Hey list,

I just thought I'd see if anyone here could help me before I report this as a bug.

We have recently switched our workstations over from Kubuntu to Fedora linux. Thing seem to be more stable, but I've discovered that I am unable to create script buttons (or any other toolbar widgets) by dragging and dropping anymore. I find it odd that this worked on an unsupported OS but it does not on the officially supported one. I can remove things but I can't create them using the UI.

Is this a known issue? Does anyone know of a good workaround? Or do I have to go and manually edit my .xsitb file every time I make a new tool?

Thanks

No it just doesn't let me drop anything in. When I try to drag in some text or a toolbar widget, or try to move one, it gives me the little cancel cursor and it doesn't do anything. When I drag it over a PPG it seems to think I can drop it there though but that obviously doesn't do anything usefull.

I think I'll just add to the .xsitb and replace all quotes with &quot like it seems to want me to.
How do I report bugs to softimage anyways? I've never used a supported OS before so I've never tried reporting anything officially.

Thanks,
Duncan

Try and delete your .mw folder and see if that has anything to do with it.

rm -rf $HOME/.mw

how did you install Softimage? lot's of users comming from ubuntu/debian usually install things using sudo, which is not a good idea with Softimage.

as a reminder (I'm pretty sure you know all this Duncan, just as a reminder for others)

1.) install as root with all it's permissions (type 'su -' in a terminal)
2.) use a C Shell when unpacking and installing (type 'tsch' or 'csh' in a terminal)

ex or commands in order
su -
csh
tar xvf softimagefiletounpack.tar.gz
/pathtounpackedfiles/setup

anyhow, I hope you solve it.

Hey Stefan,

I tried deleting that folder but it didn't help me. I'm don't think it even existed in the first place. Maybe that's what's wrong?

Actually I didn't know any of that. I'm not a very experienced linux user. I didn't install Softimage here. Our IT guy Deon sorted that out. I'm not sure what method he used. I'll ask him.

Cheers

Hi,
i just did a Fedora12 testinstall three days ago and experience the same problem as Duncan. Additional to the script buttons some of my keyboard-shortcuts don't work. I have mapped the viewport-views blenderstyle to the numpad, but "perspective view" and "cameras" arent working anymore.
Perspective view does nothing, and cameras is toggling the camera visibility....
I tried Stefan's suggestions, but to no success.
Btw...who is providing us with these precious linux-tricks when you move to windows Stefan??

cheers,
Thomas

that's strange. I just tested to map

1. top view
2. front view
3. right view
4. left view
5. perspective view

And it works just fine, and I'm using FedoraCore 12

Next question, are you guys using Gnome or KDE? (or any other). I'm using Gnome.

We haven't made a decision yet, for now we are still a Linux shop, and I'm not sure we are switching. :)

strange indeed... i just tested under Gnome (fluxbox is default), but still not working :(
Unmet dependencies or some upgrades i shouldn't have made? Wasn't there a dependency-list some SI-versions ago? aarrrggh....
Well, no showstoppers anyway, as long as i don't run into some other surprises.

Thomas

We are using KDE. I spoke to out IT Admin and he says he installed soft the way that you suggested.

I'm not getting the shortcuts thing that Thomas is getting though. Just this script button thing. There's other bugs too obviously. Another annoying one is that when I exit layout editing softimage crashes. I can deal with that though because it saves the layout before crashing.

Not really sure, we don't update our machines very much after they are up and running. Perhaps it has something to do with the keyboard layout? I'm using a US layout.

try and type

setxkbmap us

then start softimage and see if that helps.

Hello Duncan,
I remember a bug with script buttons ages ago. That time if you used
>save< for toolbar it didn't save, or wasn't loaded next time like edited
toolbar was. Workaround was to use always save as. This doesn't help if
you can't create them at all. I don't have current version of SI to test
now. Won't it give you contextual menu while right click on toolbar? This
way you would be able to fill in the button with a script.

It seems that i am not able to assign any command to numpad-5, no matter which key-layout. If i map perspective-view to numpad-2 it works just fine.... very strange, but a workaround which leaves only the scriptbutton problem.

Thomas

It gives me a contextual menu fine. I click "Customize Toolbar" and it gives me the menu with the widgets. I just can't drag and drop the widgets into any toolbar. I tried with all sorts of toolbars, like the built in ones,, and floating ones, and custom ones in my layout. I can't drag text into a toolbar either. I can, however, remove buttons and when I click save it saves the toolbar ok.

I worked out how to just edit the .xsitb files now so I guess I'll just do that.

Thanks

Hey Thomas,

Do you get a crash when you try to exit layout editing?
When we were using Ubuntu it crashed just for trying to edit a layout, so this is a bit better, but still not cool.

We had the problem too, but this was on 7.01, and it was patched by a QFE, and then included in 2010 and on I believe.
Is it possible you are just experiencing severe lag? That can still happen even in 2011 actually, where you drag and drop and it will take up to 10 seconds or so before it actually changes the mouse over icon and lets you do it.

Unresponding shortcuts I haven't seen though. Some not working by default yes, but they did after a reassign. That would drive me homicidal if it happened, I probably have 40 or 50 additional shortcuts in a keymap I've been using for ages now, if I couldn't use it I'd most likely snap and move to MAX.

What version of Soft are you on btw?

I tried waiting for 60 seconds holding text and a widget over the
toolbar to no avail. Using Softimage 2010 SP1 and 2011 SP1. I wonder if
there is a script command that I can run to create a button? I couldn't
find anything for it in the documentation. That might be a bit easier to
do than editing .xsitb files. Then I can create a little template script
to make all my buttons :)

Thanks Raff,

Duncan

AFAIK the whole toolbar customization stuff can't be driven by commands as it's UI context sensitive, the only way to automate it is to automate the writing of those files and reloading the toolbar.
I'd love to be proven wrong though if somebody knows of some undocumented, sneaky backdoor access to toolbars

Well that's not a bad idea. I've been playing around with text creation lately. I can make a command that I give the path for a .xsitb file, and strings with the label, tooltip, and script, swap out all quotes with """ and append all that to the .xsitb file. Maybe I can even make it into a button that brings up a PPG for me to insert the parameters into. I like it. It will be good practice. :D

Hi and a happy new year,
has anybody solved the buttons-problem in Fedora13 by now? I'm digging
into this, because it seems i can't get custom spdls working either.
The problem seems to be mainwins rpcss not running:

RPCSS ServiceMain failed with 1702 (000006a6)
The binding handle is invalid.

As there are people running FC13 without this problem i would like to
know how to achieve that....
To reproduce:

tcsh
source
/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011_Subscription_Advantage_Pack/.xsi_2011_Subscription_Advantage_Pack
/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011_Subscription_Advantage_Pack/Application/mainwin/mw/bin-amd64_linux_optimized/rpcss

-> Error

The same also with SI2010_SP1. This error doesn't show up on my old
sabayon4 system (and i am able to create buttons there).
Any ideas, suggestions, hints, etc.?

Thx,
Thomas

Got it!
Networkmanager is adding a line to /etc/hosts ....delete it or make it a
comment and everything runs as it should.
First line should start with 127.0.0.1 .....

cheers,
