Has anyone noticed all the billboards promoting Remembrance Day observation
along with a prominent picture of a PC MP? There are several in my
neighborhood with a picture of Steven Fletcher shown in the foreground.

There were several advertisements in the Metro One insert from Thursday
November 5th; but the biggest and most colorful one boasted a blue
background and pictures of all four PC MP's -- Shelly Glover, Rod Bruinooge,
Steven Fletcher and Joy Smith. Mind you there were other less eye-catching
ads; but the next one down in size and color were two local Conservative
MLA's -- Myrna Driedger and Heather Stefanson. There was one other smaller
less ostentatious black and white ad featuring three local NDP MLA'S --
Sharon Blady, Bonnie Korzeniowski and Jim Rondeau.

I find it disgusting that any political figures would use such a solemn
occasion to promote their party stripes. Especially the PC MP's, who are
most obviously using the opportunity to use public funding to advertise and
promote visibility for their political party just in case of a snap federal
election call. Is this what our soldiers fought and died for?

Shame on them!

I haven't been following the Olympic news very much, but I Googled the logo
at http://www.piurl.com/p/1xPx and I don't see anything to get overly
excited about. The red and white is an extension of our national flag. The
red and white colors represent our English and French heritage, and the
images within the maple leaf represent our First Nation's people.

Personally I don't have much left over for the Olympic organization. They
come across like an old boy's club bordering on dictatorship. The games
were supposed to promote internationalism, but ever since 1936, they seem to
have been used as an expensive alternative for parades of troops, tanks and
missiles that are still seen in violent third world countries too poor to
host an Olympic game themselves. It would be interesting if the Olympics
were held in an extremely impoverished and benign country with the costs
shared by all the other participating countries. We know that will NEVER
happen. I know this is a very narrow minded view, but its always been a
nagging thought in the back of my mind.

Sure! We could have the olympics hosted in Afghanistan - think of it:

- Suicide bomber 100m dash
- Improvised Explosive Device rally run
- Infidel Beheadings (the fastest)
- Growing and cultivating poppies

and I think you are to young to remember 1936 and even more narrow minded
to know what it was all about.

What I was trying to point out was that since the 1936 Olympics, there have
been too many countries hosting the games purely for propaganda purposes and
the IOC was only too willing to sell out to these interests so long as the
transaction was lucrative enough. It wasn't long ago that these same
countries would trot out their war machines on parade to show their might to
the world. Now they just use a more subtle approach.

If the Olympic games truly had an international spirit, poorer countries
lacking the financial means and without an ulterior agenda would get equal
representation. As it stands now, its usually a combination of whoever has
the deepest pockets to run a slick marathon campaign and the resourcefulness
to grease the right wheels that gets to carry the torch.

I was honestly surprised when the announcement came that Rio de Janeiro
would host the 2016 games. Time will only tell if this is a long term
change in direction for the Olympic games, or just a blip on the radar.

You didn't answer me about the conservative logo and the canadian
olympic teams new logo and how much they look alike......I just find it
humourous how outraged you were about the rememberance day billboards
and not a peep about the logo. Whether you believe in the olympics or
not Canada is still your country and you should be aware of how it is
representing itself.

I am sure you were all for boycotting China which to me does nothing
except hurt the athletes....those are the ones that are important not
the governments

And to top it all off, the Olympics have always been for the top
countries of the world, long before 1936, right from its origin. Why do
you think the Greeks won most of them.....:)

I finally found a link and a picture of the logo you were writing about.

http://www.piurl.com/p/1xZO

Sure they are similar, but I don't see anything to be outraged about.

The National Post article points out that Gary Lunn admitted there are
similarities, so you'd figure his party would be suing for trademark
infringement. Since the logo is being used by an organization that can
actually benefit his party by association, I doubt if anything will ever
come of it. Mind you it would be amusing if a gay organization adopted a
similar logo -- how long do you think it would have taken for the s*** to
hit the fan? Oops, there I go again regurgitating someone else's ramblings!

BTW, all those PC Remembrance Day bill board ads around my neck of the woods
are gone already.

Remember a few years ago when there was that shit-storm about who could and
couldn't sell poppies and where they allowed or not?

Apparently it's still a problem in Ontario
