Depends on what you are trying to do.
We have both xmPie and an older EMC product called Visual Compuset, and use both, depending upon the application.
If you want to produce high volumes of complex, multi page documents that have multiple stocks, and finishing (ie stitching, tape binding) such as insurance policies or Mutual Fund statements, then xmpie is NOT the way to go. Too slow, too hard to automate and lacking some production niceties like job tickets, etc.
If you want to produce smaller volumes of shorter, graphics-intensive documents, xmpie is a better bet. Direct Mail, especially when you want to measure responses, or if you need a storefront, is ideal for xmPie.
If you want your clients to manage the information that will be in the documents (ie insurance wordings), eXpression is a clear choice. EMC acquired Expression when the bought Document Sciences Corp. Document Science cut their teeth in the insurance industry, and the product is really optimized for that type of business.
Both have a steep learning curve, but if you know inDesign, xmPie will be easier to get up and running, at least for simple applications.
