Alabama Crash Kills Florida Children

A two-vehicle crash Tuesday night in Covington County Alabama claimed the
life of three Florida children and injured two adults.

The crash occurred just before 7 in the evening on Alabama 137 at the
intersection of Covington County 4 in the Wing community. Danielle Pippins,
8, Janniell Pippins, 8, and Savannah Furr, 11, all of Baker, were killed
when the 1993 Ford Tempo they were riding in was struck by a 2010 Toyota
Corolla driven by 18-year-old Christine Harris, of Birmingham. Harris was
taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The
driver of the Tempo, 54-year-old Dianne Poire, of Sarasota, was taken to
Baptist Hospital in Pensacola where she is listed in critical condition.

The crash is being investigated by the Alabama State Troopers.

Wal-Mart Donates To Santa

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office received a $1,000 donation from Walmart
during their grand opening event held in Santa Rosa Beach.

Each year, the WCSO Santa Patrol and Walmart team up for a fundraiser and
donation gift drive to support underprivileged children during the winter
holiday season. Lt. Eddie Farris says last year, the Santa Patrol generated
funds to provide more than 208 children with more than 1,950 bicycles, dolls
and other donated toys. The Deputy Santa helper says they are proud of the
partnership they have with Walmart as well as other local businesses and
individuals who continue to help the children of Walton County.

The new store is opened in Santa Rosa Beach. The store is like a
Supercenter, but on a slightly smaller format and will not be open 24 hours.

Businesses and individuals who wish to make monetary donations are
encouraged to address checks to Walmart/Walton County Sheriff’s Office, and
mail them to the attention of Lt. Eddie Farris of the WCSO’s Citizen
Services Division at 752 Triple G Road, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32435.

Liberty Grass Fire

Another hot day, another hot fire. To say a fire is hot is usually an
understatement, but when you are talking about firefighters responding to a
fire the issue becomes one of efficiency and safety. Wednesday afternoon
Liberty Volunteer Fire Department was sent to a home site in a rural
location of north Walton. A grass fire was reported to be growing and
threatening a structure. The firefighters arrived to find about half an acre
burning with the fire growing rapidly due to the dry grass and wind. The
fire was attacked and about 50% brought under control, but it also ignited
the nearby woods. Argyle Volunteer Fire Department and Walton Fire-Rescue
were called to assist. The Division of Forestry was also called for support.

The fire was eventually contained and Liberty Fire Department's Roger Roy
said they were concentrating on making sure the perimeter was well drenched
to prevent the fire from reigniting and escaping. A worker was on scene when
the fire broke out, but the cause was not immediately known.

Like the structure fire in the Freeport/Portland area the day before, the
safety of the firefighters soon became a concern. Temperatures were near 100
with a heat index of around 110. The fire chiefs on scene made sure their
crews drank plenty of water with Walton Fire-Rescue bringing additional
bottles.
