Debugging Fine Offset USB problem on Debian

I installed wview on Debian 6 and it runs fine with the simulator and
happily uploads to my ftp server, but when I change the device to Fine
Offset I get stationInit failed. My FineOffset (a Maplin version)
seemed to have trouble with its USB connection to a Windows box I had
it plugged into a few months ago. Can anyone suggest a debugging
strategy for figuring out if my machine is having a problem connecting
to the console over USB?
