Hey guys,
Something interesting one of my students has bumped into.
"Python" apparently isn't a valid language choice anymore when setting a PPGLayout.Language property anymore, and what's worse is that it will fall back to VBS silently, not to mention differ from the option if you have non vanilla python and pywin installed.

I imagine this is new to 2011 and the bundled Py.
Anybody knows what it's been changed to, if anything? No amount of scouring the various win32com modules or introspection of the environment got me anything working.

Try "XSI.SIPython"

Is this on a machine that has never had Python and pywin installed (outside of Softimage) ?

Yep, on my end yes. It's a boot with just the minimum vanilla environment possible to run my workshop.
I'm suspecting it's tied to registry or registration issues... most odd

Hi

I had the same problem when I got a brand new machine.
Only after I installed Python and pywin did the problem go away.
After that, I could remove Python and pywin, and the problem would not re-occur.

we encountered the same issues a couple of days ago on machines that had only
the python installed that comes bundled with softimage. a proper python/pywin
install fixed the problems, even when preferences are still set to use soft's
own python.

I had a similiar problem while testing Eric's Animstore plugin.

Installing Python and pywin & making sure pyrhon path exists in
registry fixed it for me.
I had not installed python externally before.
Cheers

@Stephen,

Is there an internal bug logged for this? As you said you can repro
it? If not I'll log one.

Jen,

Can you tell me the process how to migrate my Instructor Certificate to Autodesk? I worked hard to get the Certificate, and I hope I don't need to work on Max or Maya to get it again...

Thanks

I would contact Michael Sehgal for further information, as he heads up the education department at Autodesk.
Things work a lot differently with the ACI program than the old softimage programs.

Its not as cut and dry as taking the exam, that is a first step.
There is an ACI workshop that candidates need to sign up for, Autodesk has a number of them throughout the world. Its a three day workshop where certified evaluators watch candidates present three times over the three days and evaluate their instructional style as well as software knowledge.

Softimage has been added to the certification process, it was announced at Siggraph at the ACI meeting.
Its a lot closer to how it was with the Microsoft certification process with Pierre and GIno back in the day than it was with the Avid cert.

Well worth it though. There were Max and Maya ACI candidates at this last certification, there were a couple of Maya authors, some Maya programmers that worked for Autodesk,
Definitely knew their stuff. They took a lot away from the process on the instructional side.

Autodesk wants to ensure consistency of edu delivery, and understanding things such as learning cycles, floor management etc. are all part of the grading system.
Its not all about software skills.

I have been now at 3 of those events and I share the same vision with Adam.
Michael Seghal has really redefined the certification program  ;-)

Thanks, I see, I consider it. But to be honest besides my job, it is hard to dedicate time again to pass any kind of exams, etc.

Hi

Here's a workaround:
http://wp.me/powV4-mG

I found that if you add registry entries, then Softimage will run your Python PPGLayout logic.

This seems to have fixed the errors we've beens struggling with. Is
this fix going to be implemented in future Softimage installers?

I suspect that any fix will involve not looking for those registry entries when you're using the bundled Python.

Not sure I understand. You can't set oLayout.Language = "Python" using
the bundled Python without the fix. So this is something that needs to
be implemented during install no?

If Softimage doesn't look for those registry entries, then you don't need to do anything during install.
I think the external Python install put in those reg entries. We shouldn't be looking at them, so our code should be updated not to look for those reg entries.

Of course, the devs will figure out for sure what the problem is.
