Hi,

ok, in short:

there is a 16GB SD card with pictures on it but can't be read by any computer. Recovery programs shows 0.5MB used but there are more pictures on it. so nothing can be recovered by the common way.
Has anybody an idea how to get those pictures out of the card? I heard most of the time it's the memory controller chip which is handling the transfers from and to USB...but not sure about this and also not how to solve this problem.
Any help or advice is very much appreciated.

~Lutz

Might sound silly but have you confirmed the following:
- switched USB cables
- switched memory card readers

Never tried to recover SD but spinning disks I use dd_restore from bsd as its got a retry and skip bad blocks built in.

I had a similar problem before with an old point and shoot nokia, all I did was change the settings for hidden files on my macbook to allow all hidden files to be visible and then transferred them my sd card. Also, is the lutz name from phantasy star?

Thanks.

No, the camera can not read it anymore. Computer says "format the card" and by trying it says "no storage device found"
So there is no solution for just doing the trick with hidden files etc.
we tried different computers (MAC and PC9, different card readers.

Lutz is MY name...dunno if there is a star named after me ;-)

Have you tried scratching the contacts? Also before insert it in the slot put spit on the contacts to bridge any oxidation that may have happened on the surface. I find this to be a common problem which, ahum, often can be solved temporary...

Yep, we used some kind of raw clothe to rub the contacts, i guess there is no problem.

Paul, this is Linux command code right (dd_restore)? but can you restore any drive with this? since the card is a windows compatible file system how can this be done with a restore in Linux?

it's a lowlevel clone :) copy what you can in block by block it doesn't
care whats on it, then system tools can try and rebuild it without
destroying the original

Also it might be that the fat or exfat filesystem got damaged.
I read that its more common than a hardware failure.
there should be specific tools for memory cards and this filesystems out there, but i never had to try them.

To retrieve lost, inaccessible and damaged audio and video files,
memory card recovery is done. There are several such tools available
which can be used for the purpose of recovering lost data from
unusable memory card. Kernel for Digital Media is such an advanced
software that not only retrieves accidentally deleted pictures but
also recovers files that have been corrupted or damaged.

We tried different card readers and also different recovery software. That's why I am asking for a different solution. I mean, there have to be a way to access the memory without or with an external controller, if that is the issue.

If you can get to the innards and access the chip pins, then maybe something like this BusPirate can help. It would also help if there are visible markings on the chips.

See http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/Bus_Pirate.

There are some chip examples here: http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/Bus_Pirate#Chip_demonstrations, that show how to access some memory & other chips.

There are plenty more examples in the forums where people have reverse engineered stuff and quite a few who half fixed corrupt computer BIOS etc.

I have one and can give you an intro and lend it to you if you want to try it.

Thanks Spencer, i will check this and come back to you :-) That's very helpful since I really think there is a hardware problem.
