DFS Man Arrested For Beating Boy

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports the Walton County Sheriff's Office says 27-year-old Marshall Nance was arrested and charged with beating a five-year-old child with a book after he allegedly hit the young boy, causing severe bruising.

The child had deep black, blue and yellow bruises across his entire buttocks and on his hips, indicating the injuries were in various stages of healing, the report said. He had spots caused by minor hemorrhaging on his ear and two linear marks on the side of his face.

The arrest report says the boy indicated Nance spanked him with a book. During the boy's examination at the Children's Advocacy Center, he said Nance had hit him on previous occasions when he was mad at him for not doing his homework, the report said.

Gulf Power Looking At Ways To Strengthen Economy

Gulf Power has been active in economic development in Northwest Florida and now is beefing up its business development efforts through a number of new initiatives, including grants, trade shows, and leadership development.

The utility has recently introduced a new program that provides grants to businesses that move into buildings that have been vacant for six months or longer. The “Re-occupancy” incentive is designed to fill vacant storefronts by providing a grant based on the total number of square feet and the type of business. The City of DeFuniak Springs is looking at a similar program after seeing the efforts by the power utility.

John Hutchinson, Gulf Power’s director of Public Affairs and Economic Development said they are also looking at strengthening staff and offering other incentives and efforts to help grow jobs.

Hutchinson also noted the upcoming Gulf Power Economic Symposium as an opportunity for business, community and government leaders to get together to discuss economic development issues. He says they have more than 500 local, regional and state leaders that we bring together each year to hear national speakers, to look at our economic development pluses and minuses and to learn how they can improve. He says it is important we have everyone pulling in the same direction.

Hutchinson said interested parties can get more information on the Re-occupancy Incentive, the Economic Symposium and more at gulfpower.com.

Results of Traffic Safety Awarness

The last part of August and the start of September saw the “DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER” campaign as members from several police and sheriff’s agencies across Florida participated in the Labor Day Driving Crackdown event. The numbers for part of our area are in and the police report arrests were made.

Even though this is an everyday operation for DeFuniak Springs Police as well as other agencies, the police say it is their goal to educate citizens that during holidays the chances of being a victim of a negligent or under the influence driver increases.

During approximately twelve duty hours DeFuniak Springs Police made two Driving Under the Influence arrests, four Suspended Licenses arrests, and four Felony arrests. Also during the operation there were three Fugitives apprehended, nineteen unrelated arrests and ten citations issued.

Members of the DeFuniak Springs Police say they are at work for you. They say they believe through tough enforcement and with your help, they can make the streets and neighborhoods safer.

The police also remind you that... FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE.
