Are the ones at Home Depot pretty much the same as from the Safe & Lock
stores?

I picked up a Sentry at costco, good sized and paid something around $180
It's rated for 1 1/2 hrs., and you could put 12 drives in it.
I have always wondered something about that 1 1/2, is that 1 1/2 hrs before
it melts or 1 1/2 hrs before the heat itself destroys whatever inside.
Remember it doesn't take much heat to destroy a drive, just loose your fan
for a day and see what happens to your drives.

Supposidly they are rated for 1700F for 60 min. and not the 90 min. I stated
earlier. The safe will keep papers from igniting and only browning of the
document. If they can't get the fire out in that time your house is a complete
loss anyway. Safest place is a safe deposit box or somewhere else off site.
Looks like they've really gone up in price, we bought it for $180 on sale (was
$249), and now it's $450+

Plastic of discs will melt long before the papers turn brown.
So you take a normal safe and cut it's fire time in half, and figure
anything after that, your prized Share Views VHS collection is goo.
I've seen them with friggen USB ports and internal HDD, I think that is
rather silly..means you need to carry your laptop, or otherwise do the
media transfer under the basement stairs where the safe is bolted to the
floor. No thanks.
I'll look for one with a better water rating than fire... I can see my
basement floor flooding sooner than the house burning down. Or I get
one of those diver's bags, put all my shit into there, then roll it up
.. I mean.. ahem.. and place it in the safe. Tupperware works just
as well. Looking for tuppwerware containers I can place a 3.5" or 2.5"
HDD's into.
I wonder if Nygard had a good media safe ?
