Washington County Fatality

The Florida highway Patrol has released a report of a Washington County fatality accident last Saturday when 27-year-old Lance Olmstead, of Panama City Beach, driving a 2000 GMC Truck southbound on State Road 77 in the southbound lane in Washington County, died after running off the road and being ejected with no seat belt.

The driver allowed the right side tires to travel the edge of the paved shoulder of the roadway. Olmstead steered the truck back to the left and into the southbound lane, corrected to the right, causing the vehicle to rotate. He lost control. As it rotated, the truck left the roadway and crossed the southbound shoulder, grazed a utility pole and overturned, ejecting Olmstead. The truck overturned multiple times and then struck a large tree. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene by Washington County EMS. Olmstead was not wearing a seat belt. Drug/alcohol tests are pending. Charges are pending.

FWC Reports

A man was charged with operating a boat under the influence after authorities stopped his vessel overloaded with 18 people, including children. Personnel from the USCG Station Destin stopped a 22‑foot deck boat leaving Crab Island to perform a boating safety inspection. The grossly overloaded vessel had 18 people aboard, including several pregnant women and small children. During the inspection, USCG personnel observed signs of impairment from the operator. The vessel was placed in hip-tow and escorted a short distance to Station Destin to ensure the safety of the people onboard.

USCG personnel administered field sobriety tasks. Officer Ryan Nelson arrived to assist with the investigation. Based on USCG and Officer Nelson’s investigation, it was determined the operator was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The operator was arrested for boating under the influence (BUI) and transported to the Okaloosa County Jail. At the jail, Officer Nelson administered a breath test to determine the alcohol content of the operator. The operator provided a breath sample that registered .181 on the first sample and .174 on the second sample. The operator was charged with BUI.

Former Assistant Medical Examiner Owned Storage Unit Where Remains Were Found

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports the remains of more than 100 people have been found in a storage locker whose last owner was Dr. Michael Berkland, the former associate medical examiner for Okaloosa and Walton counties. The remains, which include 10 brains, as well as tissue samples and
portions of hearts and lungs, were located after Berkland stopped paying his bill at Uncle Bob’s Storage on Fairfield Drive in Pensacola, according to Bill Eddins, state attorney for Florida’s First Judicial Circuit.

The paper quotes Eddins who explained that when the storage unit was sold at auction, the person that bought that particular unit, when he opened it, discovered human remains . Berkland was relieved of his duties in Okaloosa and Walton counties in 2003 by then Medical Examiner Dr. Gary Cumberland. Cumberland cited Berkland’s failing to process autopsy reports in a timely fashion. The report also says
Berkland’s career prior to coming to Florida had been controversial.

Highway 90 Next To Get Update

Highway 90 in DeFuniak Springs has its initial phase of resurfacing completed and additional sidewalks, drainage and signage is being completed. The section east to Holmes County has been updated. Now the road to the west will also get an update.

C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. is scheduled to begin resurfacing 16 miles of U.S. 90 in Walton County from DeFuniak Springs to Mossy Head.  Work will begin at the Okaloosa County line continuing to Country Club Drive in DeFuniak Springs. Construction will consist of milling and resurfacing the existing roadway with new turn lane construction at the State Road (S.R.) 285 and U.S. 331 north intersections. New guardrail, minor drainage improvements and a new signal will be installed at the intersection of U.S. 90 and U.S. 331 north. S.R. 285 will also be resurfaced from south of I-10 to U.S. 90.  Motorists can expect minor traffic delays and lane restrictions during construction.

The FDOT says access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times.  Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling through the work zones and to be aware that speeding violations will be doubled when workers are present. Weather permitting the $5.8m project should be complete fall 2013.

Based on a citizen request, the FDOT is also looking at turn lanes for the intersection with Kings Lake Rd. The Florida Department of Transportation will be evaluating the intersection of U.S. 90 and Kings Lake Road in Walton County for an exclusive westbound right- turn and an exclusive eastbound left- turn lane on U.S 90 at this location. This evaluation will include a review of the documented crash history, gathering of traffic volume count data, and analyzing additional factors in determining what measure(s) may need to be implemented at this location. If the project is deemed needed, they will seek to have any recommended traffic operations improvements arising from the engineering study incorporated as part of the ongoing U.S. 90 resurfacing project.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Destin man on charges of sexually molesting two children. 65-year old Gregory Grant Goodson of Emerald Bay Drive is charged with sexual battery of a victim under the age of twelve and lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under the age of twelve.

In addition, investigators say he is also charged with tampering with a witness after offering $40,000 to the father of the children to drop the charges. During a controlled car, he says he “thought it would be a lot easier for all of them when he offered the money.”

Goodson was arrested August 24th at his home.

OCSO Looking Into Suspicious Incident

A boy did the right thing following “Stranger Danger” and “Don’t talk to strangers”. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is looking into an incident where a young boy says a man came out of a field on Lee Farm Boulevard near Crestview yesterday afternoon, whistled at him and attempted to get him to come over to him. The boy says the man asked him to "come here" and motioned with his finger for the child to come towards him. The boy instead ran inside the home and told his parents.

The man is described as a white male, approximately six feet tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds. He had brown hair and glasses and was wearing a gray hooded shirt, gray sweat pants and white jogging shoes. The boy says he was carrying a black plastic trash bag.

This currently appears to be an isolated incident. No similar incidents have been reported to the Sheriff's Office at this time but patrols have been stepped up in that area and if anyone has information please contact the Sheriff's Office at 850-689-5705 or Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 850-863-TIPS.
