Walton Shooting

A domestic violence call turned into a shooting in the Valley View area of Walton County. Just after 6 am Thursday morning, Walton County deputies responded to a possible domestic violence call on Mack Edwards Road, south of Ponce De Leon.  According to the caller, her nephew’s girlfriend contacted her and told her she needed help because her boyfriend had sustained a gunshot injury.

Upon arrival, deputies and EMS attended to both subjects. The male subject suffered from a gunshot wound to the face in the jaw area and the female had facial injuries.  Both were transported by EMS to a local hospital where they are being currently being treated.

Investigators have been called out to assist in the investigation.  It is still very early in the investigation and as more details become available, they will be released. The crime scene was outside the ranch style home near some campers and a barn. The sheriff’s office Crime Scene was preparing an evidence box labeled for a long gun such as a shotgun or rifle.

OCSO Arrests Two After Video Tells

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office was able to foil a burglary in progress and make two arrests thanks to a video surveillance system being monitored through a home computer.

The owner of Sunshine Pontoon Rental at 500 Harbor Boulevard in Destin says he got a call from the owner of the adjacent business, Just Chute Me, which shares the same
address. He was told the man’s son was watching their video surveillance system on his home computer when he saw two individuals wearing masks run up the stairs and enter Sunshine Pontoon Rentals through a back window.

Deputies who responded found the door had been pried open. They also found two men hiding in a nearby storage shed. A cash bag containing thirty dollars,  metal pry bar,  gray cloth mask, and a pair of work gloves were recovered from under an ice machine near the suspects.

Deputies have charged 21-year old Anthony Salamone of 311 Holly Street in Destin with burglary, possession of burglary tools, violation of probation and petty theft.  Salamone, an employee of the business, said he forced his way in and took the money because he has bills to pay. 22-year old Kevin Riley of Vintage Circle in Destin faces similar charges.

Local Queen Goes to State

Gretchen Kent is the Junior Miss Heart of the USA for our area and the young pageant queen will represent us at the state level. Like many of the other area queens, she is involved in community service, not just because it is good to do or even a requirement, but it is what Heart of the USA is about. As a matter of fact, the girls are required to bring food for food banks as they compete.

We talked to Gretchen about her title and how she became involved in the Heart of the USA pageant system. She says she has done a lot of community service and one of the most enjoyable times was working with the Matrix. She is excited to go to the state level and she is not really nervous. She looks forward to a night of fun as the girls have an old fashioned sleepover.

Gretchen says the area queens will hold a Love Your Pets Day at the DeFuniak Springs Lawson Amphitheater from  2 pm-5 pm this saturday. You can bring your cat and/or dog out to a day specially designed with your pet in mind. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Walton County Animal Shelter. Activities will include: Low-Cost Rabies Clinic, Free Pet ID Tags, Free Pet Photo (to help identify your lost pet), and Low Cost Pet Adoption.

The main event of the afternoon is the Pet Show. Bring your beautiful and talented pets and show everyone how amazing they are. Dogs and cats will be judged in several categories. Registration is $15 and $10 each additional pet. All animals must be on a leash. For more information, visit www.loveyourpetday.webs.com.

Motorcycle Accident

Sunday evening the 9th, on 3280 near Smokehouse Lake Road, a 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail was traveling east on County Road-3280. The FHP says 52-year-old Michael Miller, of Vernon, failed to negotiate the curve causing the bike to veer right onto the CR-3280 eastbound lane unpaved shoulder. The Harley traveled east on the unpaved shoulder for approximately 100 feet before striking a culvert. The bike overturned and rotated several times causing Miller to be thrown from it's seat. Miller ended up in a drainage ditch containing water, just south of the CR-3280 eastbound lane.

He was taken to the trauma center in pensacola via air ambulance. The FHP now reports Michael Merle Miller expired due to the injuries he received in the crash.

Another Walton Fatality

Here is another report we are following up on where a driver was in an accident and died later from injuries. Last Friday afternoon on Ammons Road in the Mossy Head area of Walton County, 64-year-old James Lamar Ammons had just left his residence and was westbound on a private (dirt) drive, just east of Ammons Road. He lost control of the vehicle and struck a pine tree on the south side of the private drive. The vehicle then crossed back over the private drive and came to final rest in the bushes on the north side.

Ammons was transported via helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. He passed away from complications from his injuries on Tuesday. The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide team is investigating the crash. Seat belt usage is unknown. Alcohol is not a factor.
