Hi all,

I finally upgraded my macbook pro with a bigger hard drive and can now consider running Win7, Softimage and MAX.

I’m wondering if I should install Bootcamp or Parallel.

I understand the difference between both but I’m wondering what really is the impact of using Parallel compared to Bootcamp.

Be it speed wise, interaction wise, viewport redraw etc…

Anybody got some experience in that area?

Thanks in advance for any advice, tricks and whatnot!

I've used Softimage 7 with Bootcamp with no problems whatsoever. Really runs great. I never tried Parallel, fearing significant decrease in resources running two operating systems. Rebooting wasn't a big deal for me, though.

BootCamp without question. Though OSX native Softimage would bring a smile to my face!

No harm in having both.

ive used both.......bootcamp "feels more solid", and utilizes ram (as i understand it) more efficiently.
really THE most significant reason i chose parallels, is that i wanted to be able to move over to the mac side to use the other products i have for mac. i have yet to do so.

parallels initially had great restrictions on the amount of ram you could apply to the windows side.....that issue has largely been resolved. i do find that it is bothersome as you have a  host of quick keys and combos you'll have to remember when using parallels to go back and forth, double click in the wrong place and you're no longer in full screen mode, click in the wrong window....oops, your in mac os. small but annoying issues

i've had a chance recently to run bootcamp on power macs, and find them rock solid and behave essentially identical to the hp systems i have at home......some would argue that the macs do a better job of handling video. i cant speak to that.

System memory will be the biggest aspect hit. Personally I wouldn't even consider Parallels or VMWare if you have less than 8gb mem. 4 is pushing it too much. You'll be out of memory just from running OSX, Win7 and Softimage/Max.

Dual boot (bootcamp) is solid.

Strangely enough, the Mac handles UDK better than my HP laptop. Probably because the Mac has a "game" video card, while the HP has an "workstation class" Nvidia.

Well thanks all. Bootcamp it’ll be I guess! I’ll try, see how I like it. ;)

Even Thiago switched to Bootcamp! LOL!

Again, thank you

Parallels is able to run the bootcamp partition, 8gb of ram is necessary though. I use parallels for everything but rendering and xsi runs like a charm.

Another option would be to go with http://www.virtualbox.org/

I found Parallels by far the best virtualisation solution for osx workstations, though there's a free open source edition of virtualbox.

true, it's a hog. I'm sitting at a macbook now with parallels running just Onenote. On the OS X side is Chrome, a mail client and a text editor. I'm looking at 6.3 gb used. It's not usually that bad for so little running but chuck Photoshop and Lightroom in there and you don't get much change out of 8gb.

Never tried it with XSI.
