Hey guys,

Finally we have released GEAR 1.0.0
Have a look at our opensource webpage to download it.

Please also read the documentation about the installation. You will need Python and to install the GEAR Python libraries.

Also Helge released new versions of Melena, Momentum and Essence.

Enjoy and give us feedback !

Thanks so much for all of the work, Jeremie!

As a side not on Momentum and Melena,
the updates are not critical, and therefore we did only publish them for
2011 SP1 (and higher).
However, if anybody likes, you can compile them for 2010. Just pull the
source code
off github (see our website for links)

Details:

Momentum 1.3
- Passive and Active States are now properly implement
This allows animation between passive and active by setting the
mass to zero.
This has been implement the same way for ICE rbds as well as
normal rbds.

Melena 1.4
- Compound to taper strandsize along strand (Set Strandsize)
- Support for using melena for normal hair (Create Melena Hair
Control)
This enables you to use all of the Melena effects as well as
simulation on
Strands, but then output to a normal XSI hair object, which can
be used
for rendering.

Jeremie... is GEAR only for 2010, or is there a 2011 compile in the works as well?

It should work with both.

I personally tested :
Linux 64 + 2010
Linux 64 + 2011
Win32 + 2010

and I think Miquel has used it with
Win64 + 2011

Just for info, we compiled it with 2011 but I had no problem to use it on 2010 with the same dll.

In also created the scene samples with 2010 just so most of the people can open them.

Fantastic work Jeremie and friends.
Can someone post this stuff anywhere else than places that are specific to SI?
You need to show this stuff to a broad audience and spread the word.
Like:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/
in the 'CG News forum' and 'Character Rigging' forum.

For those looking for the training videos.
Here they are:

I actually did. ;-) I took the rig guide, pulled back the "knees" on the horse a bit, re-did the rig, importing the horse .emdl file (which skinned it perfectly with the .xml skinning file) and got a simulated tail in the process! It looks better than the horse file you provided (the knees were backwards, which made it look humorous, like a couple guys in a horse costume). Of course, I'm teasing. It was great to go through the process and test out the features, and it worked without a hitch. Thank you SO much for this great tool!!!

Hi Jeremie
one small thing about the modules installation, this could be a matter of taste
but I generally automate the task make an OnStartup event that set the python path
based on the plugin path.

Hey Ahmidou,

maybe that would be a good idea... I don't know. But are you sure the event is fired before any other plugin is loaded ?
I have to test that.

Also I didn't want to automatise the thing too much because GEAR has in the first place been developed for production and in a properly organized pipeline I think you want to exactly know where are your python libraries and which one is loaded.
But I agree the installation process would be easier with a simple OnStartup event.

That's not fair !

On a more serious note, Helge showed me what he wants to implement inside Momentum 2. It is just AWESOME.
So now Helge, everybody's waiting for you.

I'd normally create a new start up event in a clean plugin that doesn't
contain any custom modules and set the module path from there. Then
Force to update all plugins in the start up.
Works all the time even though it's not that "pretty" looking as you
sometimes got some ignoreable error messages when other plugin get
loaded first.

I haven't checked so for all I know this is implemented and I need to
RTFM, but when building a rig, does it embed the version of the rig
builder modules used?

Is there any way to know if a rig built with GEAR was rigged using an
old module's rig setup?

For example if I made a GEAR module called "superArm v1.0" and rigged
something, then release v1.5 which makes a slightly better rig from
the same guide, how can a GEAR user know that their rig used superArm
v1.0 instead of the new v1.5?

If it's not presently possible, I'd like to request some way to have
module versions automatically embeded somewhere in the rig when GEAR
builds it.

Cheers,

Thanks for testing it Ahmidou. That's really interesting.
My rig can definitely be optimized to. I know some solvers can be optimized and also I should get rid of a curve length evaluation in my spine rig.

Hey I noticed that when you're in FK mode, and rotate the fore arm Z>90 and then Y>90, the interpolated roll is screwed up.
I know that normally this should be the biceps/humerus should be X rotated instead of the of the forearm Y, but from my experience, animators
torture rigs as far as they can and will do it, maybe it's also easier/quicker for them to make all those rotations on the same unique bone.
So what I'm doing is to separate the roll in two from the clavicle to the elbow and form the elbow the wrist.
With this setup no matter how it's animated the roll will always be OK (until you pass the 180deg), this may be one of the reasons why mine is a little bit slower than yours

Hey Ahmidou.
This is one of the fix I did in the last release. (1.0.1).
Did you test with this one ?
I haven't updated the sample scenes, but if you rebuild one of the guide with this version you shouldn't have this issue anymore.

And this shouldn't affect the performance as I just changed a couple of parenting and constraint but didn't really add anything to make it work.

thanks for pushing all this test, this is really helping me a lot !

I noticed a tiny little setting that should be changed on the man_guide template:

In the "build rig from selected" options ppg, under settings tab, in "Rig Part Settings", the default options for the arm_RO_root, IK Reference, IK is using the "shoulder_LO_root" in the list. I changed it to "shoulder_RO_root" and it works properly. Otherwise, both right and left arms move when the left shoulder is rotated using the shoulder as the IK reference in both arms.

Thanks for making this system so easy to change, btw. The interface for customizing IK references is great!

