Just talked to support ... the usenet plug is indeed going to be pulled in
early November, he was surprised that the announcement was somewhat hidden.
MTS will loose many customers because of this foolishness.

Yes Hotmail, obviously they're hurting during the recession, but you'd think
they'd want to keep customers and not force them to Shaw..

I've been using this since I lost patience with the slowness of whoever
MTS had newsgroups contracted out to.
Not bad, for free.

eternal-september, google it
Then you are in for some hurt.

Microsoft doesn't have a decent news server. Guess the MTS exec people got
their lobster.
I am evaluating my options. Just finished trying Windows Live, what a POC.
Huge step backwards and a PITA to get used to.
Bet Gmail acounts are on the rise.
Just added news.eternal-september.org. Not quite as many newsgroups, but it
works! Thanks for your suggestion.
Over the next few days everybody on MTS should send MTS e-mail asking how
much our monthly rate is going to be discounted based on the reduced package
we will be receiving. I mean everybody on MTS, absolutely flood them with
polite enquiries, starting Friday evening.
If only a few of us do it, not much is likely to happen, if most of us do
it, it will get their attention.
COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS:
It has just come to our attention that MTS will be dropping it's newsnet
access in November.
Effective November 13, 2009, MTS will no longer be providing access to the
Newsgroup (Usenet) service. Notice posted at www.mts.ca/newsgroups
We use this feature daily. How will we be compensated? Will we receive a
credit on our MTS bill to allow us to purchase this service from another
online newsgroup server provider?
Please respond to our request.
Response Required?:Yes
Further info regarding newsgroups being offered. I emailed
eternal-september.org last night asking if they would consider adding a
newsgroup to their pick list at some future date. I was surprised to find
that they added it overnight! This kind of quick response leaves MTS and
their silent partner in crime highwinds-media.com behind in the dust.
Might be a good idea, but will probably will fall on deaf ears.
Anyone know of another provider that doesn't limit GB downloaded per month?
Bill
I recently switched to Eternal September which is a *free* news server.
Access is limited to text-only newsgroups, such as this one.
The URL in question is http://www.eternal-september.org.
Good luck!
Martin
I didn't even realize the news server was getting shut down until
today when | tried to access it. I phoned technical support and they
confirmed that the newsserver has been shutdown - the support person
wasn't sure if it was even shutdown so he had to go ask his manager
and put me on hold for a while.
I sent an inquiry to MTS today asking how much they are going to
decrease my bill by since they are no longer giving me the services I
was paying for. Urrrrgggg so frustrating.
They must have just shut it down today. Their access was still working
yesterday morning. I left the news.mts.net folder in my OE just to see how
much longer it would be kept up and running.

The notice that the newsgroup server was going to be shutdown was hidden on
the MTS site. I don't think many knew this was happening.

So this is the response I go from MTS:
Good Morning
Thank you for your e-mail. MTS did provide Internet customers with
free access to a newsgroup service called Usenet. As of Nov, 13,
2009, that service was no longer offered. The demand for newsgroups
has decreased significantly over the last few years as customers have
found more exciting ways to share information on the web. Therefore
the majority of telephone companies have discontinued this service.
As this was a free service, there will be no reduction in your
monthly Internet rate.
For further assistance please call 225 5687 or 1 877 638 4255. Our
call center is open for billing inquiries weekdays from 8AM to 6PM,
and service inquiries 8AM to 10PM seven days a week.
Sincerely,
Bev
MTS Internet Services
Good Morning
And just now when I wanted on MY internet they are
demanding that I log on............
That in itself is not the problem................
The problem that I now have is that NOBLE MTS
does not accept any of my log on codes that I have
used since Alexander Graham Bell invented
the internet!
That'd be Tim Berners Lee.
Or Sir Tim to you.
An Englishman, nae some ragin' Scottish hillbilly mon.
Free? LOL. The only way to get it was to be an MTS Internet Customer.

Yup, last night around 10 pm for me.
I tried it out on the 17th and found it very slow.
I'm using news.eternal-september.org which Dave S suggested.
Its much less troublesome than what MTS was offering. Used to have
occasional problems posting with MTS and needed to back out of OE or even
reset my router/modem to finally clear things up -- nothing happening like
that anymore. It suits my needs just fine!
