Memory leak on XMind Pro (WinXP)

I noticed that the maps end up disappearing after a few hours of use,
and that my computer becomes sluggish if I leave XMind on.

XMind 3.0.1
JRE 1.6.0_05-b13
WinXP Pro 2002 SP2

I ran the following sequence after opening XMind and a map I've been
working with in the last couple of weeks (nothing very large):

I open Xmind: 104,132 K of memory used
Extend map branch: 127,208 K
Collapse map branch: 139,992 K
Extend map branch: 161,216 K
Collapse map branch: 203,596 K
Extend map branch: 245,184 K
Collapse map branch: 284,372 K
Extend map branch: 311,428 K
Collapse map branch: 350,452 K
Extend map branch: 384,688 K
Collapse map branch: 424,216 K
Extend map branch: 465,748 K
Collapse map branch: 497,620 K
Extend map branch: 539,092 K
Collapse map branch: 579,000 K
Extend map branch: 620,540 K
Collapse map branch: 635,164 K
Extend map branch: 684,652 K
Collapse map branch: 744,424 K
Extend map branch: 785,860 K
Collapse map branch: 825,088 K
Extend map branch: 866,664 K
Collapse map branch: 889,392 K
Extend map branch: 931,372 K

(by now the map has disappeared from the screen)
closing the file (but not the app): 835,912 K are left over

I don't what you guys think, but an average of 74.08 Megabytes (with a
standard deviation of 10.52 Megabytes) for extending and collapsing
the *same* branch is unreasonable. Especially since the only way to
recover that memory is to shut down XMind entirely.

Granted, turning off animation improves the situation (but does not
eliminate it):

Extend map branch: 103,452 K
Collapse map branch: 109,176 K
Extend map branch: 111,292 K
Collapse map branch: 111,856 K
Extend map branch: 113,220 K
Collapse map branch: 113,956 K
Extend map branch: 115,264 K

Well,
Xmind acts in the same reprehensible manner on my xp sp2, too.

Today i started a new map, but when i cut and pasted some text into a
new box, all the map just became not visible.
I tried zooming in or out, but the map was not there anymore, that's
all.
Task manager told me that xmind was sucking 1,7 gbyte of virtual
memory (and my hard disk was snoring like a horse, obviously).
Is it a bug? (1,7 gbyte of memory should allow me to run a server, not
a map-tool, in my opinion).
some workaround?

slow, even if I restart - seems very sluggish

Agreed. Expanding / collapsing branches leaks memory. For a map 3
levels deep and total 13 leaves with most of them having 2 sentences
of notes: 15 cycles of collapsing and expanding each of the branches
leaked me 100 MB. Without animation, growth is slower.

I tested this problem on the newly released version 3.0.2 and the leak
is still there. :(
I'm rather reluctant to spend money on something that needs to be shut
down and reopened every thirty minutes...

Hi  All 

I find that the memory problem has two kinds: 

• One activity will cause memory usage up to 1G, such as edit a topic, collapse and extend a branch, create a few topic. 
• While using XMind for a long time continuously. The memory is raising all the time without reducing. 

XMind is focusing on solve the second problem. At present, you can try to close and open XMind after every 2-3 hours. (Please enable "Restore last session on startup" at "Preferences > General" ). Then XMind will remember the opened files.

 

As for the first kind trouble, the main reason may not on XMind itself. As I know, XMind is still looking for the fuse.

I have found that memory usage in Linux (Linpus Lite - based on Fedora
- on a Acer Aspire One netbook) is a bit excessive (i don't believe
that 100+MBs is required) there is no memory leak. This is not the
case for my Windows machines. You state that the problem may not be
XMind itself, which implies you believe it is Java. I have not
experienced memory leaks with other Java programs and so I think the
fault lies in how XMind links with Java.
However in my limited experience Java does use more memory that one
would consider 'normal'. I have found that you don't need to use XMind
a long time (hours) to rack up a serious memory leak, panning seems to
replicate the issue within minutes. Perhaps the XMind is too complex
for Java? How about converting it to another language?

My mindmaps have got to the size where XMind just leaks and then
crashes, please fix this soon!

I am also using Windows XP and Xmind rapidly slows down my machine to the point where it becomes unusable. The memory used by Xmind is huge even for a relatively small map. I'm forced to close the program and cannot use it.

I posted a new topic without seeing this first.

I'm having the same problem with the current build. Right now it's at
740MB without having done much except move some nodes around. Right
now I have the free version, but seriously, this is unusable. I would
never take a chance on the paid version, given how quickly this become
bloated. Is there an older version available that doesn't have this
problem??

XMind is confused this memory problem. Because a few users have this trouble. And all computers, macs work well in XMind Ltd. XMind is trying the best to improve it.

Yes. This is the biggest trouble for XMind. This memory problem can not re-produce on any their computers(Win XP, Vista, Mac). :(

I have to shut down after using the program after about 5 or 10 minutes. Also, the mind maps disappear periodically and I have to restart the program.

 

It is currently unusable.

I'm a huge fan of Xmind and I just subscribed to the pro version after
weeks of test.I knew about that memory leak but I thought I could deal
with it. But no, it's too difficult to work with it after 10 mn.
So every day I read this group and the Google code page of Xmind,
waiting for an announce about a resolution of this bug.
And I just saw on the google code page that the memory leak bug was
identified and almost resolved.
First of all congratulations and thanks for the work.
But now, here is my question: do we have to wait till the next version
to have a clean Xmind (2 months, it's too long). Stephen, is there a
solution for us to customize our 3.0.2 version to avoid the memory
leak ? Or is there a way for you to give us just a little updated file
to solve this problem ?

in version v3.0.3 (portable) the problem still exists (at least at my
XP machine).
You may try temporary workaround adding line:

-XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=20

to xmind.ini

It works for me.

This memory leak thing still seems to be there in the latest Xmind v3.41 !

My files stopped loading more that one at the time (38MB big files). Have to restart the program to 

make it work again.

Copied the the content within Xmind and pasted it into a new sheet and the size is now 600kB !!!!!

Just move the subjects around in Xmind and save, now suddenly 900kB. Change background color

and now the size is 1.8MB !???

You have big problems !!!
