I haven't had any luck getting the archive to work; there seem to be continuing disagreements between wview and the Vantage Pro console about something, probably date and time, which prevent wview from reading data from the console.  This morning I:
  1. Stopped the wview server
  2. Powered down the Vantage Pro Console by unplugging it and and removing its batteries
  3. Powered up the Vantage Pro Colsole
  4. Ran vpconfig.  (I did not clear or remove the files in /usr/local/var/wview/archive .)
  5. Waited 5 minutes
  6. Started the wview server
There is still nothing in /usr/local/var/wview/img/Archive, and I'm still getting messages like:
May 16 12:15:30 weather wviewd[12922]: <1337195730667> : vproRunState: retrying archive record from console:
May 16 12:15:30 weather wviewd[12922]: <1337195730667> : vproRunState: you may need to cycle power on the console (including batteries) to resolve this condition.
Does anyone have a clue what's going on, or how to get wview working?

Unless someone has a better plan, I intend to:
  1. Uninstall wview from the server, including deleting everything under /usr/local.
  2. Reset the Vantage Pro Console by unplugging it and removing the battery for 10 minutes or so.
  3. Restart and reinitialize the Vantage Pro Console, in particular making sure that the time and time zone are the same as in the wview server.
  4. Reinstall wview on the server; correct the permissions in /usr/local/var/wview/img.  (What about permissions in the other subdirectories of /usr/local/var/wview, particularly /usr/local/var/wview/archive ?)
  5. Run vpconfig
  6. Start wview and hope for the best.
This seems a little drastic, but all suggestions, so far have not got anything into .../img/Archive or stopped the error messages.  Wview is a too large program for me to comprehend on short notice, and I don't see any easy way to trace the traffic on /dev/ttyUSB0; in particular I don't see any easy way to use wireshark for this.

Please excuse the length of this message.

Thanks - jon

I had similar issues and ended up downloading a trial copy of
Weatherlink (MacOS X), which allowed me to communicate with the
console and reset/delete archive records. It wasn't perfect, but it
got me over the "retrying archive record" error messages.

Is it possible to clear the colsole archieve using wview or associated
software?

NB: In an earlier message I wrote that there are probably bad records in
the console, since the clock on the server was set to various bad times,
mostly in 2002.

Thanks - jon

So far I don't think I seen you restart your wview box - as in reboot it

As a disclaimer, I've never tried this. However, it is a serial
communications device, and one should be able to access it via a basic
terminal program (such as minicom).

This document from Davis would be of some use if you are feeling
adventurous that way. Clearing commands are explained:

Yes, you can clear the console archive with root:$ vpconfig /dev/ttyUSB0 cleararchive (assuming USB0 is your device label)

You can also use 'vpconfig /dev/ttyUSB0 show' to see it's existing settings.

You must stop wview to do this, or you will have problems.
