The render region was so quick to work with. There’s one in Houdini but not as handy as XSI’s one. And in Maya it is still lacking.

I have been giving Houdini a spin lately (still use Softimage primarily) and yes it is nice to have the render region for isolated stuff, for previews I still prefer Softimage (with Redshift) as I feel for the version number it ended on (3.x) it gives pretty solid interaction, where Houdini's preview just doesn't always update results.

Yes, redshift is still nice to work with in its latest version for xsi. Arnold does have some issues regarding the render region. Sometimes you have to scrub a frame back and forth to have it update correctly.

Probably because redshift wasn’t bought by AD.
