as this open issue http://code.google.com/p/sqlite-jdbc/issues/detail?id=10
says: the method MetaData.supportsGetGeneratedKeys() should just
return true instead of false.

then for example spring's SimpleJdbcInsert.executeAndReturnKey() could
be used.

any arguments against that?

I use stmt.getGeneratedKeys() with the sqlite-jdbc driver all the time. MetaData.supportsGetGeneratedKeys() should return true.
