Has anybody ever tried to succesfully clone the complete disk "C" , OS
(XPSP3) included,
with Acronis Image Home 2009 ? Does it work?
Thanks.

There are a number of cloning programs out there. I'd like to hear of
one which will work on different sized hard drives. Where I volunteer
we've tried a number of programs. There seems to be a number of other
issues to deal with... The MBR of the hard drive, the registry for
Windows, XP on a different computer (most of our installs are 2K - yes
we have licenses for all the machines including the XPs), and not being
to restore on a different sized hard drive.

Listening to the various *NIX folks it is easier to do it with and
using Linux. Connect to a LAN and use (I think) scp to copy everything
on to another computer.

Have I ever tried to successfully clone the system disk in XP? Of
course! Is there any other way to try? I mean why would I try to
UNsuccessfully clone the system disk?

Have I had success in cloning after trying? No way! Acronis True Image
(at least the free version, which is what I believe you're referring to)
is a nasty piece of shite.

What free version????

Acronis True Image does a clone of my C: drive every five days, and a
differential backup every night. And yes, I have done a restore from
that backup successfully.

But then I'm on Windows2000 using TrueImage v.11, which is why I didn't
answer to start with.

I have installed TrueImage Home on a friends computer, where it
faithfully clones his hard drive(XP) every night.

Regarding your question about working on different sized HD's, I've used Ghost for years, always
with much satisfaction. The most recent version I have is Ghost 8 (yeah, yeah, I know it's pretty
old already). I have used it for XP and most earlier versions of Windows (never tried it on ME).
It works for NTFS and FAT file systems. I made a bootable Ghost CD, so I am essentially working in
some form of DOS mode, particularly when backing up a C drive which has the OS on it. However, even
in this DOS mode it still works with the NTFS partitions. It will work from windows, which is fine
if you aren't cloning the partition with the OS, but I'm not sure about when imaging the drive with
the OS.

I usually have my HD's partitioned, and I try to have a partition available that is big enough to
put the image of the C drive on. i.e. I will have a D, E or whatever drive that is at least as big
as the C drive (with enough free space for a compressed version of C). I tell ghost to put the
image on the other partition, and when it's done I boot to windows and burn the image onto DVD's.
Ghost can actually write directly to DVD's while making the image, but I've always felt more
comfortable going to the partition first. The image-creation is also faster when going to an HD
partition. Ghost breaks the image up into 2 GB files to accommodate some of the file-size
restrictions of some OS's.

If I make an image of an HD I have been able to restore to a different sized HD with no problems.

I've also recently used Paragon Drive Backup Pro V9 Win PE to create backup images. A friend gave
me a copy and said it was available free from the manufacturer. He had to register with the
manufacturer, but it was still free. I don't have as much experience with it as with ghost, but
it's claim to fame (for me) is that it will write directly to a USB port. i.e. I can go straight
onto a memory stick or external HD. I have restored from it, but just back onto the original HD.
Not sure about going to a different sized partition. I think it will do it to a different size HD,
just never tried it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll mention it to the folks where I volunteer. It
will probably help a lot (we give out OLD computers for
charity/education). Ideally we want something which is free in this
situation. Although a not for profit organisation they aren't a
registered charity.

OK, that explains the 'free'.

For a long time I used version 7, then I jumped to 11.
Both did the job (image backup).
It's probably overkill for someone who just wants data file backup.

What's the 'nasty' part?

check out the dd command through *nix distros. linuxquestions is a good
place to start on the net and has one hell of a dd summary. check it
out. No need to install just dl a live cd burn or install on usb a way
you go.
