Hi All,

As many of you have already discovered the server hosting the main wx
websites is unreachable. I received this from the support staff
yesterday:

"""
As many of you are aware, we were hacked today around 7pm GMT and
portion of our service has been cut off (mostly US and portion of UK
servers). At this point, due to a security bug recently discovered in
HyperVM panel, we've brought down most of our VPS nodes and are
investigating situation. At this time we do not have an ETA on this,
but we want to stress out that we have the whole team, onsite DC staff
on each location + some extra help connected and working on the
situation.
"""

My VPS was still online at the time and seemed to be working fine.
However in another report they stated that the VPSs that were still up
would fail if they were rebooted due to the damage that was done to
the host, and that they would still need to do some work on those
nodes.

Status reports of the repairs are being posted at these addresses:
http://66.71.245.2/~vaservc/index1.html

We've temporarily moved the main wxWidgets website to a different
server, but SVN, Trac, and apt.wxwidgets.org will remain offline for
now.

Repair status is at http://vaserv.com/, we are in the Texas data
center. Since my VPS was still up and running a few hours after the
hack event I'm confident that the data is intact and will be
restored. The hosting staff have said that they took everything down
as a precautionary measure and are now looking at each node
individually.

Could you please add a notice to the web site about this outage?

TIA,

I've added notice to the SVN page and the main developers page. Let me
know if it's needed elsewhere.

I thought to add it to the (global) header template so that it is
immediately visible to all the visitors but maybe this isn't actually
necessary -- I guess it all depends on how soon does it come back up. So
far I received only a couple of emails so there is no real urgency.

Time for another update:

The VPS is back up and running, and all files and data seems to be
intact, fulfilling my hope/wish/guess written above. That will make
it much easier to get back up and running as I won't have to worry
about how much might be missing from my backups.

Unfortunately the VPS is currently only provisioned with a small
standard amount of RAM and diskspace until the provider makes another
pass and resets everybody's specs where they are supposed to be.
Since that means that the disk space currently allotted to my VPS is
less than what I am already using then I'm not able to start any
services that require writing to disk. :-( Hopefully it won't take
them too long to get through the queue of support tickets and get this
taken care of.

FYI, here is some related info in the press:

Is there an alternate place for accessing the wxPython 2.8.10 docs? I
realize that there are docs at sourceforge, but those are the wxWidget
docs, and I think that what I'm looking for happens to be specific to
wxpython.

thanks

I now have things up and running, well up and limping at least. They
are still working on getting all the servers back to their former
state, but I managed to get somebody to give me a bit of help on the
side and got the disk space reset. However the RAM allocation is
still half what we need it to be so I tightened up the limits on
Apache and other services. That means that all the stuff is running
but it will probably be slower than normal unless you happen to access
the site at a time when nobody else is.

I also haven't gotten my extra IP addresses reactivated yet, so the IP
address for svn.wxwidgets.org has changed. That should have
propagated by now, but if the name still resolves to 85.234.150.3 for
you then be aware that you won't be able to connect yet.

Oh yeah, the time on the server is also waiting to be reset to the
actual time, so timestamps on commits and mails from SVN and Trac will
be about half a day behind until that is fixed.

Look for the wxPython "newdocs" tarball for a downloadable copy.

A big "Thank You!" to Robin for "riding shotgun" on this.
