News Segment 1

Hwy 90

Part is now real smooth, part is still real rough, but the work is ongoing and it will end. The FDOT District Three office gives us another update on the extensive rework of Highway 90. Beginning next Monday paving crews will apply the final layer of asphalt to side streets and turn lanes along U.S. 90 between Mossy Head and DeFuniak Springs. Additional work will include widening at the State Road (S.R.) 285 intersection. Motorists can expect daytime lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Crews from C.W. Roberts continue sidewalk and driveway replacement along the corridor between County Club Drive and the Holmes County line.

This work is part of the two resurfacing projects which extend 22.5 miles along U.S. 90 from the Okaloosa County line to the Holmes County line in Walton County. Part of this includes the rework of problematic stormwater drains near the courthouse. The DeFuniak Springs City Council has already noted the improvements. Once the work by Gum Creek Farms is complete, the entire roadway will be surfaced for smooth travel.

Improvements along the 16-mile stretch includes resurfacing from the Okaloosa County line to County Club Drive in DeFuniak Springs with new turn lane construction at the S.R. 285 and U.S. 331 North intersections. New guardrail, minor drainage improvements and a new signal at the intersection of U.S. 90 and U.S. 331 North are also included. S.R. 285 will also be resurfaced from south of I-10 to U.S. 90. Weather permitting the project should be complete fall next year.

Work on the 6.5-mile segment runs through DeFuniak Springs from the Holmes County line to Country Club Drive.  Construction consists of milling and resurfacing the existing roadway, drainage, upgrades sidewalk construction, and curb and gutter.

News Segment 2

May Kay Grants to Shelter House

Shelter House, the domestic violence center serving Okaloosa and Walton counties, recently received a grant for $20,000 from The Mary Kay Foundation. In observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, The Mary Kay Foundation awards $20,000 grants to more than 150 domestic violence shelters across the country for a total of $3 million.

Shelter House will use grant funds to maintain critical services for domestic violence victims and their children, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, outreach services, support groups, child counseling and economic empowerment courses.

Shelter House Executive Director Michelle Sperzel says the grant comes at a time when funding for domestic violence services is being slashed across the country. She says Shelter House touches more than 5,000 lives each year in our community, and these funds will help them to continue offering vital services to domestic violence victims and their children. Mary Kay has always been at the forefront of empowering women, and are grateful for the support they receive from the Foundation and local Mary Kay representatives.

Anne Crews, Mary Kay Inc. Vice President of Government Relations and board member for The Mary Kay Foundation says the Foundation is committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence.  She says that through grants, they honor and support shelters across the country that are having a profound impact for women and children in their communities. Since 2000, they have granted $31 million to help domestic violence shelters meet their critical needs and support their ongoing community efforts.

WCSO Searches

Deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) spent a portion of the morning and afternoon hours in the Mossy Head and Oakwood Hills area of Walton County searching for an individual who led them on a foot chase. Dustin Briehn, 24, of Mossy Head, currently has two active warrants for felony violation of probation. Briehn has brown hair and blue eyes, is 6’1 and 197 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a pair of camouflage pants and no shirt.

Both K-9 units with the WCSO and WCI were called out to assist. The aviation unit also flew over the area in an attempt to locate Briehn. The manhunt was called off but law enforcement will be vigilantly watching the area for him. Residents are asked to call authorities if they see Briehn in their neighborhood.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Briehn, please contact the Walton County Sheriff’s Office at 850-892-8186.
