Walton Shooting

A domestic violence call turned into a shooting in the Valley View area of Walton County. Just after 6 am Thursday morning, Walton County deputies responded to a possible domestic violence call on Mack Edwards Road, south of Ponce De Leon.  According to the caller, her nephew’s girlfriend contacted her and told her she needed help because her boyfriend had sustained a gunshot injury.

Upon arrival, deputies and EMS attended to both subjects. The male subject suffered from a gunshot wound to the face in the jaw area and the female had facial injuries.  Both were transported by EMS to a local hospital where they are being currently being treated.

Investigators have been called out to assist in the investigation.  It is still very early in the investigation and as more details become available, they will be released. The crime scene was outside the ranch style home near some campers and a barn. The sheriff’s office Crime Scene was preparing an evidence box labeled for a long gun such as a shotgun or rifle.

Another Walton Fatality

Here is another report we are following up on where a driver was in an accident and died later from injuries. Last Friday afternoon on Ammons Road in the Mossy Head area of Walton County, 64-year-old James Lamar Ammons had just left his residence and was westbound on a private (dirt) drive, just east of Ammons Road. He lost control of the vehicle and struck a pine tree on the south side of the private drive. The vehicle then crossed back over the private drive and came to final rest in the bushes on the north side.

Ammons was transported via helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. He passed away from complications from his injuries on Tuesday. The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide team is investigating the crash. Seat belt usage is unknown. Alcohol is not a factor.

Stop On I-10 Nets Credit Card Fraud

Around 2:30 pm Wednesday a vehicle occupied by three subjects was stopped on Interstate 10 in Walton County by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) K-9 Unit for a traffic violation. A subsequent investigation conducted with WCSO Criminal Investigation Bureau revealed the subjects were in possession of fraudulent credit cards as well as a scanning device which is used to access information encoded on the magnetic strip of a payment card. The credit card account numbers embedded within the magnetic strip on twenty one of the cards did not match the credit card number pre-printed on the front of the card.

Ashley Troylynn Lucien, 20, of New Orleans, LA was charged with possession of four fraudulent credit cards, possession of a credit card scanning device which is used to access information encoded on the magnetic strip of a payment card and possession of one credit card which had the credit card number re-encoded.

Matthew Thomas Hawthorne, 25, of New Orleans, LA was charged with possession of six fraudulent credit cards and providing a false identification to the investigating K9 unit during the initial contact.
Brittney Lanell Sanders, 25, of New Orleans, LA was charged with possession of eleven fraudulent credit cards.
The subjects were arrested and booked into the Walton County Department of Corrections.

Walton Half Cent Sales Tax

The half cent sales tax that will pay for Walton’s share of the new northbound Clyde Wells Bridge has not started but consumers should see it on store receipts early next year. The tax is a voter approved way to fund the $75 million the State Department of Transportation wants as a local cost share to build the new bridge. The FDOT also promised that if Walton takes the initiative and puts up the money, they will advance the rest of the paving timeline to I-10. The tax will go into effect on January 1st.

While many felt since Walton has been asking for a widened U.S. 331 for over 50 years and with neighboring counties getting wider main roads, they should not have to come up with a match. But with the need said to be great and both hurricane evacuation and economic growth considered, the voters agreed to add the half cent. The tax eliminates the need for a toll bridge, something the county felt would hurt local workers and students with daily trips.

The tax will only be used to pay back the $75 million and the associated fees. SunTrust Leasing and Finance was selected to cover the loan. The loan can be paid back early and the hope is, as the economy improves, more money will come in and the tax will go away even quicker.

FBI Talks To Local Citizen Group

The FBI came to Walton County, but the G-man was here only to talk about the agency to a local citizen’s group. Walton Citizens For An Honest Government invited FBI Supervisory Senior Resident Agent James W. Stewart to talk about the agency. Stewart said one of the most enjoyable parts of his job is meeting with residents.

The agent was asked about recent reports of the FBI investigations and subpoenas in Walton County. He said he has no information about subpoenas in Walton and did not comment on any investigations. He did tell the group one of the best things they can do is to report any concerns about criminal activity to law enforcement. Stewart explained, much like the local police and sheriff report to the State’s Attorney, the FBI reports to the Department of Justice.
