I have a Davis VantagePro 2 and a small Trim Slice [1] (running
Ubuntu) that I'll be using to pull the weather data off over USB. I
followed the instructions for apt-get install, and ended up with a
full running Apache2 web server on the device. I don't need or want
this. I want to:

1. Get the weather data into a SQLite DB on the Trim Slice, and
2. Frequently push the current data to Weather Underground, and
3. Infrequently generate some custom SVG and HTML from the DB and
rsync (or other) it to my web server.

I tried to uninstall apache2, but this ended up uninstalling wview as
well.

How do I get the most minimal install of wview up and running on
Ubuntu to accomplish just 1 and 2 above?

Download the source tarball and build from source. The APT package is for the "easy" install.

I never understand the heartburn with a local http server accepting only local connections (the default apache setup).

Thanks for the advice, I have now begun working through the steps to
get all the dependencies installed and built for view.

FWIW the 'heartburn' is not the configuration of Apache, but the fact
that this is a small embedded device with limited drive space and RAM.
I need as few applications installed and resident as possible, even if
they take almost no CPU.

Fair enough. Don't forget the UM section on source builds if you get stuck.
