DFS Special Election

Mac Work goes back to his council seat after winning the DeFuniak Springs special election Tuesday. The seat became vacant after Work was required to resign when he ran for Mayor. With the seat vacant, the special election was required and Work and Janie Griffith both qualified. Griffith has been active in council meetings and city activities.

Work won over Griffith 318 to 312 to take Seat 1. A special election like this is rare for the city as the seat was the only item on the ballot. The voters at the polls were 244 for Work and 231 for Griffith. The voters using the mail-in absentee ballots were 74 for Work and 81 for Griffith. Walton Supervisor of Elections Bobby Beasley reports a good return of absentee ballots.

Work will be sworn in for the next meeting, Monday, May 27th.

The winners also met the Sheriff and had photos made.

Jonathan Clenney was awarded overall winner and will have his artwork created into a poster to hang in all of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office stations. Jonathan attends West DeFuniak Elementary in DeFuniak Springs.

The contest was held during the month of April, commonly recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month.  Children were asked to create artwork depicting their favorite family activity.  Jonathan chose fishing, while Molly chose “taking a nature walk” and McKenna chose “fishing”.

DFS Police and Safety

Members from the DeFuniak Springs Police continue to work to protect and serve their community. Lt. Tillman Mears says, while it’s almost impossible to inform the public of every incident and all the duties performed by officers; they feel the community needs a summary of what the police are doing. He says citizens and police working together and sound police tactics provide an enjoyable and safer community to live in.

On May 9, Mears says he was given the honor to present a “Women’s Safety Presentation” at the Walton County Health Department. The presentation was focused on the safety of women that work late by themselves.

May 10, the DeFuniak Springs Police joined with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in the “Operation Lifesaver”. Since 1972 Operation Lifesaver programs have augmented important engineering improvements and law enforcement efforts to produce a steady decline in injuries and fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings (an 83% decrease in incidents since the founding).

The next day the police participated in the annual “MAY DAY” festivities at We Care Park. The day was full of free entertainment for the whole family. Chief Mark A. Weeks says they can’t miss an opportunity to educate citizens when it comes to safety.

May 16, officers participated along with other organizations at West DeFuniak Elementary School in “Safety and Career Day”. Special guest “Eddie the Eagle” made an appearance as well as providing them with gifts.

On May 22, the DeFuniak Springs Police will host a Safety Day at the First Christian Academy. Officers, along with other organizations, will be onsite providing and fitting bicycle helmets on the children as well as performing safety demonstrations.

In another effort to save lives in DeFuniak Springs, the police has once again joined forces with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and law enforcement leaders across the State to conduct a special high-visibility Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign thru June 2, 2013.

On May 25th, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., members from the DeFuniak Springs Police will be hosting their first “Safety Saturday Event”. The location will be in the parking lot of Tractor Supply, located at 931 U.S. Highway 331 South. The DeFuniak Springs Fire Department and others are scheduled to be on site.

City Marshal, Chief Mark A. Weeks, invites you to be a part in making you and your child’s world a safer place in DeFuniak Springs. He says Safety Saturday’s goal is to create a free family-friendly event that promotes education and safety awareness.

WCSB Meeting

Walton Superintendent started the Board meeting with an announcement that South Walton High Student Athletes won the state champion for academics. Anderson also announced the district has been designated for the seventh consecutive year as a high performing school district. Anderson said it is not only the students, but the staff who helps to make this achievement.

The Board approved an agreement for employee relations services, the person who works with Anderson on the collective bargaining and school board policies. The Board approved an agreement with SunTrust for banking, based on the same agreement with another district. The attorney said this is a better agreement than the one previously used. English language learners will benefit from approval of a grant to provide services. Financial summaries and personnel recommendations were also approved.

The state had $4 million available so Walton wrote a grant for training principals to use a teacher rating form so they all do a fair and equitable job. The board was told this is important to make sure it is done right since teacher’s pay will eventually be linked. Board member Gail Smith said she feels it is critical that all the principals do this the same way and it is fair. This is all part of the process staff says is still evolving for implementation in 2014-2015.

Anderson presented the names for the School Security Task Force. The change was to remove some and add others. The Board approved a food services agreement that will provide some advantage by purchasing through a power buying group. The group approved a reduction to the Walton Athletic Complex project. The change is through the scaling back the needs of the architect. A Calstaldi Analysis will look at whether to remove and replace old buildings in the district.

Hammock Bay in Freeport donated land that can be used as a future school site. The special warranty deed with revision was approved. Developer Jay Odom said Hammock Bay is growing rapidly and since they are adding to the school load they gave the land. He told Board members they will likely have to be out there with groundbreaking shovels soon.

This Friday at 10:30 am there will be a workshop to discuss personnel needs.