Hey Pablo !

well, updating to 1.0.1 will not change anything to your existing rig.
So no, it should screw up anything.

To get the changes from 1.0.1 you need to rebuild the rigs.

Hi Jeremie
I'm getting thie error with the symmetrize weight map command:

# ERROR : Traceback (most recent call last):
#   File "<Script Block >", line 374, in gear_SymWeightMapPoints_
Execute
#     weights[sym_array[0][i]] = weights[i]
# TypeError: 'tuple' object does not support item assignment

# ERROR : OLE error 0x80020101
Application.gear_SymWeightMapPoints()

This is strange as tuples are not used in the code.
I'm using the python installed with softimage, could it be the problem?

op = XSIFactory.CreateObject("sn_CurveResamplerOp")
# End Python

to:
# Python
op = XSIFactory.CreateObject("gear_CurveResamplerOp")
# End Python

Seems that the operator wasn't renamed in the "applyCurveResampleOp" function.

If you fix it you'll want to restart XSI or run the following Python
script and then make sure to "Update All" in the plug-in manager for
good measure:

# Python
import gear.xsi.curve as cur
reload(cur)
# End Python

I'd submit a fix to github but it's down.

Edit the gear_weightMapTools.py file for the "Symmetrize weight map"
issue starting at line 348:

# Python

def gear_SymWeightMapPoints_Execute():

if xsi.Selection.Count < 2:
gear.log("Select some points and a weight map", gear.sev_error)
return

pntSubComp = xsi.Selection(0)
wmap = xsi.Selection(1)

# Check if input doesn't match
if pntSubComp.Type not in ["pntSubComponent"] or wmap.Type not in ["wtmap"]:
gear.log("Invalid selection", gear.sev_error)
return

# Get Symmetry Map
symMap = uti.getSymmetryMap(wmap.Parent3DObject)
if not symMap:
return

# Get Arrays
points = pntSubComp.SubComponent.ElementArray
weights = wmap.Elements.Array[0]
sym_array = symMap.Elements.Array

lweights = [x for x in weights]

# Process
for i in points:
myWeights[int(sym_array[0][i])] = weights[i]

wmap.Elements.Array = lweights

# End Python

You need to translate the weight map element array into a list to be
able to act upon it and change the item values. You then set the
element array back to the values of the list as you can act upon the
element array tuple as a whole.

This needs to be added to the Global imports in the
gear_weightMapTools.py file so the "Select Weight map Points" works:

import gear.xsi.weightmap as wei

Lastly, most of the weight map tools aren't working because of a
consistent error trying to set the Element Array items that are still
in the form of a tuple. Take a look at the weight map functions for
this as it is there in most of them.

Hope this helps. g'night!

Thanks so much for all of the work, Jeremie!

As a side not on Momentum and Melena,
the updates are not critical, and therefore we did only publish them for 2011 SP1 (and higher).
However, if anybody likes, you can compile them for 2010. Just pull the source code
off github (see our website for links)

Details:

Momentum 1.3
   - Passive and Active States are now properly implement
     This allows animation between passive and active by setting the mass to zero.
     This has been implement the same way for ICE rbds as well as normal rbds.

Melena 1.4
   - Compound to taper strandsize along strand (Set Strandsize)
   - Support for using melena for normal hair (Create Melena Hair Control)
     This enables you to use all of the Melena effects as well as simulation on
     Strands, but then output to a normal XSI hair object, which can be used
     for rendering.

I just downloaded gear and have been playing around, looks like a great tool.
While i was messing i found that when i build the rig from the guide that it doesn't build the legs of the rig? I may be doing something wrong as i have just started to mess but just curious to see if anyone is having a similar issue?

The rig is built according to your selection.

Hi Jeremy,

I had no time to play with Gear yet, but the one thing I'm most curious about it whether these rigs are "self-supporting" after they have been built, or do you still need Gears installed to operate them afterwards.
In other words: Giving a character rigged with Gear to somebody who does not have Gear installed on his system, will he be able to work with the rig?

Thanks a lot,

Stefan

Hey Stephan,

Unfortunately you need the solvers dll to use the rigs.
It's the only plugin required.

Of course if you want to use the synoptic view, or any other tool that comes with gear, then you need the complete installation.

Ideally I would like one day to have a copy of each solver as a JScript intern scripted operator.
I already did it for my previous rig system and that was really cool for two reasons
- First as you mentioned I could pass the rig to someone else without any plugin installed.
- But also, to debug the operator I could directly open the scripted op and do my changes and see the result live (much better than going back and forth to Visual Studio, compile, load/unload...)

I already started to translate some of them, but it takes time... and I don't have so much.

Sorry for the possibly obvious question.

Since the modules should be accesible for all the computers in a workgroup, wich would be the best way to maintain it in several computers, and be able to upgrade them regularly, can the pythonpath be setup in some way dinamically from inside xsi? maybe with a custom plugin that loads before Gear? or as simple as put the pythonpath to an network share?

Thanks in advance.

Check the release notes, it's all detailled which component is animation compatible or not.
It shouldn't too much of a problem, so if you have any issue with that update let me know.
I changed a couple of default rotorder according to animators feedback, so yes it can break some animation but you can always put them back to what they were if needed.
