The short story is I as a journeyman painter want to do my part for
humanity and train some young people as apprentices. To do this, and
access a wage subsidy, I must take a business course. Part of this
course is writing a business plan, and part of the business plan is
this survey. As I don't feel like standing under Portage and Main with
a clipboard; I'm trying this. I need men, women, young and old.
I'd prefer if you'd e-mail me back, but if you want to answer here; so
be it.

TIA Don

Question

1) Have you used a painting contractor in the past?

2) Who did you use?

3) What was the one thing they could have done better?

4) If you wanted to hire a painting contractor where would you look
for one.

5). Do you intend to use a painting contractor in the near future?

6) How much per hour do you think a painting contractor charges?

7) What would be the driving factor in your decision to hire a
painting contractor ( eg: price, experience, reputation, whatever)

8) What gender are you?

9) What age are you?

10) Annual income:

Under 10K
Between 10k and 25K
between 25k and 50k
Between 50K and 100K
Over 100K

end of survey

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I should add that if anyone doesn't want to answer one of the
demographic questions,,,,,,gender, age, income.....that's ok

thanks

re: survey

Yes, there is definately a need to train younger/older tradespeople in
this town.

Personally, I'd like to see a little change in the survey questions
perhaps...and shop it around the non-cyber world a little (do the
walks in River Heights/Tux/Wolseley) where much of the rennos are
being done. Knock on a few doors the next day after dropping off the
survey to ask about it.

The words "painting contractor" might confuse some folks. There are
"general contractors" and there are the subtrades like "painters".
Many people get drywalling and repairs done as well as painting, so
the questions might throw off some of the responses. I'd just say,
"painter". It also helps to have "Multiple choices" to give the
respondant some hints at what the possible answers are.

I'd like to see additional questions like
- "what part of town do you live"...
- what style of house (single story/older model),
- when was it last painted inside/outside...(or how many times have
you had the outside painted?)
- how much have you spent in the past 5years to renno/paint your
house.
- have you ever painted your house inside by yourself?",
- how much does a gallon of quality house paint cost"?
- do you know what a journeyman painter is? and why it matters?
- why are you considering painting (about to sell the house, like a
new color every few years, ceiling stains)

A few more comments below.

**
yes. (I'd be thrown off by the word contractor though. Many times
you get the same guy to do the drywalling/repairs and the painting.
Naturally, outside painters just paint although they may also be asked
to fix up the soffits etc

someone from the phone book in some occaisions. Other times friend
recommend.

shown me a bit more of a wall in that color before doing the whole
thing so I could have changed shades.

friends, sign on a truck on the street, in the phone book, ad in paper

yes.

**
some charge per hour, some charge per job

depends if he/she is on a ladder outside where I would pay alot more.

The prices are all over the map. Some guys in the paper charge $99 or
$200 a room, or $20 an hour. Some big companies might be double or
triple. But usually, people get other things done at the same time.
Drywall a wall, or patch and so the prices would change

quality of the work, reputation, and a clean truck.

A stranger would be hired in many cases if he/she had a clean truck
and clean clothes. You hate to see a painter with a messy truck and
paint all over his clothes.

I'd love to see the painter do a little before committing to the whole
job.

You might want to ask how they reach a decision in paintnig the
house...alone, with spouse...
*

* you ask a range of ages. under 30, 30-50, over 50 etc

**its good you asked a range but income is one of the last questions
to ever ask anyone. Its almost best to substitie that question with
"how much have you spent on your house rennos in the past...how much
do you anticipate spending". and maybe get the income side covered by
asking "what part of town they live in..that will answer alot but sure
there are any exceptions.

Young folks now can take some trades/painting courses at the usual
locations like RRC, Tec Voc, RB Russel and could get hands on with the
Habitat for Humanity program, perhaps the Lehotsky program which may
still be functioning.
