Holidays gotcha hung up on the perfect gift for your favorite person? After-dark rush hours and overstuffed parking lots leaving you wondering if you’ll have pulled out all your hair before the new year? Either way, we may very well have the solution. Whether you’re after something to put under the tree or to put between your legs, come check out Yellow Bike’s selection of ready-to-ride bikes. A steady flow of fantastic volunteers and fabulous donations has resulted in our most robust sale rack in months. Whether it’s a reliable commuter priced to get you back in the saddle, some aluminum with aero-bars for the triathlete in your life, or a totally tricked-out trail slayer sure to have that MTB geek kissing you under the mistletoe, we’ve got a little something for every cyclist. All these beautiful bicycles won’t be around for long though, so stop by the shop as soon as you can to give ‘em a gander - and stick around to help us fix up even more!

Bikes Across Borders - Our friends at Bikes Across Borders have a unique approach to donating bicycles internationally. Not only do volunteers refurbish rides for redistribution in Mexico - they pedal them there themselves! Bikes Across Borders is gearing up for another journey to Piedras Negras in January, and they’re holding two events for anyone interested in joining them. Join BXB for a Meet & Eat dinner on Thursday, December 15, 6:30pm, at Dirtnail Pedicab (1508 E. 4th St.) to chow down and learn more about humanitarian cyclotouring. Sound like a blast, but worried your messenger bag might not suffice for carrying a week’s worth of supplies? Head over to Dirtnail again for a DIY Pannier Workshop on Tuesday, December 20 at 7pm. (Don’t forget to swing by Ecology Action at 9th I-35 on the way to snag a kitty litter bucket or two.) For further info, contact Josh at collier_...@yahoo.ie.
Ride for Refuge - This one’s a couple months down the road, but that hasn’t stopped us from beginning to assemble our team. Austin’s Ride for Refuge takes place Saturday, February 11. Featuring both 38- and 10-mile routes, cyclists of all skill levels can register, ride, and raise funds for Refugee Services of Texas - Austin. Get some friends or co-workers together, form a team, and spin those pedals for a great cause!
COMMUNITY/ADVOCACY
HONK!TX 2012 - YBP was thrilled to lend transportation support to last year’s inaugural HONK!TX community street band festival. If you missed out on the fun, HONK!TX brings together amazing marching bands from all over the country, playing music that runs a gamut of styles from New Orleans second-line to klezmer to Afro-Brazilian and beyond. The hyper-kinetic, family-friendly performances are all absolutely free, taking place in streets and parks all over the city. Sound like a blast? It certainly will be - and you can help make it happen. Visit HONK!TX's Kickstarter page to lend your support.
Austin Mural Project - Don’t forget to lend your creative vision to the Austin Mural Project Idea Box, located by the sign-in computer at the shop. AMP and YBP volunteers will collaborate to make mobile community art out of your input! The Mural Project is also seeking material support, as well as talented artists interested in trying to translate a box full of ideas to canvas - contact them at AustinMur...@gmail.com if you'd like to help.
Bike Lane Blitz - Noticed some changes out on the pavement recently? It’s quite likely you have, since the City of Austin has striped over 35 miles of fresh bike lanes this year. We’d like to tip our caps to both the hardworking staff of the CoA Bicycle Program and the diligent advocates at the League of Bicycling Voters for facilitating so much expansion that a second edition of the 2011 Bicycle Map has been released! No one’s resting on their laurels, though, and as work continues on upcoming renovations including the MoPac Improvement Project, Southern Walnut Creek Trail, and many more upgrades to bike infrastructure (including parking-free lanes right here on Webberville), it’s critical that cyclists continue to make their voices heard. Visit lobv.org to stay on top of all the latest and consider joining or making a donation to support their much needed work.

Condolences and Gratitude - We were saddened by the recent news that Paolo Minissi, founder, owner, and manager of Castle Hill Fitness and YBP supporter, had passed away. We are deeply moved by the Minissi and Castle Hill families’ request that memorial contributions be made to YBP in lieu of flowers. It’s impossible to articulate what it means for people to think of us during such a difficult time - thank you.
Shop Closures for the Holidays - YBP will be closed Saturday, December 24th through Sunday, January 1st. Happy midwinter-break wishes to all! We’ll look forward to seeing you again at our Open Shops on Monday, January 2nd, and our next Collective Meeting on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Volunteer-Only Shops - Thursday night keeps holdin' it down as our extra-awesome Volunteer-Only Shop month after month. Whether you're coming in to get closer to earning that bike, complete your community service hours, or simply learn more about our favorite machines while helping to make some work again, Thursday nights are the special spot just for you. This month, we’ll be focusing our volunteer efforts on cranking out as many child-sized rides as we can to make the kids extra-merry. Of course, volunteers are always wanted and welcome at our Open Shops, as well.
Apprentice Workbook - One of the things that make being a Coordinator so rewarding is seeing other folks get as excited as we are about greasy fingernails. Enthusiasm is what keeps an all-volunteer shop doin’ its thing - which is why we’re pleased to introduce our new Apprentice Workbook, a handy guide to becoming a Coordinator, too! Whether it's your first time at Webberville or you already know everyone by name, if you’re interested in taking the next step as a YBP volunteer, check it out!
Easy Ways to Help Improve the Shop - Want to help make YBP the best community bike shop it can be? Take a few minutes at each shop to help us keep it in ship-shape. Wiping down workstands and sweeping floors is quick and easy if everyone pitches in, and makes for a much better place to fix stuff up in. Sorting small parts and components not only makes them easier for everybody to find, but will introduce you to lots of little bits you may have never noticed keeping your ride in one piece. Just think, if everybody leaves the shop better than they find it, we'll always have the best shop we've ever had!
Public Input at Collective Meetings - Collective Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at our Webberville headquarters from 7-9pm. Open to the public, they're a great place to learn how YBP and collective decision making work. For members of the general populous coming to make a request of or an offer to the collective, please be aware that the Public Input portion of our meeting is at 8pm. You may stay for as much or as little of the meeting as you like. Our agendas tend to be pretty jam-packed, so please be prepared with a well-defined proposal - public input is limited to five minutes per item.
