Walton Hit and Run
A man walking along Highway 90 was struck by an unknown vehicle and left along the roadway until another vehicle spotted him. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, just after midnight Saturday morning, 42-year-old Joseph Steven Kennedy, of DeFuniak Springs, was walking along the northern westbound shoulder of Highway 90 near Peacock Road and the Okaloosa line with his back to the traffic. An unknown vehicle was travelling westbound and drifted over the white fog line on the side of the road. The vehicle struck Kennedy from behind and did not stop. The victim was discovered by passing motorists shortly after the crash. He was taken to the trauma center in Pensacola with critical injuries.
The unknown vehicle will have right passenger side damage and will be missing the right side view mirror. It is black in color. Any information, contact the FHP or your local law enforcement. Alcohol is not a factor for the victim. Charges are pending.
Jobs Plus Freeport
Linda Sumlin, with the Workforce Development Board Jobs Plus, says they are expanding services to Freeport but will have continued services in DeFuniak Springs.
She says it is a geographic decision, but they are not leaving DeFuniak Springs. Sumlin says they will continue services expanding with existing partners in the city. She says DeFuniak Springs is very important to them.
Sumlin will be on the next County Commission Agenda and will also go before the DeFuniak Springs City Council.

WCSO More Arrests
Deputies and investigators with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) have been hot on the trail of the suspects involved in a string of burglaries occurring in the Driftwood Estates area in south Walton.
Deputies responded to East Mack Bayou in reference to a suspicious persons call. An elderly neighbor made contact with two male individuals in her neighbor’s yard who were hanging around a window at the back of the house. They quickly fled after the neighbor spoke to them. Law enforcement and the owner of the residence were contacted and deputies found an open window, as well as a damaged window screen. Deputies were able to locate subjects, Miguel Arceo, 16 of Santa Rosa Beach and Thomas Howells, 22, of Santa Rosa Beach. After gathering more information during the investigation, both were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Structure and Criminal Mischief.
The two have also been linked to several other burglaries in the Driftwood Estates area. Howells has additionally been charged with one count of Felony Criminal Mischief, one count of Grand Theft, two counts of Burglary, one count of Dealing in Stolen Property, one count of Grand Theft of a Firearm and one count of Grand Theft from the Elderly. Arceo has been charged with one count of Felony Criminal Mischief, one count of Grand Theft, one count of Grand Theft from the Elderly, one count of Grand Theft of a Firearm, and two counts of Burglary.
Both were transported for booking to the Walton County Department of Corrections. Arceo was subsequently transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Center in Crestview. This continues to be an active investigation.

Northwest Florida State College is hosting two Baseball Camps--June 10-13 and June 17 -20 on the college’s Niceville campus. Expert coaching staff and players from the NWF State College Raiders Baseball Team will serve as camp instructors and will teach participants about the fundamentals of baseball in an educational and entertaining setting. The camp’s half-day sessions will be held at the college’s Raiders baseball field each day from 9 am until noon. The camp is open to boys ages 7 to 14 and the fee is $90. Campers may enroll in person at any NWFSC area campus or center for course #XRL 6024; Ref# 86114 (for June 10-13) or Ref# 86115 (June 17-20). Mr. Warren W. Baylet, age 91 of DeFuniak Springs passed away at his residence surrounded by his family. In leiu of flowers memorials may be made to The American Heart Association, The American Kidney Foundation or to Alzheimers Research, (envelopes are available at the funeral home). A time of visitation will be held Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5 until 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel. Interment will be beside his wife in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. Darlene Mallory Pugh, age 78, widow of the late Danny Martin Pugh passed away Thursday morning, May 16, 2013 in Joyce Goldenberg Covenant Hospice in Pensacola.
Memorials may be made in Darlene Pugh’s memory to Southwide Baptist Church or to Joyce Goldenbery Covenant Hospice. Services will be announced.
