I cloned from there to compare it with an Exception I'm getting, and
it didn't correspond (it wasn't version 1.4.3 - looked quite a bit
older, in fact).
How would one get the code tagged 1.4.3? I tried from github, but it
failed... perhaps my GIT knowledge isn't good enough? :-)

The code base has moved to github (the google code is used mainly for wiki, issue tracking & downloads). You can easily get the version you need from github by accessing this page:
https://github.com/alexo/wro4j/tags and downloading the zip archive of the version you need. Or checkout the source using: git clone g...@github.com:alexo/wro4j.git
If you are not familiar with git, there is a plenty of good documentation online. Also there is a wiki page about how wro4j works with git: http://code.google.com/p/wro4j/wiki/WorkingWithGit

If I want to use the latest codebase that isn't an official release (a
nightly build of some sort), do you maintain a maven repository for
that purpose, or will I have to download the code, compile it, and put
it in my own local repo?

Hi Tim,
There is no nightly build repository yet. I'm planning to create one in the future.
Btw, there are no changes since last release which was performed yesterday.
