[YAFSTL] AIASTL Chapter Meeting (Priory Chapel Building Tour)

Join YAFSTL as we drop in AIASTL’s April Chapter meeting today at the The St. Louis Abbey, also known as the Priory Chapel. 

Please note that the program will begin at 5:30 pm, with the reception to follow (a reverse of our usual order of events).   We suggest that you budget your time to arrive a bit before 5:30 pm if possible.

For this special meeting, the monks of the Abbey have invited us to join them in their 50^th anniversary celebration of the chapel designed by Gyo Obata, FAIA of HOK, Inc.  

In addition to hearing the history of the building from Fr. Timothy and Fr. Gregory,  Gyo Obata, FAIA of HOK, Inc. will provide his insights and Andrew Raimist, AIA will present information on the architecture of centrally-planned churches.   To demonstrate the building’s acoustics, the monks will chant at the conclusion of the one hour program, and we will then proceed to the monastery for a reception.  All welcome.

Designed for a community of Benedictine monks, this remarkable monastic church both transcends time and is transformational.  The clarity and simplicity of the plan and structure yields a unified, uncluttered, serene place for worship which has remained mostly unchanged for its nearly 50 years of service.  The design achieves a balance and synergy between monasticism and modernity. The elegance of structure, simplicity of materials, soft quality of natural light, acoustics for singing and chanting, and central focus of the altar contribute to the theological heart of worship, whether in community or quiet contemplation.
