Kazz pianists Bud Powell and Denny Zeitlin

Bud Powell, brilliantly innovative jazz pianist, was
first hospitalized in 1945 after being beaten by
police when he came to the aid of his mentor,
Thelonius Monk. The episode appears to have marked the
beginning of the deterioration in his mental health,
and in the early fifties he received electroshock
therapy numerous times. Still, he maintained his art
and continued to perform.

Powell lived in Europe from 1959 - 1964. He recorded
in Sweden in 1962.

(All jazz musicians will know of Powell. Coltrane
performed with Monk in the late fifties.)
