Accidents
Friday afternoon, a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire was eastbound on U.S. Highway
90 as a 1999 KW Log Truck was westbound. The sports car turned in front of
the semi and was struck in its right side. The truck pushed the small car
on the north shoulder and the car collided with three FDOT signs and a
directional sign. The car car then collided with a utility trailer with an
extended flexible pipe. The car’s driver was taken to the trauma center in
Pensacola via air ambulance.
The driver of the log truck said the car was the second vehicle to suddenly
turn in front of him trying to get into the Raceway gas station in Mossy
Head. A witness said he saw the car following another vehicle and what
appeared to be the car trying to beat the other vehicle while crossing the
the westbound lanes. Charges are pending.
Also Friday, a 2012 Mazda driven by 29-year-old Chantell Elfer of LA, was
stopped facing south in the left turn lane of U.S. 331 at Highway 20. A
1991 Jeep, driven by 18-year-old Murray Cawthon of DeFuniak Springs, was
going north. The first vehicle proceeded to turn onto Highway 20 and the
two collided. Both cars rotated and came to a rest on the shoulder.
The driver of the Jeep said he had a green light and did not see the Mazda
until it was too late. The FHP trooper said he found gouge marks indicating
the second vehicle was in the outside lane. The driver of the first car
said she had a solid green light and did not see the second vehicle. A
witness said she saw a solid green light and saw the Mazda turn in front of
the Jeep. The driver of the Mazda was charged with Violation of Right of
Way. All injuries were minor.

Mrs. Peggy Ann Cleckler, age 62, passed away Thursday, October 4. Graveside
services will be held 4:00 PM, Monday, October 8, at Mossy Head Cemetery
with Reverend Bill Ferrand officiating. Floral arrangements are being

Betty Solomon, age 81, of the Caney Creek Community, passed away Thursday,
October 4th. Flora arrangements are being accepted or memorials may be made
in her name to the outreach ministries of First baptist Church of DFS.
Betty’s family will receive friends Monday, from 10 until 11 am with
funeral services beginning at 11am at the church. Burial will follow in the
