The commercial bag limit for oysters in Bay County will be lowered to 10 60-pound bags per person or vessel, whichever is less, starting Oct. 1. This change will be in effect for the month of October only and is being made through an executive order by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Before the change, the bag limit was 20 bags per person or vessel. This change does not apply to active oyster leases.
This change was requested by the Bay County Commission and Bay County oyster harvesters to better sustain commercial oyster harvesting opportunities in the waters of Bay County.
The executive order effecting this change can be seen at MyFWC.com/About; click on “Inside FWC,” “Executive Director” and “Executive Orders.”

Ingalls
The Ingalls family had a reunion last Saturday and while many families in our area hold reunions, this one included anyone who wanted to remember the pioneer days as told by the pen of a pioneer girl, turned teacher, turned mother, turned author. The Ingalls family of Holmes County are related to Laura Ingalls Wilder of the Little House on the Prairie fame.
The Ingalls family have been holding a reunion for several years, but recently they began to honor and remember Laura. The event has grown to include anyone who wants to celebrate the pioneer life and what it took to settle our area and our nation.
Mary Jo Craft says the Little House Historical site in the Piney Woods of Westville honors Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura, her husband Almanzo and baby Rose Wilder were in the area for about a year in 1891 and 1892. Laura was unable to tolerate Florida’s humidity and family moved back to DeSmet South Dakota.
The reunion takes place at the site of the old family homestead where a state historical marker is located. The family has also created a park, adding a gazebo, parking, benches and more. The plans are to add more features.
Saturday’s celebration included Gospel music, a Laura Ingalls Wilder dress up time, books and articles about the family and Laura, plenty of food and fellowship. The Holmes County Historical Society helped to sponsor the event. The event had attendees from the area including one couple driving from Niceville who were just out for a day in the country and to see the historical sight.
On her website, Craft says Laura along with her husband Almanzo and baby Rose, came to Westville too stay with her second cousin Peter Franklin Ingalls. A short stay was all Laura could take so they packed up the family and headed north to the Dakota Territory where she lived out her life writing the Little House On The Prairie Books. Craft says there was was a sighting of Laura in Westville with wagon and horses. She is said to have carried a large gun and was very vocal.
On her website, Kathy Long lists this excerpt by Laura. "There, with our little daughter Rose, we went to live in the piney woods of Florida where the trees always murmur, where the butterflies are enormous, where plants that eat insects grow in moist places and alligators inhabit the slowly moving waters of the rivers. But at that time and at that place a Yankee woman was more of a curiosity than any of these."
Craft says she remembers watching the “Little House On The Prarie” TV Show, but was more interested in the former “Little Joe” and did not make the connection to herr famous cousin until later.
