful dialogue. If you're handy with paintbrushes, know someone who is, or would like to contribute supplies, drop a line to AustinMur...@gmail.com.

Lady Bike - At long last, by popular demand, Lady Bike returns! Self identified women and trans, come on down to 12th and Webberville, every Wednesday, 6-9pm for an evening of all the mechanics with none of the machismo. Fix up your own bike or learn the ropes by volunteering on some of ours and flip the male-dominated status quo on its head.

Volunteer-Only Shops - Volunteer-Only Shops keep on keepin' on this month, as we devote every Thursday night, 6-10pm
to reviving Yellow Bikes for release at Viva la Vida Fest. The more
volunteers we have, the more free-to-ride-but-not-to-keepers will parade
off into the public domain, so come lend a hand. If you can't
make it on Thursday nights, or if one night a week of wrenching for the
community just isn't enough grease to slake your fingernails, don't
forget that volunteers are always more than welcome at Open Shops, too.
Easy Ways to Help Improve the Shop - Want to help make YBP the best community bike shop it can be? Take a few minutes at each shop to help us keep it in ship-shape. Wiping down workstands and sweeping floors is quick and easy if everyone pitches in, and makes for a much better place to fix stuff up in. Sorting small parts and components not only makes them easier for everybody to find, but will introduce you to lots of little bits and pieces you may have never noticed your ride needs to stay in one piece. Just think, if everybody leaves the shop better than they find it, we'll always have the best shop we've ever had!
Public Input at Collective Meetings
- Collective meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at our
Webberville headquarters from 7-9pm. Open to the public, they're a
great place to learn how YBP and collective decision making work. For
members of the general populous coming to make a request of or an offer
to the collective, please be aware that the Public Input portion of our meeting is at 8pm.
You may stay for as much or as little of the meeting as you like. Our
agendas tend to be pretty jam-packed, so please be prepared with a
well-defined proposal - public input is limited to five minutes per
