Walton Emergency Management State Report

Walton County is not expected to be one of two Emergency Management Agencies in Florida that scored less than exemplary in a report. Major Joe Preston, with the Walton County Sheriff’s Emergency Management says he has been in contact with the state and they confirm Walton has indeed met the requirements.

Preston said the report has not yet been sent to the governor and the county has not yet received it. He says the media received the information before the two countries cited in the report. According to Preston, the report was leaked to the media by someone out of our area.

The problem concerned a debris removal plan. Preston says he talked with Florida Region 1 Emergency Management Coordinator Stormy LeBlanc and the correct information was indeed turned in. Walton has been told they indeed have met the requirements and will not be listed as Less Than Exemplary.

The final report should be available in November.

OCSO Home Invasion

A Fort Walton Beach man says he was punched several times and robbed during a home invasion around 1:30 this morning on Pelham Road. The 64-year old victim told Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies he was sitting inside his home when he heard his back door open. He says three black males came in and one of the individuals walked over and punched him several times while demanding money. The thieves then stole jewelry, wallet, and other items before leaving out the back door.

The man described the robbers as clean shaven, between the height of 5’10” and 6’00” tall.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 850-651-7400 or 850-863-TIPS.

Firefighters, EMS and Deputies Recognized For Saving Lives

On Friday, September 14th, firefighters from the DeFuniak Springs Fire Department, Walton County Fire-Rescue and Walton County Sheriff’s Office Deputies performed a rescue of persons entrapped in a burning structure. Three children and pregnant mother were helped from the burning home. The smoke was dense enough the responders feel it was only a short time before the children would have succumbed to it.

At a presentation Monday morning, State Representatives Brad Drake and Marti Coley and Helen Hunt Rigdon with Jeff Miller’s Office joined Fire Chief Brian Coley and Major Joe Preston in recognising the Firefighters and Deputies.

As part of the response, Sgt. James Pitman was first on scene and then Deputy Sheriff Darryl Goddin showed up. The ambulance also arrived. The deputies went to the house and beat on the doors and windows trying to get a response.  After no response, Pitman kicked the door in and he and Goddin started to crawl in the house, trying to find the little bit of air along the floor. The DeFuniak Springs Fire Department arrived on-scene first and Lieutenant Chad Nelson and Firefighter/EMT Randy Hatcher told them to back away and shut the door while they suited up.The two then entered the burning structure in search of four persons reported to be trapped in the house. Walton County Fire-Rescue arrived and Firefighter/EMT George “Buddy” McLeod and Battalion Chief Bill May also made entry into the burning, smoke-filled structure. Additional deputies arrived and while the firefighters were working to search the home, the deputies ran to the back corner of the house where the family was located.  The firefighters rescued the 3 children. They thought the mother was with them but mom stayed in the house, possibly having become confused in the darkness and smoke. The bathroom window then started to crack and the deputies heard screams for help.  They were able to open the window and pull the mother out to safety. They also realized she was pregnant.

The deputies on scene were:
Sgt. James Pitman, D/S Darryl Goddin, D/S Brandon Newsom, D/S Thomas Thillet, D/S Dustin Cosson
Fire-Rescue personnel on scene were:
WCFR Firefighter/EMT George “Buddy” McLeod and Battalion Chief Bill May
DeFuniak Springs Fire Department Lieutenant Chad Nelson and Firefighter/EMT Randy Hatcher
