News Segment 1

Missing Boater Found

After almost a week, a family’s time of waiting is over after the missing boater was recovered from Choctawhatchee Bay Sunday morning. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) received a 911 call around 9:10 a.m. from a boater in the Choctawhatchee Bay who had located a body. WCSO beach/marine patrol responded to an area in the middle of the bay north of County Road 393.

The body was identified as Robert Shawn Gregory, the missing boater from the vessel that capsized on October 29. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to the scene, as well as the medical examiner’s office.

WCSO and Freeport Fire Department have been assisting the FWC with the search this week, using numerous boats, a helicopter, a wave runner, a cadaver dog, the dive team and the MBAT (Mobile Command). The FWC is currently investigating this incident. The boat’s other passenger swam to shore and was treated and released from the hospital.

OCSO Operation Felon Sweep

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with The Florida Sheriffs Task Force, recently launched an initiative to remove felons from Florida’s streets. Operation Felon Sweep focused on removing violent felons, felons with outstanding warrants, and sexual offenders and predators from our communities. It combined efforts from 43 Sheriff’s Offices between September 28th and October 22nd and resulted in 11,875 arrests statewide.

The OCSO was proud to take an active role in this initiative.
OCSO FELONY ARRESTS                                     289
(including: FOUR aggravated batteries, one aggravated assault, FOUR home invasion
robbery/armed robbery, TEN felony domestic violence, and six firearms offenses)
OCSO MISDEMEANOR ARRESTS                        56

“Operation Felon Sweep was a successful partnership of Sheriff’s Offices joining forces in a concentrated effort to make our streets safer across all jurisdictions,” said Sheriff Larry Ashley. “All you have to do is look at the number of local arrests and the statewide totals to see the relevance of this operation.”

The Florida Sheriffs Task Force says it is proud to have coordinated this effort to
make Florida’s streets a safer place for its citizens.

News Segment 3

OCSO Lifesaving Award

Sheriff Larry Ashley presented Lifesaving Awards to two Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputies who went to the aid of an unconscious individual at Destin Commons October 7th
.
Sheriff Ashley said the quick actions of Deputy Richard White and Deputy Tom Henry were critical in preventing the death of a man who had collapsed at a kiosk and was not breathing when they arrived. Deputy White, along with an unknown Good Samaritan, started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR. Deputy Thomas got Deputy White’s AED (automated external defibrillator) from his patrol car and successfully delivered a shock
to the man, who was then treated by an ambulance crew. He was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, recovered, and is reportedly doing well.

An AED is a portable electronic device that can help treat someone suffering from potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias.
