Scammer Tries To get SO
Even the law is not immune to scam attempts. Scam artists have gotten so brazen they’re even trying to use law enforcement resources to try to con elderly residents out of cash.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office received a call over the weekend from someone claiming to be a Jamaican Doctor asking for help making an emergency contact with some residents at Bob Hope Village in Shalimar. The doctor claimed that a family member of the couple had been in an accident and was in a coma. He asked that deputies have the Bob Hope Village residents call him back. However an Okaloosa deputy familiar with the local couple, who says they’ve been the victim of several scam attempts in the past, asked that verification of the call’s legitimacy be made prior to contacting the family members.
A man called back the Sheriff’s Office a short time later, saying he was a “Jamaican Sheriff”. However when asked to send the OCSO a standard law enforcement teletype with the pertinent information, he refused and appeared to not know what a teletype was.
Similar scams in the past have targeted individuals using “emergency” type scenarios such as a grandson is jailed and needs bond money - or a family member has had their wallet stolen while out of the country and needs cash.
This is the first time the OCSO has been contacted by scam artists attempting to use law enforcement resources.
If you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam attempt, please call the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Fraud Hotline at 850-651-7674 or your local law enforcement agency.
